I just woke up.

I had a… a dream. Well, it was more of a nightmare but when you get to my age your not supposed to have nightmares are you? I have enough horrors behind my eyes when I’m awake, I don’t need them when I’m asleep. I had to get this down before I forgot about it.

I dreamt that I was in the machine city. I’ve never been there but somehow I knew the way it looked, it looked nightmarish all on it’s own but the worst thing was that it was empty. Totally deserted. Not a single… I hesitate to use the word “living” here but I don’t know what else you could call it. Not a single… living… thing.

I was walking through what I could think of as streets and I was calling, shouting out. There was no reply but I heard crying. At first it sounded like a man, crying as though his heart had been torn from him. But as I got closer to the noise it turned out to be a baby. A human child.

I picked him up and looked him over but he had no plugs in him.

Then I heard howling, screaming and yelling. It was vicious and mad and as I listened it grew in size like a mob grouping together. I picked up this child and held him close to me and I ran.

As I ran the sound started to come from everywhere, from all around me and yet I kept on running and running but it grew more and more overwhelming. The noise became like a scream, slicing through my skull with this piercing, unrelenting…

I got lost in the city. I found myself in an ally way but it was covered and made out of stone, out of brick and unlike the machine creations but I still felt like I was in the city. I turned round for the first time and saw them.

They were men but their eyes were full of fire, literally. Their bodies were deformed with heads growing out of their chests and their limbs twisted and broken. They were also part machine and vile protrusions broke through their skin, all glistening with blood and gore as they staggered and shuffled with extraordinary speed towards me.

I tried to fight. I tried to remember my skills, my training but my mind kept going blank and I realised that I had no way to defend either myself or this child. And suddenly I was truly scared, for the first time in a long time I felt fear take hold of me. I could feel it creep through my body and as I looked into the burning eyes of these monsters I knew that if they ever caught hold of me that I would die.

They encircled me and as I looked at them I could see that they stretched on for as far as the eye could see. There was no way that I could escape and no one to help me. I was alone.

They stopped just short of me and I swear that I could smell them. I could smell the… the reek of decay, the smell of death and the end of all flesh. Together they reared their collective heads back and howled and as they did, green matrix code flew out of their mouths and into the sky. I couldn’t stand the howling any longer and grabbed my ears but as I did so I dropped the baby!

Instead of falling though he just floated in the air. The creatures saw it and they changed somehow. They all fell to their knees and started to weep, as this child started to glow.

From inside this baby, white light started to pour out and out and into these things and when the glow touched them they howled once in, I suppose, a sigh of relief and then simply melted away on the wind like dust. I didn’t want the light to touch me so I huddled back against the wall behind me but it came to me anyway.

As it touched me, I woke up. I don’t know if it’s a sign or a portent or simply too much brain killer but it all felt so real like nothing that I’ve ever experienced before and I truly don’t know if I want to feel the touch of that light again.

I’m going to try and go back to sleep now, heh, that is if I can after all that. The ships at rest right now, we’re in some tunnel about a mile from the surface and Rapid has the watch. I can hear the ship rattle as it cools in parts and things spring back into shape.

I just wish that the oracle wasn’t so hard to get hold of these days; I could do with telling someone about this.
