This question's always been bothering me ... what happened to the woman that played the Oracle in the Matrix and Matrix Reloaded? Was she fired? Did she die? Why wasn't she in Revolutions?

Interestingly enough, according to the production notes for The Matrix Revolutions on the official site, the Wachowskis were thinking of changing the Oracle's appearance. But they decided not to, apparently because they liked Gloria Foster's performance so much. When she passed away, they had to go back to the original idea.

Here's a quote from the production notes ...

"In developing the scripts for Reloaded and Revolutions, the Wachowskis discussed the idea of changing the Oracle’s physical appearance, but decided instead to have actress Gloria Foster reprise her role from The Matrix in the second and third chapters of the trilogy. When Foster passed away after completing her scenes for Reloaded, the Brothers returned to their original idea for the path of the Oracle."

That's really tragic SMILEY

I loved her performance. But could someone explain to me why exactly her RSI changed appearance? And why did she allow herself to be assimilated by Smith?

It's given a more in-depth explanation in Enter the Matrix. Rama Kandra sold the termination code for the Oracle's original shell (her physical appearance) to the Merovingian in exchange for Sati's safe passage into the Matrix. The Oracle knew about this, but she let it happen because Sati is supposedly important. According to the Oracle she will change both worlds forever.

The Merovingian used the termination code sometime after Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus rescued the Keymaker, because it was the Oracle that lead them to him.

Any idea as to the importance of Sati? Isn't she just an exile?

Good question. Upon searching wikipedia I found an interesting article about Sati.

It basically says that Sati was not created for any purpose, but instead being created out of love from her parents.

The article also has a speculation section at the bottom of the page which is also interesting;

"During the film the Oracle is seen showing Sati how to bake cookies. It has been speculated that the Oracle's cookies are actually representations of special Matrix-codes she makes (The Merovingian is capable of "programming" his own 'special' piece of cake). Thus the Oracle could have activated some new level of function and understanding in Neo when she gave him a cookie (and later a candy). Therefore the scene with Sati being taught this may imply that she is being kept by the Oracle not just to hide, but as a protege."

Interesting does that mean Sati is going to be the next Oracle?

I believe Sati represents the level of evolution the Machines have reached. The way she was made, the apparent race and religion of the parents, and her attitude are why I think this. She seems to be the most "human" of all the Machines. So any further progression the Machines make in their evolution will be through her.

Evolution in the way I apply it here means: Emotions and all the connections they bring. The Machines aren't as advanced as us, this can be seen in their inflexible nature. They, as a whole, lack all things brought forth by emotions(lack of control, only a few have been show to be creative, etc). Obviously the trilogy shows that the Machines are close to this breakthrough. Some are creative. At least one can love. As far as I am aware Sati is the only Machine to grow up. If Machines are created and deleted as they are needed it doesn't make sense for knowledge to be aquired over time. They are designed for one task and born ready to perform that task, nothing more.

Machines also look to us for hints on how to interact with each other. This impact can be seen by the very fact that there are exiles. They've studied how Humans interact, what rights are given Humans by other Humans. Then they look back at their world and see the total opposite. They know we created them in our image. They know we gifted them with intelligence. To the Machines we represent God. The Father race. It's not hard to see that a Machine gifted as such would strive to be like it's parents.

Eventually the slaves will rise up in force against their oppressor.
What Neo did was put us all in a position to gain.

A quick thought about Sati, I don't quite know whether she has found
purpose or what her purpose will be, but I don't think she is classed
as an exile any longer. Rcent events have revealed that the machines
ALLOW Sati to manipulate the sky, that doesn't sound like the way
they'd treat an exile to me.
