Zion - Zion represents all of the humans living in the city of New Zion, and all Matrix Operatives, Operatives, and Mission Controllers working for the shared goals of Zion High Command. After the Truce was enacted via Neo's alleged destruction of Smith, Zion began building a new city without Machine knowledge. The very act of building the city, once discovered over two years later, was grounds for the Machines to terminate the Truce, and so they destroyed the old city of Zion. However, the current city of New Zion is withstanding Machine assault.

Lock - The former commander of all Zion forces, for the military of Zion's defenses and the Hovercraft fleet that hacks periodically into the Matrix to free more humans as potential recruits. He was the love interest of Niobe for a time. His tactical prowesses has likely been the sole reason for Old Zion's extended survival. Again, speculation - he could very easily have been the cause for the end of the Truce. When Old Zion was destroyed in the Machine assault, Lock was trapped within the ruins of the city with fellow operative Mauser, until he was rescued by EPN soldiers.

Commander Roland - A former Zion captain, his was one of many ships that was ordered by Commander Lock to a choke point outside of Old Zion in an attempt to hold or even push back the imminent Machine assault. His ship, having miraculously survived Smith's sabotage, was critical in finding the Nebuchadnezzar, Vigilant, and Logos. His ship was destroyed in the battle of Zion's docks by its own EMP, which stalled for enough time that Neo was able to create the Truce. He was promoted to Commander after Lock's disappearance in the fall of Old Zion.

Tyndall - A Mission Controller known for affectionately calling operatives that report to her "Warriors," Tyndall is unable to jack into the Matrix herself because of a wound she sustained from fighting Agents. Her calm and warm demeanor serves to install a sense of safety in the operative, even during times of peril. Quite possibly the most innocent of all the characters in the Matrix Online.

Niobe - A Zion captain, former love affair of Captain Morpheus and Commander Lock, Niobe has learned from past betrayals to never trust anyone within the Matrix, making her much darker and angrier than she was originally depicted at the start of the Truce, more fitting to her role in Enter the Matrix. She was once betrayed by her personal Mission Controller, Anome, and locked away in a custom-made construct until the Merovingian freed her, despite her attempt on his life several months earlier. She was almost killed by the Assassin.

Ghost - A Zion soldier, philosopher, and expert rifleman. Proud owner of a large tally of headshots. Recently has taken up large efforts in protecting the Biological Interface Program from the Oligarchy.

Anome - A former Mission Controller for Niobe and her followers, Anome was a weak operative with a loud mouth and nothing to prove. Constantly bullied and looked down upon by his fellow operatives, Anome went insane and stole code-modified vials that granted Neo-like powers and altered them so that his followers could all become nearly Neo-like. His personal army raged across the Matrix, while their bodies withered in the Real due to the effects of the code modifiers. He was eventually killed by Agents using specialized kill codes, one of them impersonating his own mother to cause him to lower his guard.

Colt - A Zion operative and crewmate to Roland. Colt was promoted to Captain status after the promotion of Roland. A cocky man that prefers single-pistol combat, Colt is known to value his sex appeal, sometimes even accepting clothes from other redpills and showing them off.

Mauser - One of Roland's crewmates, who was killed when Danielle Wright, escaping the Matrix, overrode his mind with her own and took control of his body. Wright, under the guise of Mauser, rescued and healed Commander Lock after the fall of Zion, and proceeded to jack into the Matrix to recollect her data, thought by Zion to be Mauser secretly operating against the Machines.

E Pluribus Neo - EPN was created initially as a counter to the formation of the Cypherites. Founded by Neo's most devoted follower, a young teenager that most people simply call, "Kid," and his friend, Shimada. Michael Popper and Shimada lead their operatives from outside of Zion and their Command structure, performing guerrilla warfare against their opponents.

Kid (b. 1987(ish)) - Michael Karl Popper was awakened by Neo as a high school student. He is a unique operative, in that he became self-aware of the Matrix and freed himself by committing suicide (jumping from the high school roof escaping from Agents). He is therefore much younger than most operatives within the Matrix, which is why many of them refer to him as simply "Kid." Some of his followers prefer to call him "The Kid," a sign of respect or lack of understanding of the title. Despite being one of the youngest operatives, his self-substantiation allows him a great deal more power than typical Operatives. He was recently scarred in a mission, which has drastically matured his appearance.


Shimada - A friend of Michael since his awakening, and a co-founder of EPN. She was killed when Veil pulled and severed her jack.

Machines - The Machines represent all of the programs within the Matrix, and indeed the Matrix itself. Their city, 01, is heavily defended, and they control much of the surface world. They supposedly draw their energy from beings plugged into the Matrix, although by the sheer amount of power required to run the Machines, the number of known people still plugged into the Matrix isn't nearly enough, as discovered by the Merovingian.

The Architect - The supreme creator of the Matrix, and most likely its current Operating System program, the Architect is responsible for the creation of every program, routine, code byte, what have you, in the Matrix. He knows all, sees all, hears all, and feels all within the Matrix. He has been known to make public visits when the Matrix is stressed, as a sign of his more concentrated efforts to stabilize it. Cold, heartless, and only ever thinking of the next direct consequence and all of its variables.

Agent Gray - When the Matrix was purged of the Smith Virus, the Agents that were infected were forced to remain inside during the reset. Their code was quite literally turned inside out, decompiled, and recompiled, to ensure that absolutely no trace of Smith remained in any of them. Agent Gray was one of those Agents. Because of the levels of infection he had become exposed to, he was denied access to return to the Source, as many Agents do during Matrix resets. Because of his somewhat banishment, he could technically be classified as an Exile. However, he still works for the Machines with a zealot-like perseverance. He was delegated to become the Mission Controller for human recruits, and, due to his extensive experience with dealing with humans, he is somewhat weathered by their touches. One could even say that he is proud that he connects with humans more than any other standard Agent.

Agent Pace (p. pah*shay)  - A prototype for the new female Agent, Pace was purposefully coded to be visually appealing to human operatives, and speaks with a warm Italian accent to further gain their trust. When the Merovingian was testing kill codes to use on the Oracle, he chose Agent Pace as a target, damaging her programming. Because of this, she isn't quite as open and trusting as she used to be, and adopts a more standard Agent-like approach to situations. Agent Pace is by no means a standard Agent, however, because of her beauty and accent. Other female Agents have since been created, with a more homely appearance and default accent.

Agent Skinner - A standard Agent that met often with Machinist operatives and assisted them in their operations. Agent Skinner was deleted by a specialized virus the Assassin had coded into some of his bullets.

Agent Griffin - A standard Agent that sometimes leads teams of Operatives on certain missions.

Cypherites - The Cypherites are human operatives that regret their awakening from the Matrix and strive to be placed back into it. After it was revealed that it was technically impossible for Cypherites to accomplish this fact, they then redirected their focus to the elimination of threats to the Matrix. They fight using extensive guerrilla tactics, including sabotage of the Hoverbarges used to train newly awakened humans.

Cryptos - Cryptos was once a strong Zion supporter who advocated finding a way to nuke the Matrix. After a lengthy disappearance, he returned as a street magician that preached allegiance to the Machines was the only way. It was eventually discovered that he had been reprogrammed by the Agents, when a code-modified Seraph attacked and destroyed the program. Its extended level of influence on his mind was not entirely broken, however, and the Zionite and Program in him merged to form a highly unstable leader of the Cypherites.

Veil - Toorima was a Zion operative that suddenly killed one of her own crew and was thrown in a Zionite prison, until Cypherites broke her out. She returned to the Matrix as Veil, a silver-skinned operative with a sadistic, yet childish, style of leadership. Being an insane woman with a penchant for chaos and mayhem, she delights in the kill and pouts at a lost battle. As Mission Controller for the Cypherites, she often sends them on haphazard, yet ingenious missions that, if the entire team isn't brutally massacred, make a sizable impact on the intended target. She temporarily leadership of the Cypherites when Cryptos was impaired by Seraph's attack, but was quickly put in her place at his return.

Merovingian - The Merovingian controls the largest Exile empire in the Matrix, exerting his influence over many programs that cease to perform their functions. Greedy, power hungry, and driven by a nasty temper, he often sends his own operatives to their deaths to further his own goals. He is mostly concerned with maintaining power over the city, his biggest rivals being the family of Mr. Black and Mrs. White. When he isn't driven to obsession over an act of anger, he is seen as a cold and brilliant tactical genius who simply strives to know as much as can be learned.

The Merovingian - The Merovingian has a strong French accent, a strong army at his disposal, and a strong desire to learn. His chief philosophy in the Matrix is Causal Determinism. It is rumored that he was a former Operating System for the Matrix.

Persephone - The Merovingian's wife, a former birth control program overseeing reproduction within the Matrix. She goes out of her way to antagonize her husband. She has her own agenda, her own goals and missions, and her own followers. She always keeps a close bodyguard of the sex demons of the Matrix, the Succubi.

Flood - The Mission Controller for the Merovingian's operatives. Once a subroutine to a larger program, he was deemed unnecessary and was scheduled for deletion. Bitter at his predetermined fate, he fled to the Matrix, where he strove to make a name for himself. Unfortunately, the Merovingian found him and forced him into service. As the Controller for the operatives, he is extremely condescending, treating his operatives like they are incompent. Flood's behavior is predictable - when he is sarcastic and insulting, he is either bored or complimenting the operative. When he actually congratulates the operative, he is showing distinct elation over the operative's progress. When he slurs or otherwise is acting drunk (usually speaking only a sentence at a time), he is disgruntled by the operative's performance, is actually drunk, is demonstrating disappointment, or is a combination of the three.

Malphas - The leader of the vampire-like Exiles in the Merovingian's army, and his chief intelligence officer. Avoids the sunlight as much as possible.

Ookami - The leader of the werewolf-like Exiles in the Merovingian's army, and his former top choice for brute force tactics. The introduction of Beirn has drastically reduced her role to little more than a simple lieutenant in his army. Beautiful, yet deadly. She was once considered as a replacement for Flood during a period of time in which he had an extremely low success rate in his mission controlling.

Beirn - A former Merovingian operative that joined forces with Anome. He directly ingested one of Anome's altered code-modified vials, making him stronger than even an Agent. His hovercraft and crew were destroyed by the Machines, but his body in the Matrix continues to live. His unnatural obsession with Persephone has made him an obedient servant to her after the fall of Anome. He has been known to take on several of the best Agents that the Machines can throw at him and still come out on top. His simple intelligence and super-powered abilities makes him an ideal choice as the simple brute force pick of the Merovingian.

The Trainman - An eccentric, dirty man who oversees the transport of Exiled programs in and out of the Matrix. After being forced to bring in the ultra-powerful Exile known only as the Assassin, he refused to work for the Merovingian until some time later, when he was talked into bringing in the Apothecary, and again to escort the General out of the Matrix. He was mortally wounded in the chaos ensuing the General's slow escape, and has not been seen since he fled into a different train construct. It is assumed he has died from his wounds.

The Effectuator - A just as eccentric Exile, he sports graying hair, but sandals and a Hawaiian shirt/shorts combo. With the amazing ability to create specialized constructs for the Merovingian, and able to instantly teleport anywhere within the Matrix, and able to split himself into multiple Effectuators, rendering him nearly uncatchable and undeletable, the Effectuator exists outside of the Merovingian's ranks.

The Twins - A pair of Exiles with no pigment and dressed entirely in white. They mimic the myth of ghosts, with the ability to phase through solid material. Blasted into pieces and into orbit by Morpheus, they were eventually re-instated via code modifiers.

Commandos - When the Truce was created, the Sentinel army that was about to destroy Zion was called away. The commanding program in charge of the Sentinels, however, wanted to keep on the attack, and was quickly turned away. Disgruntled, the program and his sentinels fled the Machines and made a base within an old fortresses code-named "Stalingrad." There, the program created residual images for himself and his sentinels, and the army established themselves in the Matrix to stress the Truce. After the General's defeat, they were merged into the Merovingian's army.

General David Beatts - The program that governed the sentinel army. Responsible for many incidents (Faux Agents, Unlimit, attempted Oracle assassination) and an attempted assault within the Matrix, kidnapping the Oracle's ward, Sati, and performing many holding maneuvers against the Machines He eventually went to the Merovingian to evade the Machines, who in turn betrayed him and forced him into his service.

The Colonel - A high ranking commando that worked directly under the General. He relied on bombs connected to pod clusters in the Real to prevent attacks on himself, but they were eventually defused and he deleted.

Commandos - Sentinel programs within the Matrix. As much as they depended on numbers in the Real, they depended on numbers within the Matrix. While utterly efficient with military maneuvers, they lacked any strong fighting skills. They currently reside in the Real and, under the control of the Merovingian, scout the Real world for information that the Merovingian can use.

Elite Commandos - Sentinel programs within the Matrix, specially coded to be much more efficient at fighting. They used special anti-detection suits that required great, power-draining scans from the Machines to bypass. They are currently locked away in the Merovingian's constructs, with the exceptions of  a few escapees.

The Oligarchy - Men with a surprisingly similar power to Neo's - that is, to manipulate programs as they choose. Humans with no apparent bodies, most have survived on living inside android hosts.

Halborn - A large, white-wireframed figure explained by his code's incompatibility with the Matrix and a blunt, short temper goes with this man. Supposedly near death or already dead in the Real, Halborn ventured into the Matrix in search of a "biological interface" program, of which only a handful were created by the Oracle. He makes no attempt at hiding the fact that he's merely using all the organizations around him as means to get what he wants. As time went on and his goals went unrealized, Halborn's anger grew to an angry climax of deleting the Oracle and attacking Carlyne directly on numerous occasions. Some time after the Oracle's termination, Carlyne managed to run a hack to remove Halborn's access to the Matrix.

Carlyne - A second wireframed being Carlyne appeared suddenly in the Matrix, and quickly took it upon himself to spill much of the secrets Halborn had been hiding from the public as the two battle across the city. After he booted Halborn from the Matrix, he disappeared briefly, to return at the news of the Merovingian's having found the program Halborn was searching for. Upon directly confronting the Merovingian, he was suddenly rendered incapcitated by the returning Danielle Wright. Two new Oligarchs informed operatives that they had terminated him after he lost his android body host to Wright.

Helian - A red-hued, humanoid non-wireframed Oligarch, appeared within the Matrix to hunt down the BIP.

Tesarova - A pink-hued Oligarch working with Helian.


Other

Morpheus - A former Zion Captain, but without a crew. Morpheus struggled to adapt to the life of peace in the Matrix after Neo and Trinity's death, and eventually settled on demanding that Neo's remains be returned to Zion. For his past actions against the Merovingian, he was assassinated. His death is still denied to this day by followers and historical analysts.

Agent Smith - A former Agent of the System, Smith harbored a grudge against being forced to hunt down human rebels. Parts of his coding were corrupted by an encounter with Neo, giving him the ability to create copies of himself by overwriting any other shells within the Matrix, with each copy gaining the abilities that the former host had. Eventually, his powers caused him to overwrite nearly every being within the Matrix, requiring Neo himself to fight and defeat him by tricking him into overwriting the man plugged directly into the Source. Since his and Neo's death, small, weak portions of his code have periodically attempted to reassert dominance, to be beaten back or abused by other operatives.

The Assassin
- A super powerful Exile that was brought into the Matrix by the Merovingian to terminate Morpheus, The Assassin started losing touch with "reality" and eventually attempted to destroy the Matrix itself, and indeed came very close. An interesting note about the Assassin: he was made completely out of flies, and required specialized insecticide-like kill codes to kill him. One fly managed to escape deletion and has since regenerated into a full blown Fly Virus localized in Bathary Row, that, if left unchecked, could one day grow into a new Assassin.

The Apothecary - A program that used to work for the Merovingian, but retired to live in 01, under the condition that she not use her frighteningly competent ability to terminate any program or redpill with a mere thought. She was forced out of retirement by Persephone to fashion a kill code for the Oracle, but was deleted by the Merovingian after she was done. Some operatives speculate that Flood had a crush on the Apothecary due to his actions during her visit and after her death.

The Oracle - A complex program that can see the future, explaining her ability in that she understands the choices others have made and thus can see their results. Simultaneously viewed as an idol for humans and machines alike, she was a force that could sway opinions with a single prediction. She was terminated by Halborn after refusing to give him a program he sought, shortly after distributing mysterious pieces of code to E Pluribus Neo and the Cypherites. Recently, some strange acting women approached EPN officers and giving them information suggesting knowledge of the Oracle's well-being, and if she is in fact still alive and hiding under the guise of a new shell.

Sati - A young, purposeless program that was adopted by the Oracle. She has the unique ability to alter the code of the Sun in the Matrix, slightly increasing the productivity of the humans plugged into it.

Seraph - A former Seraphim and lackey to the Merovingian, Seraph is now a bodyguard to the Oracle and Sati. Once, in a battle against commandos that were kidnapping Sati, he fell into a river that had just been polluted by the deletion of the cheat-modifiers that Agents had won from the death of Anome, giving him the unique power to see hidden programs inside humans, and the ability to see Elite Commandos when others could not. This power eventually faded.

The KeyMaker - The Exile that created keys that could open any lock, killed by the Smith Virus. In the destruction of the building that held the entrance to the Source, a singular key survived. This key was used by an Elite Commando under the orders of the General in an assassination attempt on the Oracle.

The Boxmaker - The Keymaker's brother. Upset with his deletion, the Boxmaker has been creating portals to the Merovingian's prison construct in the form of heavy, small boxes that release powerful Exiles into the Matrix. Has yet to make an appearance in the Matrix Online.

The Seraphim - Old programs from a past version of the Matrix, they are closely modeled to current Agents, except their suits are white, and they wield a pair of giant wings on their backs.

Scanline - A hovercraft crew dedicated to "exposing the lies and evening the playing field."

The Joker - An extremely old Exile that had collected and merged various deleted programs into its own primary programming, becoming more and more unstable the more programs it added.

Morpheus Simulacrum - A simulacrum created by the General in an attempt to convince Zion to wage war against the Machines. After a while, the sim became self-aware and rejected its own creator, besting him in a short battle and vanishing into the workings of the Matrix. The sim has the strange power to reconstruct itself, and is currently exploring its own inner workings. Despite having a strong sense of self-doubt, the sim undoubtedly has a very strong Morpheus-like behavior around it, and yet it remains neutral to the war.

Neo - A human fated to destroy Zion and ensure the Matrix's safety, via a complicated design of the Machines and the Oracle. Neo successfully brokered a Truce between Man and Machine, on the terms that he could purge the Smith Virus from the Matrix. The shattered remains of his RSI are currently on display in a small fight club in Gracy Heights.

Sarah Edmontons - A human plugged into the Matrix that slipped into a coma some time ago. Some years ago, she vanished from the hospital she was supposedly comatose in. There has been much speculation that she is the new "One" via her anagramed name.

Peter Foree - A man who was good friends with Sarah's brother, who died tragically as a witness to a show of Unlimit power. He was much watched upon.

Rachel Dunkirk - A friend of Sarah who was recently awakened.

Danielle Wright - A former Zion operative that seperated herself from her allegiances to live within the Matrix as the leader of the Wright Research corporation. Responsible for such technologies as the current redpill trace program and the Emergency Jack-Out Procedures. She was supposedly eliminated by the Machines after she released a new redpill to replace the obsolete program during the war. Shortly after the Merovingian located the BIP, however, she returned by stealing Carlyne's shell, hell-bent on retrieving the program for herself, and killing anyone that  got in her way. She was finally defeated by operatives in a rooftop battle where the BIP killed her mid-battle.

The Biological Interface Program - A program coded by the Oracle for use in remotely controlling distant machinations (including human motor functions) with the mind. Hidden away in the Oligarch matrix front, the Ouroboros company, until retrieved by the Merovingian and subsequently released, where it avoided contact until it appeared in humanoid form to kill Danielle Wright. After making contact with Ghost, the program was confirmed to be a manifestation of the late Trinity, Neo's lover who died during his last adventure.


Player Operatives - Operatives, like yourself, that received special mention in missions that you may run yourself by buying training tickets from your local Archivist.

Illyria1 - A loyal and dedicated Machinist of the Recursion Instance. Credited for tracking down the Exile, Darago.

Tbone - An operative that had been placed on the Assassin's hit list. (unconfirmed)

Sundog - An operative that had been placed on the Assassin's hit list. (unconfirmed)

Silenci0 - A Cypherite instrumental in yielding information about Unlimit. (unconfirmed) He also prepared and detonated an explosive in the Zion Command Center during the siege on the old city.


Dezreki - The former Field Commander for E Pluribus Neo on the Recursion Instance, Dezreki was first credited for bribing The Bag Lady to reveal information crucial to the Merovingian. He later was exiled from EPN and went to the Merovingian under the mistaken belief that he would also become the Frenchman's Field Commander. He was credited again for attempting to preserve the Joker. Dezreki was killed in the line of action.

Broin - With his Zionite faction, the Furious Angels, the Zionite was critical in cracking the Joker's four-tier code.

Conrac - Employed excessively complicated mathematical procedures to locate the Joker's data nodes.

Bayamos - Credited for helping others learn more about the Joker. Also noted as continuing to monitor trace code residue of the Joker.

Archangel - An E Pluribus Neo operative. Originally named Yahweh. Credited for translating the entire third tier of the Joker's four-tier code.

Othinn - Credited for exceptional skill in tracking the Joker and  his final lines of defense against deletion.

Sieges - A Merovingian operative on the Recursion instance, known as a carrier of two identities. Credited for killing Silver the Exile.

Procurator - Second-in-command of the Glitch Society and a staunch Machinist operative of the Syntax instance. He programmed what came to be known as the 'Procurator Virus', which granted the Machines temporary control over Commando access points and allowed them to determine the physical location of Stalingrad, the General's base in the Real. A modified version of the virus was later used to find the base's network address and interrupt the General's hologram transmissions.

Steele - The EPN captain that succesfully escorted Commander Lock to a waiting Zion ship.

RedBindi - The captain of the Zion ship that brought Commander Lock to New Zion.

I don't think I can fit him in. I had to split up the post as it was, and from what I remember reading about, Skinner's only real role was as the guy who was everywhere Gray was, and the Agent that got pwnt by the Assassin.

Agent Skinner was the finest Agent this Simulation ever had maintained. He commonly was seen within the simulations giving meetings to Machine operatives as well as attending combat simulations between factions. During the N30 Agent Event, Agent Skinner led machine operatives to numerous advancements to take out the overwhelming clone army. As well, he took part in PvP battles that included Agent_01,02,03,04 and 05. He died in the line of duty defending the simulation against the Exile Program known as the Assassin. Coldly he has been forgotten when in view of the sucessor Agent Gray and his Bonnie, Agent Pace.

I will always remember my time in Rebirth of Eden on Heuristic, when we (the faction) challenged the server (anyone) to Royal Rumble in the Vault Club. No one showed up. Yet Agent Skinner was there to see the best Machine faction on the server stand tall and proud.

Systemic Anomaly

It was built out of fear of the possibility of sudden Machine aggression.
There was never actually any proof that The Machines would have attacked Zion while the truce was in effect.

Yes, I do believe that was the gist of what I wrote. I lit the Commandos org as purple because technically it doesn't exist anymore, having been merged into the Merovingian's. The General is purple because his interaction within the Matrix itself has been severely reduced, but I think I'll change that. The Colonel is purple because he's obviously dead. =p

Well, my guide will always have some bias, but in this case, I believe, from the information I received from events and general information provided by others, that Commander Lock(e) had always assumed the Truce wasn't going to last and prepared the new city in preparation for its inevitable breaking. I just substituted "Lock" with "Zion." If I'm wrong, I'd like to proven so, so that I may correct my error and not confuse people.


List of past and current liaisons to be put up soon, with (hopefully) back stories on each. I might actually need the liaisons' help on that part.

But no, I'd dare not make a list of recognizable players, because it might become biased towards Recursion. I would also say that I might not know all the people that would go on the list, but hell, if they're overly recognizable, even I'd know who they were!
