Hi, I have been playing MxO for about a week (got the box at Fanfaire and since I had station access ...).

I have tried several times to take my 10-13 levels on missions with an infiltration loadout to sneak in and out (like to steal files from an insecure comp/desk). So far, no luck -- I sneak in the first populated room, get within normal aggro range. and wham (this is with all skills maxed on a medium mission and with balanced stats).

The reason I am even trying this is that, to me at least,  the idea of walking into a suite of offices with guns blazing is weird, like they can't hear the running gun battle everywhere in the building (and even just being shot at should bring the whole gang running).

So questions:

  • Is what I am trying even feasible at my level? Or at any level?

  • Are there tools needed for sneak to succeed in this situation?

  • Is this a technique problem (line-of-sight or other)?

  • Does this require a specializes stat profile?

Yes it is. Just try to stay away from the guards as much as possible and I think whenever you open a container of some sort you always go out of sneak. Thats when you grab what your looking for and run.

I don't think so. There are tools however to find the weaknesses of enemies (if you want to be offensive), trap disarmers and pick locks which you will need.

  • Is this a technique problem (line-of-sight or other)?

Yes probably I think what you might have to do is stay still when they are looking in your direction.

Spend most of your stat points on perception because that has a sneak movement bonus of 2%.

Hey SwordMage,

I just started playing a few days ago also, have reached level 10 by using a melee/ranged loadout.  Just today I decided to try some different loadouts and a Spy load was one of them.

I found the same problem practicing on green mobs on up in that I was discovered while in Sneak mode more often than not which negated my Spinning Kick move and left me with only Posion Dagger.

After that all I had were guns/melee with little to no mods for that type of combat.  I had loaded up the skills for Node tapping/detection so might have robbed myself of one or two other attacks/skills but it seems to me that if you are not a melee/ranged attack Operative you will not solo anyhting easily or in a timely manner.

A few things, as I'm levelling a spy alt right now. Ensure your spy
buff is running, as that gives you additional stealth. Looks for
'LilQuick sneakers' and 'Z Gi' from collectors.

Personally I hardly ever get detected, so I really don't know what you might be doing wrong.

I've seen it said that the Spy tree (and coding) are intended as support trees. Spies have someone else distracting targets so you can keep slinking around behind to drop huge bombs. I've been on the trial for a few days (seeing how the game has changed since early beta, tons!!) and I wanted to see how the Spy path was too. It was pretty frustrating up until I picked up the sweep under Infil and now combat is a lot easier.

I also get a lot of frustrating moments due to the sneak mechanic. Sneaking behind targets and standing still in front of them is fine, it's a lot like PlanetSide so I'm used to it. What I don't like is the partial-spot mechanic where a mob will turn to stare at you and even if they don't spot you they always stare straight at you so, even if you can move without breaking stealth, you can never get out of LOS. Bug? Intentional design? I dunno but it really puts a damper on Spy tree soloing. I've taken to putting 4 points into coder just so I can throw an Aikidobot into the mix for distraction. The loss of points hurt but it makes a huge difference.

And something else to remember. Hacker and Patcher types will have their Evade Combat shield up so don't forget to use your disable tool. I missed my first few times and didn't understand it but it seems that if you hit you usually stay stealthed (or pop out and back in) so you can freely land a Drop Kick to the back of their head.

I haven't had a chance to group yet (people don't seem very social) but I'm sure if you treat the class as support DPS (and mission helper with disguise/disable/pick if you go infil>shadow) it'll play a lot more smoothly.
