So just for yucks, I coded up Data Miner and started wandering around tapping.

You know, it is a very sedate, very mellow pasttime.  Kind of like
collecting butterflies, I suppose.  It is the ideal thing to load
up while you are scouting areas of MegaCity for a new event or for a
new faction hideout.

Even if you don't tap nodes, wandering around with the goggles on is very Matrixey.

You just wasted info and code bits/frags for nothing :smileywink:.

So because I'm a masocist also I decided to code this tree up and check
it out, but for the life of me I can find either the advanced data tap
or the advanced goggles.  I get drops for the ordinary one on
occassion but the advanced ones must be really rare.  Anyone have
an ideas (or that can make them, I'm on Syntax)?

I'm hoping that, with the recent Coder nerf (regarding code bits etc.), they'll make the Data Miner tree be able to "mine" code bits as well as $info. Even if the $info drops are pathetic...

Good thinking, Zenshin.  I am wondering if the ability to grab frags off a data node was another "unadvertised special"

As for the advanced data stuff, I got them as loot in missions, then
decomped and rewrote them.  I seem to recall a vendor Downtown
that had them but I'll be damned if I an remember where.  I was
running around doing hardlines last night.

I'm sure that one of the tool vendors downtown has the advanced data node goggles and advanced data tap.

Yes, downtown has the Advance Data Goggles.

I to have coded DataMiner, and MAXed it out...I would love to hear Walrus's input on this, but it SERIOUSLY seems to be a mistake of how much data you pull, on the order of about 10.  At lvl 50, I can pull almost 2400 in DT per certain Data taps.  That is the MOST I have ever been able to get.  I honestly think this is off by x10.  If you could pull 24,000 per tap, that again doesn't SEEM like much, but 4 or 5 taps and its 100K.  Faster than missions, yet the ENTIRE TREE is deticated to it, and serves no other purpose (besides pawning in PvP).  So, you Can't be a good fighter with Data Miner (except PvP) and would have to invest info, time and effort to level it up and obtain it.

So, the nitty gritty, if the info extrated was x10, we'd probably see a few more Data Miners.

My x10's worth.

And oh, for the groaners all Comments in () are sarcastic... SMILEY

Nice one, GW.

As much as people complain about how pointless Data Mining is, it is
gratifying that there are a few out there that are patient enough to
wait to see what changes might come about.

It is right up there with waiting to see what Cryptography will finally be used for... SMILEY

I too have had an on again off again usage of Data Miner. I had such
high hopes for it when I first heard about this game before even beta,
hearing that you could pull the hidden documents for missions with it
and earn XP and info and I thought to myself "Wow that is really nice
of them to do for people who don't want to run missions etc over and
over and over again" And now that I am here in live I'm actually kind
of dissapointed by it, though I am sure that tweaking Data Miner will
be a part of the upcoming tweaks to the Spy branch so I look forward to
what is going to happen to it.

And Weasel you're right it is a nice, calm and mellow past time. Though
I would liken it more to stamp collecting than to butterflies.

Lets see what you think about my Idea.

There is no different between standart DataTap and Advanced DataTap. So
lets call the Advanced DataTap, CodeTap. When you tap in Richland or
Westview you got only bits and Interfaces. When you tap in
International you got Obejcts and bits and rarly some patches. If you
tap in Downtown you will get bits and Subroutines. But no $Info.

For $Info you must use the DataTap. But the amount of node tapping is
realy worse, so let us tap an big node at one turn. But the chance of
an effective complete tap of an big node depents by the skill of your
DataMiner Abilitys.

So if you tap an big node it will say you:

You have taped a class5 node

4 prosperous taps: 8650$Info received

1 abortive tap: 2460$Info lost

Another Idea is, to get Informations about the plans of other factions.
So if you are an Mero and you tap an datanode you will recieve casual
special code drops like the RSI Fragments like the N3oAgents event RSI
fragments.

This would make the DataMiner tree more interresting then it is now.

It was supposed to hoover items also not only XP/Info.  Best thing
they could do with it is make it hoover also clothing including rare
construct drops, so people who are past certain construct level
boundaries have a slight chance of getting these items thru data mining.

Has anyone figured if stats have any effect on the data mining
results?  I have enough Reason Boosting clothes but I don't see a
difference per node.  <shrug>
