Not sure this is the correct forum for this but here goes.....
Years ago I had a regular headset that plugged into the mic and speaker jack of my sound card. If my headset was bothering me i could just unplug the sound cord take headset off and still hear the game thru my regular desk speakers.
I now have a Logitech USB Headset. It is plugged into one of my front USB ports. The sound settings are set to headset. Using the same scenario if I unplug my headset go to options change from headset to speakers I get no sound at all. Because the game thinks my headset is still plugged in. This happens no matter what I try, the only way to get sound back is to restart the game not just camp to select actualy exit out and restart. The same happens if i am listening to the desk speakers and try and use the headset only get sound from speakers. The game doesnt know i plugged in my USB headset.
Am I doing something wrong? Is this just an incompatability with eq2 and usb ? Is this a known issue and hopefully the devs are looking into a solution ?
You can leave the sound settings to speaker and the headset will still work. I had similar issues with a USB headset, by the way. I opted for returning to a "Y" splitter for sound output, and just turn down the output of whatever I'm not using. As there's a viable fix available, I wouldn't bank on them putting a whole lot of effort into a dev-related fix.
Just my 2 coppers.
i have the same problem, but it can be fixed rather easly.
wheny ou unplug your headset go into the in game voice setting and change the drop down menue from your head set back to your speackers
after struggling with a usb headset for a while, I decided it wasn't worth the hassle.
sound card ftw

I have changed it back to speakers nothing happens.
I go between a USB Headset and Speakers all the time with EQ2 and here is what I do:
Before you launch EQ2 go into the "Sounds and Audio Devices" control panel (either from the Control Panel or from the sound icon in the notification area of the taskbar if you display it there).
Select "Audio" and change the "Sound playback" "Default Device:" to the speakers or the USB headset.
This works in XP and is same except for labeling differences in Vista.
This will not work if you want to do this while in the game however.

yes but i want to switch from usb to speakers or speakers to USb while in the game. If i have to relaunch the game doesnt help any
I think you're out of luck with that. I had similar issues with Battlefield 2, btw, so it's not an EQ2-only thing.

Sorry I wasn't able to help. I believe this is an OS problem not an EQ2 problem. I've had web browsers not switch sound devices while they were active and had to relaunch to fix.
I have same issue with my headset and now i cant even get sound to come through my speakers with my headset unplugged. I have camped to desktop, i have rebooted my computer , i have fiddled with my sound settings and i still cannot get sound to come out of my speakers. I have no sound issues with any websites i go to , i have no sound issues with WoW, basically the only sound issues im having is with EQ2 so i dont think its an OS thing i think its and EQ2 bug.
Also to boot i think its dumb that you cant have game sounds come through your speakers and have voice chat come in through headphones when you are using voice chat feature (am able to do this in WoW yes i know this isnt wow and im not saying one is better than the other but this is a pretty simple feature that should be there for EQ2)

I have no problems getting game sounds coming through the speakers and voice chat coming through the headset.
Under Sound and device properties I set Sound Playback to the sound card , Sound recording to the USB headset.
Under the Voice tab I use the USB headset for both in and out.
The in game under voice options make sure the USB headset is used for in and out.

I've tried every possible combination of setting to get sound to come out of speakers and to get voice chat only through headphones and i cant get it to work. Not only that i have had several issues with not getting any game sounds at all either through headphones or through speakers with chat enabled and disabled. Its a shame really it shouldnt be this difficult.
Now let me preface this by saying that i am not a technically savy person in terms of computer coding and opererating systmes. However i have been playing MMO's for a long time now and i have used several third party voice chat systems like Ventrillo, Team Speak, and even roger wilco back in the day lol. So my point is im not new to setting up microphones and sound settings to get voice chat and sound working properly. Im usually the one telling my friends what to do to get things working right.
HOWEVER im am thoroughly BAFFLED. I have gone into control panel and checked all my speaker, mike(acutally cant find any microphone options/setting), and sound settings. I have gone into the eq2 options menus and checked all the settings. I have checked and rechecked , i have tried every possible variation. I have rebooted, total shutdown and restart, tried with no headphones at all only speakers. I have NO IDEA what the problem is. I have played WoW today, i have looked at videos on youtube and fandango, have played music on Itunes!!!!!!! Everything related to sound is working perfectly fine except sound in relation to EQ2.
I dont know if its just Vista screwing everything up or what but im about at my wits end trying to figure this out. Only thing i would say is i have sp2 installed and i noticed it changed some of my menus and options ..example
"Under the Voice tab I use the USB headset for both in and out."
I find no such options in my sound panel and cant even find any microphone settings in control panel.
If that is in reference to the in game options yes i've set it up that way, if that line refers to sound setting on your pc then i seem to no longer have any microphone options to set anymore .
Since the in game voice chat goes through the game client, it would be hard to switch between the options without a client restart. A Y-splitter is an option, though I don't like using a splitter when I can avoid it. The problem doesn't occur with 3rd party voice clients like Ventrilo since it is a seperate program that can us it's own sound settings.
I typically restart when switching between headset/speakers, but I use skype/ventrilo/teamspeak for my voice chat needs so I don't run into many issues.
OP: I can't say I have your exact scenario, because I never try to play game sounds through my headset. I have a Logitech USB headset and a sound card and I play game sounds through the sound card and usually voice through the headset. However, I can switch voice between the headset and the sound card for voice in the client all the time. Sometimes I take off my headset and listen to people over the speakers instead.
I think the problem might be unplugging the USB headset. There really is no need to do this. You should be able to use EQ2 to control this for both game sounds and and voice. If you use Windows to switch sound devices, then yes, you are going to have to restart EQ2.
Unfortunately, I think you will have to switch them both separetely in EQ2, but that's much easier than restarting. When you want to switch from headset to speakers, leave your headset plugged in, go to options, then sound first and choose your speakers as a device, then go to voice and choose speakers. To use your USB headset again, reverse that.
