Well that sucks. D: I'm sorry. SMILEY If it makes you fell any better, my last computer I built online, waited like a month, was really exited cracked open the box. I picked up the cpu. I noticed it was light... really, really light. So I got a screw driver and popped the case open, and there was nothing in, just an empty case.  they forgot to put it together. LOL SMILEY

That wouldn't have been a 'lol' moment for me.  More a 'computer take flight from window' moment.

Phluff... if the PSU was dead there's typically two things that cause that:
  1. overload - the psu might have been switched to the wrong voltage or the local power surged and blew it. Make sure your screen runs from it's own power socket on the wall... don't chain it off the PC (when everything starts up the surge can trip fuses). If this is the case the motherboard may also be damaged from overvoltage. Get them to check it throughly.
  2. damage - dropping in transit often cracks things that then blow when powered up. If this has hapened the HardDrives may be damaged. Run a full hardrive scan when you get themachine back and if the drives are dodgy get them to replace them. If you wait they won't accept liability.
It could be worse... you could have just spent a month waiting on an $8000 Rack-mount UPS (and had two major projects waiting because of the delay)... only to have it arrive with a huge hole in it thanks to a careless forklift driver. Honestly, how do you not notice a 4 inch hole with battery acid leaking out?!

Well good luck. I hope it all works out ok. SMILEY

Thanks Phi... great advice about the power.  The other thing I'm upset about is that they are just sending me a new power supply, and WE have to do the labor to swap it out.... and phrom what I hear, it's not that easy. *sigh*   So, I won't even know if the mother board and hard drives are ok. :/  In the mean time, the new computer is just sitting on the dining room table staring at me. =(

@phi - Yes. That's exactly how it should be.

Phluff - Ouch. Talk about anti-climactic. I also have a terrible history of having power supplies die out on me; but on a brand new system, that's even worse.

My deepest condolences. May your hardware swap be as painless as possible.

Thank you Ken SMILEY   ...maybe it was women's intuition.  I knew something was going to go wrong. *sigh*

The main things to remember when replacing the PSU are:
  1. Don't tidy the wires until after it's all pluged together.4
  2. When tiding the wires (to increase accessability and air-flow) make sure to keep them clear of fans and harddrives. They stop fans and melt on HDDs.
  3. Buy some cheep zip-ties to tidy the wires, you can always cut them off if you need to. Rubber-bands deteriorate and break very quickly inside a PC case.
  4. Make sure that if there is a voltage switch on the back of the PSU that it is set correctly. If you have it set for the wrong voltage you will blow up your PC components (yes, really, BANG! explosions and smoke)

I'm so mad now I could spit. SMILEY

The $200 Xion pwr supply that I originally ordered with the system is out of stock.
They won't have anymore till July 16th.
They offered to send (today) a substitute one instead... fine....
Until I realized the sub is a much cheaper $99 one.
So they said they would send the original on the 16th, and I could swap out again.

NOOOOO!  I'm not doing this TWICE.  SMILEY

I've been on the phone with them for an hour and a half.
Phinally I conviced them to send an equal or better value pwr supply instead.

Let me tell ya.. it took 3 phone calls, and three people to make them understand why, what they had proposed was WRONG.

Not to mention I paid $19 EXTRA phor professional wiring to begin with...  they can't refund that... period.

In the end (I think) ...I'm ok with it.

This is the power supply they are 'now' sending today, via 2 day air:  Ultra X3 800w

Phrom the looks of it... it's cables are modular, and it should be easier to swap out... can someone confirm this?  Any other advice on swapping this out would be extremely helpful.
