Are we to say that we can never hope to advance medically if we are not going to be able to test processes on animals or should we just skip that step and just test directly on humans?

Thats what lifers should be used for.

I like this idea.

Super String theory is based off that 10/11 dimensional structure, yes.

Time travel is folding through the 5th dimention in that model. Paradox-free time travel involves folding through the 6th or higher dimension.

Quick explanation of 10 dimensional structure (It's not quite accurate but a very good illustrative explanation)...

Interesting little vidoe you got there, I remember covering most of it in Geometry class but good none the less. Like how they incoperated the book flatlanders. And how they describe the 10th dimension of being a single point. Though a point, and a line, are actually impossible to draw dimension wise, since a point doesn't have length width or hieght it wouldn't be visable, and since a line only contains one of the three it is also not visable. It needs atleast two dimensions to be of true dimensional standards. With out length there can be no width or height, with out width there can be on length or height, but with out height there can still be length and width as long as both are present.
The main reason it's not quite right is because it simplifies the concept of branes and tightly wound dimentions into a set-theory hierarchical design.

A few things that should help anyone grasp some of these concepts are COSMOS by the awesome Carl Sagan and PBS's the Elegant Universe (presented by Brian Greene).

The actual reality of this sort of dimensional theory has way weirder concepts to grasp than Douglas Adams' and Terry Pratchett's best bollocks combined.

My favorite is that each successive dimension is at right angles to the preceding one.
1d is up-down
draw a line at right angles (90 degrees) to that to get 2d : up-down & left right
draw a line at right angles (90 degrees) to the preceding two to get 3d : up-down, left right & forward back
now the brain hurts when you try to imagine an angle of 90 degrees to all of those because we can only really easily think in terms of 3 dimensions. (it turns out it's time. 2D slices put together make a 3D object, 3D slices put together make a 4D object. I.e. a 4D object is a 3D object that exists over a period of time.)

Some of the two videos reinforced my understanding of Sliders and what they were doing, from the 6th dimension on, it's way over my head

I was looking into the "end of the world" claims and came to the conclusion that today is not the world-ending stuff. I am under the impression that they will only be testing the beam circulation on the 10th. The actual particle collisions won't occur until October 21st. And the way I understand what everyone's saying, it's the particle collisions that have the potential for strange and cataclysmic events.

Can anybody confirm or deny that this is correct?

So...the world won't end in 6 days?
Ah, I see somebody already brought this up.

Glad they tested it tho. Or further more did a pre-empted test. Seems a report shows the pre-phase warm up for the main test run showed a few things loose. Not sure if it was a few screws or whatnot. But hey, did they not say there was a 1 out of 100 million chance. Or as much of a chance in winning the lottery for something to go wrong? That one chance still exists. And seeing it is about something going wrong in those chances. It showed itself beforehand.

Still that lottery chance example doesnt seem to understanding. Seeing how this whole thing was man made for a purpose. Not spitting out numbers on white plastic sphreres. Which the purpose of those is to just get lucky.

Oh well; if the event ever does occur when some scientific device wipes mankind. Make sure your sleeping. Best to feel no pain in the split second it all happens. And would be more peaceful.
Humanity is its own worse enemy. ^_^

Ahhh... no more bills, taxes, rent, and I'd finally get a vacation... come on black hole!!
Seconded. Bring it on black hole!
In the words of the dude from FFVII in Coral walking around:

"You see that Meteor up there? Gonna come crashing down right? Well, it better hurry the %@%& up so I can kick it's damned %@#!"

Bring it black hole, lemme kick you in the rear end before you disentigrate me!

In other words, I lol'd

I'll get these guys to help:

Yeah but 1 in a million chances happen 9 out of ten times! Lol. Yeah I've read up on this (Pure sciency stuff interests me even though most of the time I have no idea what it's all about) and they will be increasing the power and particle mass over the next few years or something like that. I just titled the thread as a lighthearted jibe at those who have claimed that 10th Sep marks the end of the world. Plus its a nice attention grabber! SMILEY

Last night/early this morning was the celebratory "Pajama Party" at Fermilab for the LHC's first beam. Beyond the surreality of being the only multiple-pierced/tattooed designer in a sea pajama-clad physicists and clients, it was a very cool atmosphere. Plus, no black hole.

Ah well, those who were worried about it being turned on are now saying that it'll be several weeks/months before they actually smash any protons, even then it may take a while for a cataclysmic world ending event to happen. I just think they're disappointed. Even so I read that some guy in Australia has been using facebook or something to organise an end of the world party in Sydney. Aussies, any excuse for a drink!

ROFL
unless... it's soo powerful it destroyed the future, and we just haven't reached the future yet... and when we do reach the future, we'll all just get discombobulated, and some guy will just shout out "told ya so"
