I saw Ghost the other day. I didn’t talk to him though. He and Seraph were judging some sort of Special Olympics, handing out prizes and all that crap.
I can see a reason for holding these things. We need some sort of release; we need to be reminded that there’s more to our humanity than simply hiding out in caves waiting for psychos to destroy our way of life while we eat gruel; we need recognition for our achievements. It boosts us and makes us that little bit stronger inside.
I can’t help but think though that it’s a waste of time in light of current events.
I’ve seen the Kid and his little group of wannabies, running around spouting Neo’s name like it’s the name of God himself, and claiming to be fighting for him, to protect his sacrifice so that all humans can be free.
That’s a waste of time too. He can’t see further than his own idealistic sentiment that boy and neither can his cronies. I spoke to someone in the command structure and he said that the machines knew that the boy was not operating with the authority and direction of Zion and that if needs be they (The machines) have the councils blessing to deal with them in anyway that they see fit.
I can’t help but think that that’s missing the point somewhat. Yes we have told them that these EPN creeps are nothing to do with us but they are though aren’t they? They seem to be yet another sign that we as a race cannot hold our own in check, we cannot work towards a common goal without bickering and fighting amongst ourselves about the best way to go and do it. And then there’s Cryptos. Oh boy, the least said about him the better.
The way I see it, it comes back to choice. I never spoke to Morpheus when he was with us. I saw him speak like many of us about the need for Zion to remain strong and united. I did see him up close once, only briefly though. He was with his crew, and yes Neo and Trinity were with them. Never got to talk to them either. Anyway, Morpheus always believed in fate, he basically said that whether or not you believe in fate, fate believes in you. I don’t believe that though. For me we all have choices; we can choose to take the red pill or the blue, to wake or to keep dreaming although how many of us genuinely have never thought about going back in time and taking the blue pill? I have.
I’m not a Cypherite though. Those guys are just like the Kid’s lot, all trying to take our choices away from us. If a guy (or gal) wants to work for the machines then so be it! It’s in everyone’s interests that the status quo be maintained, that there is balance. I don’t mind a little boat rocking but these guys are trying to drill holes in the bottom and the boat isn’t very seaworthy to begin with!
This brings me back to Ghost.
He looked out of place at this award thing. He looked like… well… I wasn’t “awoken” till I was in my late teens. I remember being in high school and people would come in to give us talks and things and one day near the end of term the principal had been able to get a celebrity to come in and give out some awards. This guy was a celebrity in the loosest possible sense of the word; he’d been the star of some TV show a few years earlier and was still living off of it despite the fact that none of us had ever seen him on anything else. But he had been on TV and so we were in awe of this guy, he was a star! He could have known all the real celebrities as far as we were concerned.
But he looked out of place. He looked like he had no desire to be there, he looked like he’d owed someone a favour and was trying to carry it out as fast as possible and get back to his normal routine. After the presentation we were able to get an autograph off him. He just had the same fixed expression when ever he’d talk to any of us kids and everyone was bombarding him with the same questions over and over.
Now, I’m not saying for a moment that Ghost is a has-been, not for one second! But the way he was that night remind me of him. I’ve met Ghost a few times, not really to talk to as he’s not exactly the most talkative person you understand but he was cool to get on with. I watched him get mobbed by all these new guys, these new captains (seems like the council gives captain status to anyone these days!) all asking the same things and he looked uncomfortable, just like he’s rather be somewhere else.
I wonder if he set out to become part of the mythos? He is part of it whether he likes it or not but I wonder if he had to choose whether he’d do it again? Would any of us really? I think that if you ask yourself that question and the answer is yes then you made the right decision. I think that Ghost set out like so many of us to become the best that he could be in the defence of Zion. Now Zion is defended from the machines, from the exiles but not from our own selves.
Fate is not without a sense of irony, as Morpheus would say.
Ghost is a soldier but unfortunately there isn’t a war. We have a cold war now which is fought with politics, and treaties and all that junk so soldiers like him have no direction any more.
A lot of us have lost direction. I just hope that we can start to make a choice to turn those energies inward and start to repair the cracks before they get to big to fill.
Then and only then will Neo’s sacrifice have been in vain.
