Your grasp of TCP and UDP are not correct. Its more along the lines of TCP being the equivalent of a public bus (not quite as fast but great for moving large amounts of people/data in an orderly fashion, UDP is more like moving all those people on vespa scooters, where they all zip along but each scooter doesn't carry much and they won't arrive in an orderly fashion)

UDP (User Datagram Protocol) is a communications protocol that offers a limited amount of service when messages are exchanged between computers in a network that uses the Internet Protocol (IP). UDP is an alternative to the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and, together with IP, is sometimes referred to as UDP/IP. Like the Transmission Control Protocol, UDP uses the Internet Protocol to actually get a data unit (called a datagram) from one computer to another. Unlike TCP, however, UDP does not provide the service of dividing a message into packets (datagrams) and reassembling it at the other end. Specifically, UDP doesn't provide sequencing of the packets that the data arrives in. This means that the application program that uses UDP must be able to make sure that the entire message has arrived and is in the right order. Network applications that want to save processing time because they have very small data units to exchange (and therefore very little message reassembling to do) may prefer UDP to TCP. The Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) uses UDP instead of TCP.

UDP provides two services not provided by the IP layer. It provides port numbers to help distinguish different user requests and, optionally, a checksum capability to verify that the data arrived intact.

In the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) communication model, UDP, like TCP, is in layer 4, the Transport Layer.

For the EXACT port mapping you need see this thread:
Up to date port information for those with super tight firewalls (like me)

I also do not recommend that people turn off the UAC, but rather set Launcher to run as Administrator (right-click > Properties > "Compatibility" tab > tick the "Run as Administrator" box )

Other than those two minor corrections this is a fairly handy general problem solving list. SMILEY

1. Thanks for pointing those out and yes i didn't understand TCP and UDP that much but now i do SMILEY<img src=" />

2. The reason i wanted the UAC to be disabled for my opinion is because i have used vista for over a year and all that pops up are programs unharmful it has never caught anything like background programs or anything. But it is also a good option for tight security, but if you are like me who is relaxed with the loose sercurity. But if you want full protection i would also recommended to have the (UAC) enabled.

Edit: BTW i added your post to the guide since it is very informative and it helps people know what they are doing opening ports using TCP or UDP.

Yes it was Microsoft trying to find new ways of better security for their new OS.
