Mission:            88932-23
Day:                2

We’ve docked with the Bastigone to take on board a new crewmember and in this case a new first mate. Her name is xWarAngelx and she’s taking over Silverfox13’s duties on the ship. War and myself go back a long time and even though we do have a “history” she is still, in my opinion, a good first officer to have. I’m looking forward to the next few weeks to see how well she handles herself.

Hydr0gen is coming on in leaps and bounds. His energy and drive seems constant and even Rapid’s having trouble keeping up with him. I think it won’t be long before he ends up in charge of his own ship although that’s not my call. With a bit of luck the deciding officer wont be Anome.

Our other member Keakiri is proving just as useful. To be honest she is keeping herself mainly to herself, not out of a sense of isolation but really out of concentration. After breakfasts she disappears into the bowels of the ship and she comes back at the end of the day covered in grease and I ask her “What have you been doing? I’ve not noticed anything change.” and every time she says “Exactly.” When we do get together at the end of the day she can hold her own among the mess conversation.

After a brief meet and greet with Mandlebrot and his crew (the first time I’ve seen him in the flesh for about four months) we left them to carry out their duties and us to carry out ours. At about 4pm we broke the surface.

I’ve been to the surface only once in the past and that was during my initial release from my pod, same as the rest of my crew. I’ve seen in the constructs but nothing prepares you for what you feel when you lay your own eyes on it. People call it the “desert of the real” and I’m afraid I can’t agree with them. It’s not a desert; a desert doesn’t have this much stuff in it.

Our heading is due North-North-West and towards what used to be the United Kingdom. From our current position it will take us about 23 hours due to certain restraints imposed on us. Our agreement with the machines is that they will allow us to go about our mission as long as we allow our movements to be tracked at all times. Under the circumstances it’s understandable but I can’t help but think it’s a bit of a liberty. We’re heading away from 01 and as far as I understand it, and assuming that our Intel is correct, our destination has no vulnerable or important positions. Maybe they’re just playing the odds but regardless it all seems odd. Maybe it’s nothing but regardless it’s not what we’re there for.
