Speeding up the game.

Recently while trying to fix BF2, I found the issue that hindered
gameplay for it quite a bit. Since I fixed it, I've noticed I
have virtually no lag, I go to the loading area or jack in a lot
faster, and I see overall a big jump in performance.

Try this (assuming you have XP): Go to start, control panel. Open
'system' and click on the hardware tab, then click device manager.

Go to where you see IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and click the plus
sign. For most of us with standard(non-SATA) HD's, right click on
'primary IDE Channel' and click properties. Now clickt he
"advanced settings" tab. This lists what is the primary IDE
Channel on your computer, i.e. your harddrive. Right now what we
want to do, is to see if you can get into DMA mode. See what your
current transfer mode is, and then click the transfer mode
pulldown. Hopefully regardless of what it said in the transfer
mode you'll have an option for "DMA if available."

Now, if your current mode said PIO and you had 'DMA if available'
selected, what you need to do, is actually set the transfer mode to PIO
only and click Ok, and then go back, and set it back to DMA if
available. For some reason, Windows doesn't recognize the setting
if you don't physically change it back. Right now my current
transfer mode is Ultra DMA Mode 5, and like I said before, big
change. I'm not sure how many people can take use of this little
boost, but if I help one person I'll be happy.

the default setting for windows 2000 and XP is ultra ATA 100. forcing
it to use your hardware if it is fater will imporove things yes.

I did it and it seems to improve my loading-area times. I can go
through hardlines much faster...or though it seems. My lag wasnt
completely gone, but what i did to improve my lag was restart my
router, and disable and then enable my internet connection through
windows. My lag was considerably reduced after doing those 3 things.

Well, system performance and connection performance are two separate things. I think the OP's post was more towards system than connection. So if doing something to your router helps, then your lag was more connection related it seems.

Yeah I'm not sure what did the trick. But before I had my lag
before the areas never loaded this fast. I played BF2 for acouple
hours tonight and I didnt have any trouble with lag really. Well
i'm glad i did it anyways, but I dont know if it helped.

what about overall lag? I just switched my ISP to direcway and reguardless of where I am, I lag the worst I have ever seen. I am constantly in red latency even with lowest settings. I clocked my download speeds at around 670 kps and my upload speeds around 120kps. What is up with this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I apologize for the double post, but I clocked my internet just now, using my isps speed test at 985kbs download, and 192 upload, can somebody please tell me why I am having this terrible lag problem? I didn't have it with my previous crappy isp that had me on restrictions.

okay, a third apology, Since I cannot edit my posts, Inorder to explain my problem, and hopefully get help, I need to make a triple post, so don't kill me!

I just plugged up my old isp so the phone could be used, and when I ran the matrix, my lag issue was elimated, but this internet I'm running off of right now is almost 1/4 slower than my new isp. I'm unaware of the upload speeds, but the download speeds are nothing much faster than DSL, and its supposed to be broadband. Yet I'm not lagging, *CENSORED* is going on?! Does anybody, and I mean anybody have any suggestions or comments, because this is like, real confusing...

Yes, doing this minor change has made me love this game again. It
takes roughly 3 seconds from the time I click "jack into the matrix"
for it to shoot me out the hardline, one of my biggest gripes with the
game.

And I'm not sure if the game's lag was fixed or something during this
change I made but I don't ping above 80 since, haven't seen a yellow
bar yet. :smileyhappy:

networkcoder, maybe you could call your ISP and ask them what's going
on? It doesnt make much sense like you said..maybe Ron has some
suggestions?

Hello,

Your connection speed means little to nothing in situations like this. There could be some packetloss or ping issues on your ISP network (the faster connection) that isn't existant on the slower connection. You're likely going to want to contact your ISP and explain the situation.

Also, if you haven't done so, you may want to upgrade your routers firmware and temporarily disable your firewall.

n3tw0rkc0d3r you have an issue with latency and not bandwidth. A
tool like traceroute can help you find where the bottleneck is.
Is direcway a satelite broadband company? If it is then you wont
be able to use this with online gaming. The time it takes for a
network packet to go from your computer to a satellite in space then
down to your isp and back takes time and this is known as
latency. Even though you have plenty of bandwidth you will always
have a latency problem with sat broadband.
