Hi guys,

Lets start from the beginning...

Bought this computer in November of 2005, it is:

P4 3.4 GHz HT Processor

2 GB DDR2 Ram

Dual 80 GB 7200 RPM HD's RAID-0 configured for speed

Radeon X700Pro, which is 256MB GDDR3 PCI-E (x16)

Anyway....

Computer ran amazing when I bought it, no problems what so ever.  About 3 months ago, I can't even remember how, but I began getting blue screens, and stuff where the computer would just shut down.  IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL_TO messages etc.  Stuff that made no sense.  I ran ram testing.  I ran 6 virus scanners.  I ran stuff for months.  I had the tech take it and test it for a day.  Read through every single error message in the Event Veiwer.

Nothing seemed to work.  It would work just dandy, then all the sudden, just BSD or crash.

Anyway, that was back when I played galaxies.  I recently quit.  I can't remember, but I think I might have gotten like 1 or 2 BSD's after I quit, meaning to say that it seemed that after i stopped playing galaxies (but still have it installed) it worked better.

One day my mom said "try turning of the screensaver".  To be honest, I kinda laughed at first, because I figured that couldn't be causing the problems, but ever since I turned it off, not one blue screen.

My problem today:

A week or so ago, MxO would pause for a minute, so I minimized, to see if everything was OK.  When I minimized ATI's message would pop up that said:  VPU recoverer has reset your graphics accelerator as it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands.

So I figured it was ok, because I had seen this message before on another game, and just maximized the game and it kept playing fine.  But I noticed that after that message on MxO, maybe 15 minutes or so, the game would go black, and whatever sound ingame was playing at that current time would keep repeating itself, and creating a "machine gun" type of noise, and then my monitor would actually say "No Display".  Sometimes it would streak colors.  One time my monitor said "Not within range" and then went to "no display".

Anyway, I went and dropped my drivers, and installed catalyst controller 6.6.  Same problems.  And I tried Call of Duty 2 also, and I still got the VPU message, but the game didn't crash to no display.

I remembered how I dropped my drivers, and I did a partial uninstall.  So I took everything out of the system (driver wise) and reinstalled catalyst 6.6.   This was yesterday.  I logged in, everything was going smoothly, and then the game stopped, so I minimized and the VPU message was there.

But, it did not go to no display after awhile.  I obviously have to spend a few more days on it, but should it start to crash again, does any1 have any suggestions?  Like I said, I have a clean install on the drivers, and the newest version.

I read a message on the EQII boards of the same problem I'm having with MxO, but it said to use catalyst 6.2, but I thought it would be ok using 6.6 since it is the newer version?

Thanks,

AtoyS

Hello sniper24,

The Catalyst 6.2 drivers removed the "VPU Recover" problem that many people were having. That message should now only appear when there is actually a problem. In your case, I would verify that your card is not overheating. Make sure all of your fans are spinning, and that no dust has accrued on the heatsinks. Try running ATi's Cat-uninstaller to remove your ATi drivers, and then install the 6.2's. This way you can be positive that no other ATi driver files are conflicting.
