While the scene isn't entirely embedded in my mind, I think one of the points of the scene is the fact that the brain is completely fooled into believing it's breathing, making it real - similar to the old way of being killed in the Matrix.

As for exiles (programs are a different matter), most can die in conventional methods. However, as knowledge of the Matrix increases, alternate methods are found. They found that by changing a certain aspect of their code, it would have a desired result on their strength. However, it always seems to have a negative result on them - Lupines start turning feral, Vampires have an insatiable bloodlust - literally, and so on. Like most programs, including 01 robots, they probably found a curious interest in our human books, films and media, and in a possible homage to these fictional creations of man took on the form which most suited their affliction/improvement.

As for Seraph... can he survive? It depends on whether he believes he can.

And some [s]plot devices[/s] code vials.
