Vista comes out January last i heard...

I haven't used it yet and i know everyone says its crap.. but everyone says that EVERYTIME a new windows comes out.

ANYWAYS

When will games become playable on it? I remember a time where there were different versions of games 32bit and 64bit (i believe... might have read the lables wrong)

I would like to get vista at launch but I dont want to get it if I cant play any of my games (mainly MXO)

I know you dont offer support NOW. But will it be supported at vista launch?

I know theres some smart cookies out there so any information on vista and gaming would be appriciated. (All i find is reports on how this was F'D up or this bites or microsoft should die etc. etc. )

Thx!

Well to be honest, there's not much to say. Until the final version goes gold and is then on sale, there's really not a lot that companies can do to get their current software working on it. That said, with MXOs limited dev. team, unless the backwards compatability function works, I don't see any dedicated programing happening to make it work on Vista.

However, Vista does seem to contain a boot menu that should allow a previously installed version of Windows to be bootable (so as long as you don't just upgrade over your current Windows installation and instead, perform a complete fresh installation (on a different partition I guess) you should theoretically still be able to use your old OS to play MXO.

Personally, I'll be holding off on Vista for as long as possible as I don't like the way they "dumbed down" the entire thing, it's almost impossible now to do anything as easily as you can under XP. That and I have major issues with the way they made it "oh so secure." That's darned annoying =/

I know a lot of people are busting to get Vista, and I'm sure it will turn out to be fine, but for now I'd recommend gamers to stick to Windows XP until vista get's it's 1st service pack.
most of the high-performance issues should be sorted by then.

I agree with Chuui on this. Vista security is increased by taking ease-of-use functionality away from the user. They are already releasing vista in 9 or so flavors (media center, portable, home, corporate, etc...) There are 2 MAJOR versions they need... the "I whine about windows being insecure" and "I know what I'm doing, stop locking me out" versions. (XP Home should have never been released)

In answer to the question:...

If you MUST get Vista at launch I'd advise running a dual install so stuff that only works in XP keeps running. At present the biggest issue for gamers will be problems with DirectX 10 and current drivers not working properly with it.

Most games should work at launch, but games like MxO/Quake 4 that push your hardware to it's limits will be the real acid tests.

Just hang back and we'll see if it's another WinNT/ME or if it's a Win98/2k/XP in terms of promise versus delivery. Once people get over the fear of change it should be fine.

"I know what I'm doing, stop locking me out" version

Oh I wish. Even the Vista window's explorer is a nightmare for me to use. Gone are my list view and my file extensions. If I want those I need to use the annoying detail view that doesn't display items in the manner I wish to use them =/ That and my system apparently runs like tortoise while using Vista. I'm not upgrading my system just for an OS to run smoothly. I shouldn't have to, I also don't like having to wait 5 to 10 minutes to get logged in, it's just so slow for no apparent reason - although it cites Steam as one reason for slow shut downs (doesn't actually shut down, Vista constantly crashes on shut down for me even with nothing else installed U_U). Again, no idea why Steam is so slow, it's slow on XP too when it comes to starting up.

The other thing which really turns me off of Vista right now is that it just won't let me connect to the internet without jumping through hoops. I have to run up the connection program, tell it I don't care about possible security issues or that I don't care if it has "limited" functionality, then wait another 3 minutes as it thinks about connecting. Why I can't just tell it to connect automatically on start up is beyond me.

So yeah, I'd really advise to stick with XP (at least as a dual boot option) when it first comes out. Just so you still have ease of use.

Pentium 4 CPU 3.20GHz (also listed at 3.19GHz),
1 gig system ram
GeForce 6800 GT (256 megs ram)

Hard drives? Not sure. I can't seem to track that information down.

The PC was of course, top of the range stuff when I got it, but that was probably around 2 years ago. It'll probably be another 3 or 4 years before I can afford any major upgrades, what with kids and stuff =/
