As best I can work out the ranking system is based both on number of posts and your overall rating for posts that you make (this last part is affected by other forum posters and wide open to abuse).
The ranks I know of so far are as follows:
Redpill - still not sure what this is given for. Bluepill - seems to be average rating and low to medium post count Coppertop - seems to be good rating and low post count Controller - seems to be high rating, possibly higher post count Awakened - low rating with a higher post count Admin - Red in colour like redpills, but bold. Obviously only admins have this TSR - orange in color and bold. Only for SOE tech support
This is only based on what I've seen and may or may not be accurate.

Yeah I've only seen two redpills, and both were before the forum reset. And as you can see, although I was "Controller" rank earlier, someone decided to go through my posting history and one star pretty much everything. The rating system is far too abusable at this time for it to mean anything.

That's exactly why they dropped it from the SWG forum's. People were
just abusing it, then they added a forum ranking system which
incorporated Time Subscribed to the Game and Posts. I'll post details
on how they did it with swg later, it's very interesting and something
that the board master should look into.

/agreed.. just too much abuse potential..
And everyone has a different opinion about what a 5 star post should be vs a 1 star post.

If this works like the SWG ranking system, it's based on registration
date, total post count, and message ratings people give to you.

Can't be post count as Globin and I have the same count. It must still be too do with rating, although our profiles both show an average of 3 stars... The rating system not only needs to be controlled better, but it needs a proper explanation.
As for people having a different idea as to what a 5 star post is, this could be solved by two means, the first (if possible) would be to restrict everyone to the "basic" rating system. A helpful post would thus be 5 and non-helpful one, 1. Still open to abuse though. The other alternative (again, if possible) is to have messages sent to a moderator, via a reccomendation system. Similar to the basic rating, but instead of applying the ranking right off the bat, the post is flagged for a moderator to read and then decide if it's either non-helpful, or helpful or neither. This cuts down on abuse and solves the problem of differing ideas of what is a 5 star post and what isn't.
As to whether either system can be done, still remains to be seen.
