i think custo avatars are a good idea but i think you should have to earn them like on some other forums
like when you reach controler status you can put in an avatar and as you rise through the ranks better options become avaliable. (although you shouldnt make some of them unobtainable like transendant is atm)
We already have material unsuitable for children! (Like teh uber hippie avatar)

I always wanted to use a VashdaStampede avatar...
there allready is material unsuitable for younger users on the fourums
look at some of the sigs - although the mods have the power to ban thoes sigs or revoke the sig rights.
maybe wheb the fourm upgrade comes in the custom avatars will come with it
(and for the kids - the ability for the mod's to moderate the custom avatars block or ban unsuitable material and revoke the users avatar rights.)
that way everyone wins including teh kids who surf these here forums.
