9mmfu asked me to post in here about an issue I, and a number of other players have been experienceing.

Other players think it's fun to spam heals and other AOE buffs, which causes lag as illustrated in the pic below.

My system more than meets the spec for the game, and I run the gfx at the lowest settings, so can someone tell me why this still happens, and why nothing has been done about it yet?

Also, can I expect to read an announcement asking players to stop spamming heals? I have reported this before and just got the usual flim flam and nothing happened as usual.

Heh, annoys the hell out of me as well so hiding the effects would be good, but since thats not an option....

Could you post your dxdiag info and MSInfo from the thread at the top of the forum please?

Cheers,

Jeffers

Lag is the main problem

I have a 2Mbps ADSL connection, provided by British telecom.

I connect to a netgear wireless router, lag is the same using the router, or bypassing it with either wireless or connected by a patch cable.  I am not using nat or ICS.

I'm using Norton Internet Security as my personal firewall, however I disable it before running any games that require an internet connection.

Looking through it, I can't see any obvious problems with your system, there aren't that many programs running in the background that could cause any problems.

The only obvious thing that I can see is the graphics card, which I know you said in the other post you can't replace (and laptops aren't the easiest of things to do things with in any case).

I'll see if anything comes to me while reading again when I'm a bit more awake unless Phi or a TSR can spot something I haven't.

The gfx card has always been sweet as a nut, the game usually runs smoothly on it, until the aoe effects start happening.

Perhaps in a future patch, we could have the option to disable those effects? perhaps maybe just the upgrade/heal icon appearing over other players heads instead of the whole effect?

The slowdown with the heal effect is because of the sudden massive increase in polygons and large textures being rendered, same as if there were a bunch of spawns. Anywhere from 5 to 15 extra polygons per player, plus all the server comms that happens to coordinate all the heals, plus all the extra sounds that are played. All up it's a strain on your caching and system resources above and beyond the normal load.

Unfortunately the 2 fixes are:

  1. upgrade your hardware, primarily your video card
  2. turn off effects in your graphics options.

From a game strain point of view (I'll have to confirm this when I get home) I thought you could turn off just area effects (or at the very least set them to only render on you).

The problem is your graphics card, especially since it is a mobility card as they have practically no cooling and cannot be clocked to decent speeds imo.

I run the game with a 7600gt 256mb, and get big frame rate drops when this happens too, i go to about 114fps.It's not lag, it is just your gpu producing awful frame rates due to too much happening on screen. It's not internet lag.You also have the minimum amount of ram allowed to run this game decently.2gb is more reccomended, but even that would not help you ad the problem is your gpu.Running this game with very high frame rates requires and x1900 or x1950, or a 7800, 7900, 7950.Really to run it perfectly and steadily all the time, withpout any frame rate drops would require a crossfire and sli setup, or the monstrous 8800gtx.I plan to get the 8800gtx at xmas, so I know I'll be fine.

So to sum it up, it's your gpu, and since you have a laptop there is nothing you can do.But seriously if you are serious about gaming ,especially so with MMo's you need a decent desktop with upgrade potential as these games are constantly needing better spec.SOE states this on the back of all their game boxes:sytem requirements may change and you may need to upgrade your system to play this game.

EDIT: Just noticed your graphics card only has 64mb memory, you are extremely lucky this game runs at all on your system. You must remember this is a next gen MMOG, this game in it's current state simply could not run on a ps3 or xbox360, becuase of the amount of memory it needs to run.It allows you to enter building with no loading at all, and has massive amounts of graphical detail for a MMOG.Also a laptop hdd is not really suited to this game unless it is sata, this game runs alot of stuff from the hdd and the game demands more than ATA speeds alot of the time.Really the game needs sata spped to run without any laggig at all, and even then demands a system with a top of the line High end graphics card, high end athlon fx cpu, high end ram, ddr 2 800, or more (2GB) to run completely lag free.

Edit...AGAIN!! SMILEY : I just noticed you are a pretty experienced player with this game, and you have not had many problems before, so please do not think I am being condescending or being a know it all towards you, I am just saying why the problem is happening because of your GPU and GPU memory.I am pretty astounded the game runs on your system with that GPU.Just shows you that because of your other parts you are getting it to run fairly smoothly.Anyway, I just wanted you to know that I am not being rude or condescending towards you.Relay your problem to SOE and perhaps they will introduce an option to the game for people running the game with underpowered GPU's.This is a seriously intensive effect on any hardware, especially when it is happening all over the screen in places like mara C.

1. Not so easy on a lappy
2. That does nothing, the animations/effects still occur.

I've been running MxO from beta through to now on the same rig, I've never had any major problems with gfx lag.  I only see this when there are one of two things happening

1. There is a heavy crowd in a certain area,
2. People are dropping AOE effects.

I appreciate your suggestions, and advice, and do not think you are being condescending at all.  I don't wear the fact that I work in IT as a badge for all to see!

Excellent first post, and I hope it is the first of many.

Back on topic. I have read other people noting a drop in performance under the same conditions as me, a few from folks with far beefier rigs than mine.

I'm not asking for a quick fix here, as I know (much like the sound loop bug) it will take forever to address.  So devs, for those of us that need it, PLEASE check the effect settings, and let us turn those aoe animations off!

I feel your pain Dripping Cheese(great name btw SMILEY ) and I would hope they would address this problem sooner rather than later.

Thanks for understanding I wasn't being condescending either SMILEY .

As I was saying, I have these problems too at the moment and from extensive research with other players since I got the game, most other people do as well, and the only people that don't have exceptional rigs. It all boils down to the way the game was coded unofrtunately and it was coded with more powerful computers in mind. Alot of poepl are trying to play the game with shadows and stuff on as well, and turning off shadows will increase your performance by over 20%. The graphical effects in this game were written pretty poorly and that is why they are just so *CENSORED* intensive on the gpu and cpu. Like I said , the only way to run this game lag free is to have a great gpu or a mid range card in crossfire or sli setup.

Is there any way you can increase your ram to 2 gigs or increase it to higher than you have? This will help a bit if you are going to keep the same laptop for your gaming needs.game like Battlefield 2142and MXO and Oblivion all show the need for more and more ram and are showing that 1Gb is no longer preferable for the more  modern games. If you do decide to get a desktop or laptop with a better GPU, you will get a good price for your current laptop as it is great in all the other areas.

I have emailed SoE about the effects and hopefully if enough people do then let's hope they address the problem.
