Hi Devs!

I've mentioned this on other random threads, but thought I'd re-post the idea here.

When I started in beta in Nov. 2004, there wasn't a working tutorial.  I learned by trial and error (mostly error).

Then that great Tutorial with Link came up, and it was (and still is) excellent.  It really, really helps new players to get comfortable with game mechanics.  (The addition of the ID card and the Uriah collectors was a nice touch, BTW).

What I'm seriously wishing for is a new tutorial where we can practice, practice, practice until we have enough of a comfort level to ease into the new system.  We can all practice on Bob to our heart's content.  (Note this must entail existing characters tio be able to enter the tutorial again...call it a tutorial construct if you will.  There already exists a header for "Constructs" under the hardline list that is currently being unused).

I really feel uncomfortable on the QA server.  I try every possible buff combination and every possible tree available to me and I still get pwned in a couple of headshots.  Plus I'm unclear as to what's going on while I'm fighting, and I'm unclear as to what Special Moves I'm doing, or if they are even working at all.

Trial and error is okay to a certain point, but I just don't feel comfortable constantly getting pwned not knowing what I'm doing.  Some players have taken the time to figure out all the mathematical probabilities of what works and what doesn't.  Frankly I don't have all that time it takes to figure this time out (despite me being a quick learner with a long attention span), and I get embarrassed constantly getting pwned by my peers at Mara C., or by con-grey mobs that take me down in a hail of bullets.

That's why I feel he perfect solution is to have a tutorial construct where we are actually taught this stuff...taught by those of you who are designing CR2.  We can learn at our own pace, our comfort level.  And lol, we don't need Harrold Perrineau or whatever his name is to do the voice over.....I'll ADR it, for heaven's sake....as long as we get debriefed on what to do..

Bottom line:  I really want to learn the new system you have in mind for us.  I think a lot of us feel this way.  Give us the tools to teach us besides trial and error.   Yes, maybe it will take a little more time, and I know you guys have deadlines and target dates.  But I say it's better to do things right the first time than whack-a-moling things till they eventually work themselves out, which could take eons.  So I sincerely hope you take my idea into consideration.

Oh and, as an added bonus, a tutorial construct fits in beautifully with the whole Matrix franchise!

Cheers,

Villemar

Please stop talking about getting 'pawned' first.

Second, as a newbie you'll learn the new CU2.0 as you level to fifty. The tutorial will only give you the basics of the game. It's like that in the live version, and it will be like that in the new combat version. You'll need the same time to learn CU2.0 as you needed when you learned the old combat system first.

You'll have to acknowledge that CU2.0 is basically a new game. You'll be a newbie again. No tutorial whatsoever will make you a 'pro' with the new version in a day. You will HAVE to take your time to relearn the game again. That WILL gonna happen.

A new tutorial WILL come, and it WILL help you learn the new combat system. But it will not make you an expert with it in no time.

My advice would be to take your time and actually acknowledge that you'll be a newbie again (not meant derrogative) with this combat system and to acknowledge that you'll have to train, test, and learn the new combat system like everyone else. Hop on the QA server and do it now, instead of waiting till it hits live.

Nobody cares if you're getting 'pawned' in duels on the QA server. Or is your ego really hurt if you lose a duel on the QA?

That's probably the most snide response I've ever heard from one of the most constructive posts I've ever posted.   I think my idea is great, and I bet the devs think it's a pretty dammed good idea as well.  In fact I'd love to hear some opinions from others on this.

To quote my Lord Frenchman:  "Mark my words, boy, and mark them well..."

If this thing is foisted upon us in a half-assed whack-a-mole style where no one knows what they are doing except for a handful of mathematical probability buffs, you are going to see a lovely game exodus.

Guess what.  We pay good money for this game.  The game is supposed to be fun, that's the whole point.  Stumbling around in the dark like an idiot is not fun.  I shouldn't have to pay money for another beta version of this game....I've already put in my beta time.  Look around you and read some of these posts.  We have our concerns about the new system (as we should).

All I did was post a constructive idea, and was rewarded by you with an unwarranted flame.

I love this game.  I want it to succeed.  I'm trying to help.  I'm trying to brainstorm.  I don't know what you're doing.

Let me clarify myself.

There will be a new tutorial. It will help new players with the new combat system.

You said, you don't have the time to figure out the new combat system (unlike others) on your own. But on the other hand you'd like to have a tutorial construct where you could take your time to learn the new combat system on your own at your own pace.

That's what seemed a bit contradictory to me in your original post.

If you want to test the new combat system on your own pace, why don't you search a green mob and fight him over and over and over and over again? Remember: Bob's nothing else than a green mob.

Oh, and here's some guide to help you understand the combat revision (that you apparently already read SMILEY):

Well, thanks for clarifying that your post was not intended as a flame.  And yes I did read the Combat 2.0 for dummies.  But like most people I learn my doing so that I don't have to calculate stuff in my mind while I'm playing.  I want to get to point where it is instinctual.   I think very few of us are at that stage.  I want to be ready instinctually when this comes out, and I think my "put the tutorial on the front burner" is still a very valid and good idea and would put us nicely on that path.  Anyways you know where I stand and I know where you stand.  I'd like to hear other people's opinions on the matter.

i agree vilemar, a new tutorial is absolutley neccessary, and MUST be implemented b4 they take this thing live, not everyone has the time to download and patch the testserver, it might also be a good idea to make a more in depth tutorial this time round, i know for a fact that the old tutorial barely skimmed the rudiments of combat, didn't give any detail's on bonuses, buffs or anything, next time round do it right, make an indepth tutorial that gives us more information on how players win a round, how bonuses/influences work etc.
