Well, IMO it's close to the "respect" alternative, but not so much about respect. Morpheus was one of the most active members of the Zion fleet when it comes to bluepill interaction. He performed countless actions which could only be explained to the bluepills as terrorism (ie. blowing stuff up and such). He probably tried to spread the word about the Matrix too (which is, I guess, how Neo knew about the word "Matrix"), so his attempts were probably well known. And since he never struck me as the shy type, I think he indentified his name well (for instance, so some people might have a clue at who to look when trying to find him). So he became known as Morpheus for the people of the Matrix. And so he became known as Morpheus, and the Agents started calling him by that alias too.

Smith calls Neo "Mr Anderson" constantly as a mark of disrespect. He
refuses to acknowledge him as the One and uses the name to constantly
belittle him. Notice how p!ssed Neo gets in the subway.

Well like i said, all the agents in MxO have called Neo Mr.Anderson so unless they ALL hate Neo then it isnt meant as a sign of either respect or disrespect.

Daniel is a part mythical, part historical figure who interpreted the dreams of Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel was also the successor to the character of Morpheus in the Neil Gaiman graphic novels. Dream of The Endless was printed by DC Comics and featured Dream/Morpheus as the principle character. He eventually "died" and was replaced by a character called Daniel Hall, who then inherited the name of Dream. They shared very similar powers and were described as being different views of the same subject. Is Daniel the first name of Morpheus? There is nothing to suggest that the Bluepill name of Morpheus was Daniel. Morpheus is most likely to have used the name "Daniel" in naming The Daniel Institute of Dream Interpretation, because of the link to dream interpretation. The whole idea of an instuitute which interprets dreams would be a useful facade for Morpheus: It accomodates the discussion of the perception of Reality; in a context which would not seem unnatural or out of place. The Wachowski Brothers have stated that part of original inspiration for the character of Morpheus, came from Gaiman's graphic novels. Laurence Fishburne's haunting voice was said to remind them of the unique style of speech which Dream was always shown to use in the DC comics. /triviastop

Sorry X, just gotta say.. SUPER NECRO FTW!! lol, but i'm game. I'm inclined to think that the "he was too young" part is the answer here. The movies indicate that most people are freed when they are still young. It might have been a decade or more between the time when Morpheus was surreptitiously freed, and he returned to the Matrix as an Operative. The system would know him by his hacker alias. Heck, even if he had an official name as an Orphan, they might not be able to match up the identity of an adult man with his child RSI. So they maybe just don't know. I think its equally possible thats its just an oversight, that the Bro's didn't yet realize how an*l their legions of fans would become over every little detail of these films.

EndlessVoid wrote: By the way... Neo isn't the only one who gets called by his bluepill name by an Agent in the films. When Agent Smith takes Cypher out to dinner, he refers to him as "Mr. Reagan." I don't know if the name has any further symbolism, but Cypher does express interests in not being able to remember anything, and being made "someone important... like an actor."
- Void Just in case anyone didn't notice the really obvious. Ronald Reagan was an actor (tick), president (someone important - tick) and has alzheimer's (doesn't remember anything - tick). I loled at that the first time I saw the movie.
