while in combat many people have probbably noticed this but when you do damage to someone if they die from that attack and your attack does more damage needed to kill them the combat chatbox says how much damage you would have done, but on the npc's body it shows how much damage was really done.
i wil post an example picture in a sec.

Doesn't really seem like a big deal to me, and it's been this way forever. You get to see how much damage your attack was capable of doing, and how much it actually took to kill the baddie. You can actually use this as a guage to determine how damaging your finishing blow needs to be, thus saving you IS in the end.

Yeah, this one has been left as is on purpose. It's actually really useful, for instance as a spy, I can see how much extra damage my sneak attack would have done, so I can figure if I can take out a particular bad guy with one hit or not, etc.

Hmmm, I'd never thought of it like that. Interesting ..
