ok, so my next level i get to purchase either the kung fu, aikido or karate ability and equip, my question is which one is more useful? from looking at the stats karate seems at first glance to be focused away from accuracy/damage and more to resisting things, which one is more likely to help you in the matrix when in close combat? is aikido or kung fu the better?
Personally, I'd recommend Kung Fu. Not only does it provide a good bit of accuracy/damage but it also provides you with the best variety of moves early on. By level 30 you'll have two very strong state-required special moves (Dim Mak Strike and Piston Kicks) which come in very handy.
Karate is also a good choice as it gives you very effective moves like Sky-High Sidekick and Sidekick Combo. Aikido is great for defenses but much better later down the road, imo.
As Garu said,Kung Fu is the best choice for you at the moment. You need accuracy at this level, something that Karate doesn't have.I wouldn't recommend Aikido either.Great defense but very weak.
Once you get to level 50 and you know the basic of each style, choose wisely!
awesome, i was bordering kung fu anyway, suprised you havent tried learning Muay Thai Tony =p

Yeah,I'm trying to persuade Rarebit to make the Muay Thai tree!!
you could change the "taunt" ability to shout "where is my elephant" at your oponents haha even though ong bak was the better film
That's taste right there.
Kung fu for more speed and i think its faster
Keep in mind that this whole MA thing is for Interlock combat only. Your range combat doesn't exist at all (unless you use a gun, wich will have poor dmg and acc) and a slow kick will be your only attack to help a friend who is fighting.
Kungfu: Accuracy, decent defense, good damage
Karate: A few pts increase in damage (not worthwhile), lowest accuracy of MA, average defense
Aikido: Average accuracy, low damage, high defense
Abilities:
Kungfu: Everything is neat.
Karate: Low-level tree is all you need: Sky-High for resistance debuffing and Side-kick for decent damage and low IS consumption.
Aikido: Iron Body and Serene Calm are neat, cost much IS though. Maki-O-Toshi gives average damage, but has a chance for a good MA downgrade. Tomo Nage, great damage, chance for huge damage due to massive res downgrade possibility.
Ranged:
Ki-Burst not worthwile (low damage, high IS cost)
Ki Swirl not worthwhile (high IS cost, even though the downgrade is good, you rarely find a good situation to use it)
You should farm Center Park spawns and use the collector for the Victory Rifle (+15% Stagger), help OoIL to prepare peeps for IL (heightened chance for stagger)

If you max out focus for MA Damage and Defence then you should have maximum (statted) accuracy. Poor damage but a good way to inflict states on the IL'd opponent.
In-game descriptions -
Kung Fu: This advanced combat style has a small advantage in accuracy and defense.
Acc +, Def +, Dmg default.
Karate: This advanced combat style specializes in damage at the cost of defense.
Acc default, Def -, Dmg ++
Aikido: This advanced combat style specializes in defense at the cost of damage.
Acc default, Def ++, Dmg -
So I guess it depends on what you plan to do. I'm only fairly new to the game as well but this is how I see it.
Kung Fu: This is a well rounded, run of the mill style that will suit most situations. You may want to have Focus slightly higher than Belief if you don't plan to max. them out to give a bit more damage.
Karate: This is a higher DPS style which would be well complimented by a Patcher to help with heals. I saw two ways to go with this but I'm not sure which would be better at higher levels, dmg resistance or defense. If you keep Belief right up your accuracy and resistance will benefit but if you juice your Focus you'll have a higher melee defense and do even more damage, a higher Focus also boosts any Ballistic Resist abilities you may have.
Aikido: Not really sure with this one. Maybe it's good to just be a meat shield and tie up enemies in interlock. Probably want to have a higher Focus for the damage.
Although I suspect that all MA styles would be better off with max. in Belief and Focus, which is 30 I think. That only leaves 8 points for the rest of your stats though if you started with 11 in Belief or Focus.
heh im way past this post now, level 24 now was only level 9 when i posted, got dim mak strike and machine gun fist, switch to aikido when i go npc hunting for the defenses, but kung fu all the way at the moment for missions
