Actually, it calculates more than the time of the day, like positions of stars and such, along with the amount of time between olympic games. Also, a sundial is a stationary piece of equipment. This uses it's gears and whatnot to make it's calculations and measurements of future events.

And Cadsuane is right, we have been moving backwards SMILEY It's interesting how technological advancement can reach a certain point and disappear for the better part of a thousand years, forcing us to figure it out all over again.
