Novalux has been on the forefront of our battle from the beginning, working as our liaison officer. His history in the Matrix goes back even further than that, though, and he felt that those of you he hasn't been able to meet yet might like to know his past, so he gave me this to send to you. He is a worthy officer, and any time you take to get to know him will be well worth your while. - Shimada

Good evening,

Those with Neo in their hearts will know who I am. I go by the name Novalux; a name chosen with meaning and of my own volition. Shimada suggested that I should open up a little more, so that our people can get to know me a little better. I suppose she's right, so here's my story.

It is not a special story. It is a story similar, probably, to most of yours. I won't waste your time with trivial details. They bore me, and I'm sure they bore you.
My name before I was unplugged is inconsequential. My life before I was unplugged is unimportant.
What matters is that I was unplugged. I was granted the freedom I had been seeking all my life.

Oh, I should tell you that this all happened sometime before the truce. Some may say that I am a relic of an old time, however I'm one of the few of us left that know what it was like before. I know it even better than some of them.

In those days we didn't have the soft, PR-trained Agents that you all take for granted. We had the full-on, hunt-you-down-and-put-a-bullet-in-your-head Agents.

Anyway, I served aboard the Vigilent for some time. That's where I met my wife.
Her name was Rosalyn, and I loved her.

Again, I won't bore you with the details. You've all been in love. If you haven't, then you are missing out on one of the greatest things which seperates us from the Machines, and no manner of description will convey that to you.

I think it was... about the time when Morpheus started spreading the word that he had found another potential One, Rosalyn and I were running a mission. It was real standard fare - searching for blues to unplug.
The old Machine networks were even less guarded than they are now. So we practically walked in the front door, got into the networks, and left.

I... forgot a disk in the computer room... so I told Rose to hold on for a second... I got the disk, but...
when I came back out...

Rosalyn was on the ground...

She was dead...

And there was an Agent standing over her.

So I ran. What else could I have done? That's what I tell myself now. But not then. Then, I felt the weight of her death rested completely on my own shoulders. The whole experience nearly killed me inside.
I couldn't do it anymore. Everything reminded me of her - the ship, the Matrix... I felt the dream - the hope for a new world, where humanity is free - leak from my body.
The Captain granted my leave request and I returned to Zion.

Until a few months ago, I stayed in Zion working for Commander Lock. He knew my thoughts on Morpheus and The One and so I was never promoted to anything but a records keeper.

Then something happened. I overheard some of our younger soldiers talking - about Neo, about his dream, about the state of things in the Matrix. After hearing Shimada and The Kid (he hates it when I call him that though) speak, I felt the old spark. The dream came flowing back. I knew I had to be a part of this and I could not cower in Zion any longer. After talking with them I learned more about what would later become E Pluribus Neo. My time in Zion Command strengthened the skills I would need to help our splinter organization make it, though not being in the Matrix for so long seems to have hindered my abilities in that world. Apparently freeing your mind is not like riding a bike.

So that is where I am today - a liaison for E Pluribus Neo.

I now have meaning for my existence and I live for Rosalyn, for Neo, for you, for humanity, and to do my part to bring a new light to this dark, dark world.

For every shining angel there must be a demon, that darkens the world so much as the angel brightens it. You a brave man Novalux though one that believes in something that i do not. You seem as if a child, one that see's the world as a great and glorious place, without realizing the darkness that it contains.

The Light that you wish to bring to this dark world, is a light that I cannot stand, and that glares and burns the eyes.
