Fact is, A private project has more chance of merging a server then Sony Online Entertainment, If anyone can recall sony had a merge on a Star wars galaxy server a while back, only problem is there was a major crash where they messed up and they lost an entire database of characters for one server, mine was one of them, had like a level 49 Bounty Hunter :p.
They said they would get it back up asap, one month later i recieve my character back, items are missing and a bunch of problems are still remaining. Most of the people from the merged server left to other servers because it had horrible lag and lots of problems because it was so huge.
Back in 2005 or 6, when they "Merged" into SoE, Sony Online Entertainment Fired the entire team of devolpers who spent their good few years working on this game, kept Walrus on because he was a valuable asset to the game as it was his devolping project at monolith, offered him a little more money then what he had at SoE and ruined their chances of making this game better.
The original combat system was the best and unique combat system i had ever seen in my life, the combat for the game was awesome the moves were awesome, but Sony being Sony, Had to go at and remove it all because it was either too violent or PC's couldn't handle it back then, which in high spec Matrix Online is what Crysis is for 2004-2005.
Problem with the contract between SOE and Monolith is they got rights over the MMO to sell it and produce more of it, but they didn't gain the rights to the source code of the game, so they messed up by sacking off the only devolpment team that could work on the code, the devolpers in SOE had to spend a good half a year reverse engineering this game and implant what they called the best combat system ever. It's new its improved, you don't have the poor dice system yadda yadda yadda.
Since then they added tons of stuff, i mean they still have not fixed the bug where you fall through the map in Mara Central, from closed beta. Closed beta being 4-5 Years ago. How does it take 5 Years to fix a peice of code, oh yeah sorry we can't edit that because we didn't design the game.
Honestly, you won't get a server merge and if you "DO" get one, be prepared because you may have to start again. I'll tell you something from my personal experience with servers and databases and my friends views from previous working clients in different companies, when it comes down to merging a server of this size, it would take quite a few weeks if you had the required hands, but as Sony Online Entertainment has a terrible technical support and maintaince support, i don't see it happening in a few weeks, I'm going to go for 4-5months the same rough amount of time it took them to produce the game into what it was now. They did an awesome job of splitting the servers apart but if you have 3 characters per server, and before you only had 1-2 Characters per server, how are they going to merge 3 into 6 with millions of players that have either not played since when ever or new players.
On the side note, no matter what SOE does, it won't stop me playing my favorate MMO

Does it really matter if it will take weeks or months to create a solution? No. Does it matter that SOE have butchered other games while trying to implement something like what we are asking? No. Does it matter if you think Psion is right or wrong... NO.
