I loved this mission, as well as the other two - the way the story's going right now is really interesting.
And I thought the Colonel thing was a reference to the Architect's resembelence to Colonel Sanders - and not Col Campbell.
Makes a lot more sense now after reviewing the last Merv event. The topographical data apparently reveals the location of Halborns colony. So it seems that the Machines are protecting it or have an agreement with someone that they will not interfere with it or it's inhabitants, but that doesn't mean that they can't allow Humans to locate Carlyne and lead Halborn to his location...
