It's human nature to want to know. We're inquisitive. We like questioning things. We can't help it.
Becoming aware of the matrix, even before taking the red pill, is inherent in everyone. Every bluepill is subconsciouslly aware of the matrix, but in order for the system to be effective it must present the choice to either accept or reject it, if even at a subconscious level. 99% of bluepills choose to ignore that splinter in their mind.
Even if everyone were re-inserted, there would still be that 1% who choose to embrace their awareness of the system and seek out the red pill.
The choice to accept or reject the matrix is much more than just taking the red or blue pill. The choice is constantly occuring in our minds.
These are just a few of my interpretations, of course.
