Don't buy from Best Buy, they are way overpriced. You would save more by either buying the parts yourself or buying directly from a manufacturer.

I would definitely go with building it yourself.  For that price, you can get a better processor, more memory, an ATI 4870x2, a better sound card, and Vista Ultimate.

EDIT:  Or, if you don't want to build it, you can go to Newegg and look for better deals.  I found this computer for you there:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N82E16883227123

Pretty much the exact same thing but with a smaller hard drive, an Nvidia card, and a better optical drive....  and it's $300 cheaper than the one you found on Best Buy.  Use that $300 to pop an extra 9800 for SLI, a few sticks of extra memory, and an extra harddrive.

You could get the best of both worlds and Get a mac the dual boot windows and xp granted not as cheap and upgradable but my mac is the fastest reliable windows machine i ever had go figure

you can get a 24 inch Dual core intel 2.8ghz

2 gigs of ram

320gig hd

and ati Radieon 2600 with 256 MB Ram

for 1799

but i would hold of maybe a few weeks or so as new imacs maybe shiping realitivly soon. Thats what ive been hearing on the mac rumor mill

the mac alternative is nice cause than if you dont want vista just pick up a OEM copy of Windows XP SP2  on ebay like what i did and that came to about 80 90 bucks after shiping

Agreed on the holding back for the new imacs, its what I've heard too.

Also, I wouldnt even pick up XP from ebay, just download it, M$ are so focused on vista they wont even notice you dont have a legit serial, plus the ones you pick up on ebay are probably pirate anyway. SMILEY

It's always better to have a legal copy of a product, especially an operating system. If you want to go with free though you might want to try out Windows 7. The beta will last until August and you'll at least be able to have a brand new operating system with full support and updates for a while (long enough to save for a copy maybe?).

Pre-made rigs always tend to gimp you on the PSU. Judging by some of the reviews on that product, it suffers from that as well.

Microsoft ended downloads of Windows 7 Beta. You have to be a technet plus subscriber to get it now.

If anyone knows a legit alternative location to download it, please let me know.

If you go to university, Hydra, there's a chance your school may have a partnership with MSDN AA, in which case you can download pretty much any MSFT product for free, XP, Vista, 7 Beta, VS Studio 2008, Xbox Game Creator, w/e. Dunno if that applies to you or not, but it's an option.

That's a good idea and I've taken advantage of that opportunity as well.

Yup, MSDNAA is sweet for free operating systems.

Another good deal available to those in further/higher education is Ultimate Steal
