I found this, uh, not so reassuring.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/22/AR2005092200433.html

"TOKYO (Reuters) - Struggling electronics and entertainment
conglomerate Sony Corp. <6758.T> said on Thursday it would cut
about 7 percent of its global work force, sell more than $1
billion in assets and post a loss this year."

"The company said it now expected to post a group operating
loss of 20 billion yen in the current business year to March
due to an increase in restructuring charges. Sony's previous
estimate was for an operating profit of 30 billion yen."

50 billion yen off their mark. Woooops! Sony already lost to Apple in
the MP3 player market, and failed in the flatscreen market. I hope the
Nintendo Revolution doesn't totally kill off the Playstation. The PS3
is expected, like both Xbox releases, to cost Sony more than it makes.

Hopefully none of this causes problems for MXO in the long run.

As much as I talk **bleep** about this game I will never leave. If they meet
my basic expectations(WHAT THE BACK OF THE **bleep**ING BOX SAYS!!!!!!) then
I will shut up and enjoy myself. Until then I'll happily pay them to
see me **bleep** on their forums.

I'm sure SOE won't be effected. 7% isn't much.

that
could be worse I suppose but if they have lost 7% they could lose alot
more, 7% may not seem alot to you but if it was your company you would
soon notice 7% less cash.

Sony is a huge conglomerate.  The focus of the layoffs is in their hardware divisions and manufacturing.  Services (like SOE) will likely be unaffected by this announcement.

the new Nintendo will not be any kind of threat to the PS3,i mean its controller is "Nintentarded" .

sorry for going off topic

this really wont hurt sony any i mean they have move, music, television and video game productions that will keep them in cash for a verry long time(IE: FFVI advant children).and while there sucking in the pc/mp3 market they do make realy good stero components and televisions

I hate the PS3 control and I totally love PS2 but the control for PS2 that is shown to the public is only a prototype so it is safe to say that we will not be stuck with a wireless bommerange I mean errr control. :smileyhappy:

I totally disgree about the Nintendo controller. It's one of the steps
in creating the Metaverse. We already have the network. All thats
missing is the VR headset.

Well going with the OT nintendo controller, I think it looks pretty slick.  I've been playing predominantly on nintendos since I was a kid, so I have a certain brand loyalty.  I'm at least going to give the controller a chance before I dismiss it.   If games implementing it well come out, I think it'll go over.

As for Sony cutting jobs, I like that company too, and feel bad for people getting fired (downsizing just doesn't cut it), though that is a reality of the economic system in place.  Hope it doesn't affect MxO, and hope the people who do lose their jobs find new ones that are more to their liking.

Almost all console makers lose money per every unit sold...the real
money is in the people making games for that system...every time
someone makes a game for your system you get a chunk of the money they
make.

I bet most of those jobs are in the PS2 hardware making division, since they are ramping up PS3 production soon.

Meh. As long as this game exists, there will always be somebody around
to find an excuse to scream "THE SKY IS FALLING, WE'RE ALL DOOMED!"

And why exactly would they change the production locations/employees exactly?

The guys who make PS2 will make PS3 too.  Why would they change them?

Oops I just noticed I made a typo in saying I hate the PS2 control. THe PS2 control owns! A lot better than what Xbox came out with. What I was saying is that I hate the PS3 control but of course it is only a prototype.
