It seems that there are a lot of mixed opinions about SWG - a lot of people claiming that the game has been ruined by SOE etc etc, however I still hear of a lot of players leaving MxO to go play it... so i'm curious as to what the deal really is - how does it compare to MxO, is it worth playing, is it as bad as people say etc etc

MxO is my very first MMORPG - I bought it as an 'impulse purchase' while buying the 10-disc boxset, as a Matrix fan, not a PC Gamer.  Prior to this game, I was a pure console-hog, and had only ever played Champ Manager on PC.

However since playing MxO i've realised that in all the years of not bothering with these sorts of games, I have really been missing out, and am looking to try out a few more games.

So, i'm not the sort of person who is likely to be bothered by a few little downfalls that get on experienced MMO players' nerves - however if the game completely sucks in all ways, then of course I don't want to waste my hard-earned money on it...

So... SWG.... is it really any good?

i've been playing mxo since march and just started playing swg a few days.  my opinion so far is that i really enjoy it.  i don't even like logging into mxo anymore to be honest.  none of the chagnes to swg really affect me since i have no idea what it was like before.  i would recommend it, especially if you're bored with mxo like i was.

hey im a  swg player new to mxo SMILEY i can probly offer some good insight SMILEY

First of all there no point  in comparing the two games i  play both for the pure reason that there different storys and games .

There are similaritites in mxo such as the commands and  emotes thats as far as it goes.

Swg will take you more time to progres in than mxo does.

Money is a more important  thing  in swg as there is a ful on ecconomy with player crafters and citys and guilds ( the  equivilant of a fction or crew ).

There are over 80 different proffesions form ground based to space based and  crafting proffesions.

So mxo and swg are far apart and  i suggest that if you are intrigued get your self a station acess acount  and get a copy of swg and take a look for your self SMILEY

hope i was of some help.

I played SWG for a long time. SWG has more features and more content.

Grouping is much more important. For example: As a Master Pilot you can fly multiplayer ships where you need 5 people to have combat with it. 1 pilot for control and cannons. 1 co-pilot for missles and specials. 2 for the two turrets ( like the ones you can see in the ship of Han Solo in the movies ) and 1 who run around in the ship and repair damaged components... You can fly it alone, but then you are a pretty nice big target for enemies.  If you aren´t a master to fly such a ship... join someone else and control the turrets.... i love it.  And you can run around inside the ship and decorate it with furniture, pictures, loots, trophys and more...

I beta tested MxO and I play SWG (bought MxO today) and I say, that unless you want to grind 24/7 (and waste 30 minutes+ and when I say + I mean +) that you shouldn't get this game. SWG is not a game you can pick up and start where you left off and with MxO you can. In MxO you can solos so grouping isn't a problem and if you are in SWG... YOU CANNOT SOLO. SWG is fun, but it seems if you want to play long-term you need to go Jedi. I played SWG pre-cu and my 2 year annaversary will be in November, so I've seen Pre-CU, Pre-village, Pre-30:1 conversion rates, Pre-vehicles.... practically everything in the game. I have to say to not go to SWG if you like MxO, it'll ruin your experience... after I beta tested and I came back I was having fun but SWG is limited to grinding (you cannot go into every building) and nothing more. Quests are hard to do alone and some like the Hero of Tatooine make you GUESS where the guy is going to spawn on the whole planet. Lagging is horrible on most planets and the loading times are horrible. I say if you like to grind, then get it, but think about it when I tell you that you need to be in a group to get xp and to be successful because you cannot solo or else you get so little experience and it is really tough. I like SWG but I've decided to try MxO again and with SOE in charge now, they don't care because they still get the money SMILEY
Again, get SWG if you like grinding, but don't get it for anything more... you might be disappointed... RP has really declined in that game, so it offers little else to do, and quests are only as fun as they last.

Thought I would chime in here since I am in the same boat...

MxO is my first MMORPG, came from FPS...I have to say that I love it
and am not sure I'll ever go back to FPS...That being said, when I
found out about the Sony transition and the access pass I went out and
bought SWG.

Let me just say that with a job and family I only get maybe a few hours
a day to play and so climbing up the levels in MxO has been slow going,
but fun.

So for a weekend I played only SWG and I have to say it did not hold my
attention. Granted I only went the first few levels but it really
sucked getting killed by a desert rat...lol. So after those first few
days I went back to MxO and have yet to jump back in to SWG.

I know that I need to give it more time, but I don't have much time to
play so I want to dedicate it to MxO. On the other hand it your out of
school for the summer and have nothing better to do then game for 15
straight hoours you probably have time for MxO and SWG...

A bunch of us have guilds on Tempest.  Illumiati, VN, Some of the AWR people, Legion, and there's a couple other I can't think of.

I have heard nothing but bad things about SWG, and it really cheeses me
that people cant wait for a live event or w/e and are running out and
buying SWG of all games...If they where getting WOW it might be
diffrent, but SWG...MXO is 15 times better then SWG....

Thanks for all the feedback - I guess its something that I will have to try out myself... in terms of grinding, thats pretty much the bulk of MxO too, however I did prefer soloing through MxO so hearing thats a tough option in SWG doesn't inspire my confidence in the games ability to hold my attention...

And I don't consider myself to be one of those people who are unable to wait for Live Events - i've filled my time as level 50 by helping out in my faction, planning and running faction Live Events, helping to run and DJ on an in-game radio station, organising parties and roleplaying etc, i've always been positive and confident about this game, however I still think its going to take a lot more time for things to pick up again.

Over the last couple of weeks a lot of people I knew and was friends with have left the game, pretty much every facet of day-to-day gaming has dwindled, and its getting difficult to find a reason to continue playing.

All i'm looking for is something to fill the gaps while we wait for things to improve... I do have a lot of spare time on my hands right now, and would rather share my time between 2 games than waste all my time in a game where there is next to nothing to do besides bang your head against the wall in frustration.

(Plus i'm really not into fantasy RPGs with trolls and wizards etc, so SWG is the next best thing to MxO from what I can see...)

As said before in the thread, the 2 games are hard to compare, but some things you might be able to compare:

  • In SWG switching templates is much harder than in MxO, you have to regrind every template

  • More professions/disciplines in SWG

  • Hard for me to say as I'm too new to MxO, but from what I've heard, SWG has more high-end content than MxO. Not much compared to other games maybe, but more than MxO it seems...

  • Less client side lag in SWG. Even with the lowest settings in MxO with 512 RAM I sometimes start lagging with every step while walking. Mara C post-merge was a little... FPS unfriendly. SMILEY

  • Majority of lag in SWG is server side... But most servers are good generally, it's mostly large scale PvP that lags.

  • If you are a Star Wars fan, you probably would enjoy SWG a lot, even if it isn't totally canon and such...

  • Grouping is the best way to grind in SWG, the first few levels can be soloed, but at some points soloing will be pretty hard

  • People say quests, dungeons etc. are so hard solo, but with the right templates and tactics they are very possible to solo SMILEY

There are probably more things, just don't spring to mind atm. SMILEY I play SWG more than MxO and enjoy it alot. MxO is nice too, just haven't been able to convince any of my mates to buy it and play with me. SMILEY

Oh and as some people tend to say here that "SWG is the worst game ever" and "SWG sucks!". Well, on the SWG boards they say the same about MxO. SMILEY Other people's opinions are not yours, only by trying can you find out if you truly like it or not...

i've played mxo since its launch in march and i'm finding SWG a refreshing change so i would recommend it to anyone that's simply out of things to do in mxo.  every time i log in to SWG and i find myself saying, "i wish they would put something like this in mxo."  mxo just has little to no content right now; the only thing that kept me around for so long were my friends and faction mates.

SWG is a decend game... i don't even like star wars very much and i have been playing it off and on for over 2 years. it;s not a hurry up and level style of game like everquest, ffxi, or wow, there is alot more to it than that...

the first few months of the game were rough and nothing worked right. the game has come along way. But there are still some very serious issues hidden deep within the game that most new players won't pick up on untell it's too late.  One is balance issues currently in the game....  they nerf things and leave the old overpowered items in the game without adding somthing to make up for it.. the most recent example would be overpowered lightsabers that new jedi can't get. which makes pvp imbalanced and pointless for jedi vs jedi, and for jedi vs non jedi.

countless times over the past months the devs have taken alot of things out of the game that people spent countless hours to get/craft. they don't treat the old players very well and often end up screwing us over one way or another. There are still lots of bugs in the game... bugs that have been around for months/years. and new ones added with every patch.

they have pissed alot of people off doing these things and by not fixing MAJOR issues before the were added to the game. credit exploites, abilities not working right or at all, mission not working right or at all, items not working right or at all, the list goes on and on, and more often than not they end up causeing other problems.

After you max out your skills there really isn't much to do other than try to improve on you chosen profession, do boring quests that are basically the same thing over and over, take this here, kill that, the usual. you can also craft and harvest stuff if you chose crafting, or start working on a new profession.

the only people who make it very far in that game are thoes willing to take advantage of the countless bugs in the game to get what they want. it has been 2 years and this continues... this isn't the kind of game i want to be involved with anymore.

personaly i think mxos combat is alot more involving, challenging, and looks better than swgs... the terrain in mxo is alot better then swg. there are huge elevation changes in mxo as well as swg, but swgs terrain seems stail and flat compaired to Mxo. swgs crafting systems is better than mxos but it's also very tedious.

if there was one thing that i wish mxo had that swg does... it's the in game houses for storage, a place to meet up with friend, or just to decorate with the countless items in the game.
