This has probably been discussed here a number of times but I wanted to see what everyone thought.

I believe that even after being freed from the pods they were still in the Matrix.  The supposed real was actually no more then another construct.  I believe this because the Architect told Neo that until the humans believed they had a choice the Matrix didn't work.  He didn't say they were offered a choice just that they believed they had one.  This would explain why Neo was able to control the sentinals outside the ship and how Smith was able to get into the RL.

So if this is the truth then aren't we all still in our pods?

Discuss, flame...whatever.  Just thought it would be interesting to see yalls thoughts.

Interesting thought. That would mean the machines were in control the whole time and probably took zion so seriously to make them believe they were free. If this is true how can humans ever be free or are they doomed to be in the matrix forever.

The Real World is exactly the apocalypse that humanity is destine to create. There are proofs given to justify the 'RL' tricks. The trick is not the real world itself, that's the joke.

The Sentinel thing aside, this really doesn't cry for any theories. First he takes over Bane's RSI in the Matrix, therefore makes himself a part of his. Then he takes the telephone handset and the operator uploads Bane's RSI together with Smith, now an attribute of his program, into Bane's "brain" -- although we're talking about a computer implant inside of his brain, of course, where the RSI and everything else is saved.

That's how Smith has got into the Real.

No, no, no.

This theory falls apart very quickly if you listen to the Architect's speech: the Machines cannot create a perfect simulation; people will always wake up. If life in the simulation is forced upon them, they wake up even faster, so the only way to stay in control is to give them a choice, even if it's a subconscious choice.

By this logic, there would inevitably be at least one person who would wake up from the "Real" world into the real real world. Especially since all people awakened into the Real are then forced into accepting it (Neo himself tried to refuse to believe it but he couldn't), this should in fact force even more people into awakening from the Real, which never happened.

This theory was only a temporary idea created by people who wanted to understand the ending of Reloaded before Revolutions was released. Now that Revolutions has been released, we know that Neo gained a connection with the Source and used it to scramble the Sentinels as they approached. It's the same thing he used on the Tow Bombs launched by the Armada. He only had control over the Machines. If he had had control over a supposed simulated Real, I think his fight against the Bane/Smith would've been a lot more graceful, but since he was fighting an Exile in a human's body using nothing but his own Real body, he didn't have the same strength that he had in the Matrix or against the Machines.

Stack, you hit the nail on the head.  I feel that all the answers were given in the movies (although not necessarily as detailed as we would like).  The MWAM (matrix within a matrix) theory seemed like a logical conclusion at the end of Reloaded, but since an alternative explanation was given in Revolutions, we have no reason to believe MWAM is true (not to mention it is impossible to prove).

The matrix with in a matrix. No one can really be sure but the info w have says differently. With agents in the matrix it makes sense that they would have the same power in the real. Why arent there agents that pop up in Zion and destroy all the Zionists. The machines wouldnt like to see batteries knowing the matrix exists thats why they are released through the Redpills. MXO PoV the machines do not want Blues to be taken out because it would cause a lot of power problems.
