Director Abrams to resurrect "Star Trek" Mon Feb 26, 4:43 AM ET AP WIRE The Starship Enterprise finally has a new captain. After months of speculation, "Mission: Impossible III" director J.J. Abrams has signed on to shoot the next installment of the "Star Trek" feature franchise, sources said late Friday. "Star Trek XI" revolves around a young James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, chronicling their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and their first space mission. The previous film in the series, the 2002 box office bomb, "Star Trek: Nemesis," was directed by Stuart Baird, and starred Patrick Stewart. Abrams, the prolific co-creator/executive producer of "Lost" and director of last year's "M:I III," has been developing the project through his Paramount-based Bad Robot shingle as a producer and writer. But Abrams did not commit to directing the project until Friday evening, when the deal was finalized, sources said.

To hell with the enterprise, do a movie about voyager, or deep space 9 for pete's sake or use the movie as a launching board for a new chapter of the franchise.

But Voyager is over, DS9 I didnt watch that much but didnt the Captain die or something in the end? Plus it was to relationshipy which suxed. I think maybe a new ship with a deep space exploration focus or something would pwn.

Anyone here read the Star Trek: Titan books? Now there's a movie i'd like to see. The cast would have a couple people from TNG, mostly just Riker and Troi. I know, I know they're getting older and (as seen when Johnathan Frakes talked about Trek in "How William Shatner Changed the World" . But, the other characters, new species on the Titan (some of them would -have- to be CGI-based) really add a lot to the Star Trek universe. Plus have you seen the USS Titan? It was designed by a fan who won the contest. "The USS Titan (NCC-80102) is a Luna-class starship*, designed primarily for scientific discovery. Described as 450 metres long, the Titan was built with state-of-the-art science facilities as opposed to being a more tactically pronounced starship. With a complement of approximately 350 persons, the USS Titan comprises the most racially diverse crew in Starfleet, with less than 15% of the population being human, as well as a number of non-humanoid beings." Now that's a Starship worthy of a movie. I mean, I'm a pretty big Trekkie and all, and I respect the Original Series, but a prequel was not the direction Star Trek should be going. "To boldly go when noone has gone before." With this new idea, we're just going back. Granted, going back is what they did with Enterprise, but Gene Roddenberry's been dead for around 16 years now. He never lived to help work on DS9, Voyager, nor Enterprise. I personally liked Enterprise, they'd just gotten fresh writers and were really turning the story around when they got cancelled. Yikes, this has turned into a personal rant. Basically, if you haven't read the ST: Titan books go out and get them, they're fantastic. Being a Trekkie I will go and see the new movie opening night. Abrams better not screw this up, it's my main Star Trek fix until ST:Online beta starts.

yeah i wish i could read those *CENSORED* books, but yeah europe sucks, i havent seen em over here. and since the Titan continues where Star Trek Nemesis ends: Riker and Troi promoted to the Titan. but you'd think they would make a movie based after Star Trek Nemesis, which they dont coz they have Star Trek Online. according to Wikipedia: The game is to be set in the early years of the 25th Century (just beyond the eras of TNG, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager), approximately twenty years after Star Trek Nemesis(the latest movie). Missions will include storylines that involve established characters from the Star Trek franchise. Players will begin at Starfleet Academy where they will learn basic game skills, before progressing to Starship assignments. Players will be able to live in crew quarters on ships, on planets, or on starbases. so a movie couldnt fit between or after that imo

In my humble opinion only TNG and VOY hold any decent water. TNG because it was just so well done and VOY because it in many ways it kept the TNG spirt while at the same time really opening interesting questions. Not to mention it had the borg in it more than any other show which is always a plus.

I'm not the biggest Star Trek fan but they should follow suit like all the other rehashes and start a new chapter. Maybe 100 years in the future or something. Or perhaps show how it all started. First trip into space and what not. First meeting with aliens. I dunno....then again....I'm not the biggest Star Trek fan.
