Apologies for posting so quickly again, but I think Poison is right as well. One thing I didn't notice until now though was the actual picture of Mega City, it looks like exactly like one of the "kanji" symbols that was highlighted in the Matrix code in the last movie.

you're talking about that Y-shaped glyph you see right at the start, after the burst of gold code? That WAS megacity - as it pans out, before you see it as the glyph, you see cars, buildings, etc. For whatever reason it popped up on the matrix display like that and then vanished just as quickly.

Noticed this one today...I'm thinking Mega City is probably the whole thing; Capital City and other names are more like smaller areas within.

I mentioned NYC before for this subject, Capital City is like Brooklyn or Manhattan. Richland and Westview would be more like Little Italy in Manhattan.

Notice the name of the area in this screenshot, asking you to pay your taxes.

If they put Capital City in there, I believe they did it purposefully as they purposefully added more details than we can count.

However, in director's commentaries, they explain the the first movie was filmed in Sidney, Australia. Also, they altered the cityscape so that it wasn't instantly recognizable as Sidney. They also mention that it takes place in an unnamed US city; simply put The City as featured on the phone booths in the movie and the game.

If what PS10N says is true, and most likely is, then they came up with MegaCity afterwards. Fine. It seems to me that there are contradictions.

So in the nature of the Matrix, the choice is yours as to how you want to refer to it as. And I highly doubt anyone will be confused as to what City you are talking about.

There's a swingin' town I know called... Capital City.
People stop and scream hello in... Capital City.
It's the kind of place that makes a bum feel like a king.
And it makes a king feel like some nutty, cuckoo,
super-king.

It's against the law to frown in... Capital City.
You'll caper like a stupid clown when you chance to see...
Fourth Street and 'D'! Yeah!

Once you get a whiff of it, you'll never want to roam,
From Capital City, my home sweet, swingin' home!

Well I live in the U.K, so why don't I see drunken teens rampaging through the streets?

This has always seemed like a gray area to me, and I figure an intentional one. I always took it that the city Neo lived in was essentially a generic city. They never really named it in the movies, because there was no need to. With MxO, it becomes clear that the city is one MADE UP by the machines, and with people populating it, it had to have a name.

My thinking is this, that, for the movies, it would have been problematic for the Audience to believe that reality had been reduced to a single city. For MxO, game mechanics virtually REQUIRED that the world be limited to a single city. As PS10N points out, MegaCity is in fact technically HUGE, they couldn't possibly have created a game that also had a simulated version of the rest of the planet, other cities, etc.

But my feeling has always been that the Matrix ought to roughly simulate a whole Planet, in order for it to be believeable to its occupants. After all, when Neo looks up an article about Morpheus busting up Heathrow Airport, are we really to believe that there isn't one? If there's not, wouldn't you think someone would notice? Why would there be newspaper articles about places, that if you tried to go to them, you wouldn't be able to? I mean, yeah they pulled that off in Dark City, but only by wiping everyones brains every week, and there were still people who saw through it.

Anyway, neat topic, love the minutea of these films.

This post is 1 year old, Fen. And since we're in the Rarefaction part of MxO, i'd say we're gonna be sticking with Megacity.

as for FU state, let your imagination go wild lol.

If this thread is necroed them I'm gonna necro my older post, with a slight modification!

err.. the necroing would be my fault... I was bored and just started posting responses to things all over the place.

Considering that the post was still within the top ten subjects of this section, despite having its last response in April, I probably could be accused of necroing the entire Matrix Universe section of the forums >.<

Merry Christmas!

Megacity is a real world term which applies to two or more cities whose "urban sprawl" have met, pushing their suburbs together and eliminating any rural areas between them.  Conrac has figured out exactly how many square kilometers the four available districts cover and I'll try to get figures from him soon.  If you are going to compare square kilometers available between MxO and other MMOs, you'd best remember that a lot of the Megacity is vertical, especially in downtown.  Count the surface area of every available floor in every building in the Megacity, and I'd make a reasonable wager that we're bigger than most MMOs.  I read somewhere that MxO's Megacity is bigger than the combined five boroughs of New York City.  The "greater Toronto area" of Canada is often referred to as Megacity, as are other areas mentioned below.

From the Wikipedia entry for megacity: A megacity is usually defined as a recognized metropolitan area with a total population in excess of 10 million people.[1] Some definitions also set a minimum level for population density (at least 2,000 persons/square km). Megacities can be distinguished from global cities by their rapid growth, new forms of spatial density of population, formal and informal economics, as well as poverty, crime, and high levels of social fragmentation. A megacity can be a single metropolitan area or two or more metropolitan areas that converge upon one another. The terms conurbation and metroplex are also applied to the latter. The terms megapolis and megalopolis are sometimes used synonymously with megacity. The term metacity is also sometimes used to describe cities with more than 20 million people.

This is a page from a Reloaded set book showing the highways north of Megacity where the Mona Lisa Overdrive chase took place.  By the time Reloaded was in production, the brothers had settled on the term Megacity. (note the date, which looks like November 12, 2001)

Where did you get this picture of the Mega City Map?  Is there a version where you can actually read all the text?
