Playing on a different hard drive

The C drive on my laptop is full so I moved some stuff including MxO to another hard drive (still on my laptop). The problem is the launcher keeps closing when it tries to get to the character select screen. I thought that just changing the location properties of the shorcut icon would be enough but it seems something else needs doing, wondering if it needs to be properly installed on the other hard drive.

What you can do is create a new shortcut of your launcher in which where your MxO files are at now and put it on the desktop. Use that to open up your launcher.

I tried it but it still won't work. It's creating crash dump files (open in visual studio and have nothing in them) if that has any significance.

There probably is a solution, but it's best to keep it on the main drive. I quote a faction mate on my boards:-

"As for the external HD research, I would forgo that for an internal one anytime (cheaper and faster).As I have repeatedly noted folks, external HDs are only good for storing pictures,music,movies and backups where speed is a non issue. For running demanding programs that already have long loading times I would stay away from even the best/fastest ext. HD."

If wot i understand you are saying is your NOT using an external but another partition on your internal HDD yes?
if so..the issue you have is because some registry keys/files still more than likely point to the original install folder.
*sigh..the solution unfortunately is to reinstall to the new partition.
i keep my c: drive pretty barren. all my games are installed to a different partition in the beggining and i have no issues.

It should be noted that no registry entries are required to have MxO function. In fact I have 5 installs of the game for my various needs and as it turns out none of them were installed on the computer I primarly test with.

You should be able to simply copy the entire install to a different location, make a new short cut to your Launcher.exe file and run the game. (or change the shortcut you originally used if you feel comfortable doing so.)

I would try doing a full scan of the game's files including the launcher to verify that none of the files were copied badly. This has only happened to me on a couple of circumstances.

All this is predicated on the assumtion you are using XP and not Vista. (which has its own bag of hammers you have to work through)

Right click the launcher.exe file and click properties.

Look for an 'Unblock' button. If you see one, click it. Windows firewall may be actively blocking it.

A friend of mine just copied all of his files over from a XP Desktop to a Vista Laptop and claims the game works fine.

Like 9mmFu said to move the location of MxO all you need to do is move the directory and re-create the shortcut. Make sure you have admin privileges for the location you moved the folder to and that it isn't write protected.
This is for the stand-alone version of MxO. I'm not sure if anything needs to be changed for people who are using the SOE launchpad. I would imagine there is a .ini file that needs to have it's link to MxO changed.

personlll... the game should run fine but your friend will still experience the vista related bugs (tell him to see if he can spot anything odd with the way faces are shaded if he pans the camera around his RSI)

Maybe it is a Vista thing because yes it should just work as long as you change the shortcut, now it cuts out when it tries to patch. I don't know what's going on with my C drive, it randomly acquires GBs for no reason, can't clear space to put MxO back in.

If it's a possible space problem, try a HD defrag if you haven't done one recently. I usually defrag my game drive at least once or twice a week to clear up free space. Another thing you might want to do is get a program like Ccleaner which will clear out registry and cache entries that are no longer being used actively.
