neo was the first machinist: he pursued an agenda of peace and realized
the futility of the struggle. he could have done the same thing as
smith, but chose truce.

as for mr reinhart (however you spell it), he was just a dude. the real
foreshadowing in that scene is when neo looks out the window at the
window washers. that part foreshadows him having to run from the agents
and also the helicopter crash.

he couldnt be that important, since tommys attention isnt on him.

There's lots of little things in the first movie that meant nothing to you the first time, but now they really make you think, now that you've seen the whole trilogy. My personal favorite:

The Oracle: (about the vase that Neo breaks) "I said don't worry about it. I'll get one of my kids to fix it."

Since we now know the Oracle is the Mother of the Matrix, we can only wonder, did she mean one of the kids in the front room? Or perhaps a program?
