No. Since we don't live in the Matrix, there's really no point in buying a house and fixing it up all nice and whatnot.

She was probably role-playing. My "apartment" is near the Midian Park West hardline. I actually finally saw it as a mission area just a few months ago for the first time.

Well, some of the redpills certainly consider the Matrix their second home (or just their home) and go there whenever possible. Having an apartment there wouldn't be that nonsensical.
However, this game simply doesn't have this feature, and that's that SMILEY

The closest thing to having your own place in the setting of the Matrix universe is having your own base.  In the missions we see that the organizations have numerous resources in the city.  Redpill Extraction Points, bases, safehouses, listening posts, labs, etc.  Though I agree with Zeroone that having an apartment isn't too nonsensical, especially in the post-Revolutions era.

But as people have said, there's currently no feature in the game that allows you to officially take over a building or room.

It would be a cool feature to have though.  We could open up a
Suburbs district that is unrestrictive where players can use their
infos to buy lots to build their houses or apartments on.  Eh one
of my friend plays The Sim Online, so sue me lol.

To buy houses for individual use won't be that useful. What should be cool is to buy bases for factions and crews.

Anyway, I don't think the game engine allows any way of customization of the maps. The textures of the neibhoods are stored in a single file, and allowing customization will require a big change to the game engine, which I don't think the devs want to introduce, and have time/resources to do it.

Couldn't one simply make some of the houses in Mannsdale Housing Projects available for purchase?

Not the houses themselves, but copy the models?

Meh, I think it would be cool for Mervs such as myself, but Zion could get...uhm...caves or something?

And machines would look tight in their toasters SMILEY

We are going to get org meeting areas through the doors in the white hallway. This must be the devs way of giving us an area of our own so ideas like this probably won't happen.

Speaking of Role Playing "houses"... I'd love if there were more little area's like that. I really love the big server hook ups and such in the mission area, the kind that make it look alot like a computer store? I wish some of those were accessible without needing a mission area.
