Yes, because why take the time to use this to an actual strategic value, no, let us waste the entire operation on humor. Good job.

His holographic projections are not what he uses to direct his commandos' operations; they are solely a means of communicating remotely with the organizations opposing him.  In and of itself, being able to redirect and misuse his hologram has little strategic value other than providing yet another stepping stone to hack his networks.

But please, since you seem to know tactics better than Agent Gray, let's hear what you would have done.

Really? Keep up with the times, its what he's using to communicate with his troops and the mervs also, unless you didnt happen to notice that Hologram that was repeating its last message to his men prior to our breaking in of their hideout?

What would I have done? I would have made a realistic use of it and set up the mervs for a fall, and not by our hands, but by Zions, in a way that would have made them look betrayed, then -tada- their alliance of circumstance would have ended. But no, really, the laugh was worth more then actually doing something helpfull.

what's more effective, a cliched "the machines will crush you" speech or making the general look like a boob in front of everyone including his own troops by forcing him to come out with pointedly satrical and vaguely absurd nonsense?

Neither, see above.

It's only "neither" if the game mechanics (and the way live events play out in general) allow the players the level of freedom to influence the direction of the story (and what would effectively be quite a major plot point, if they went with your "set up for a fall" idea) to any great degree.

In reality, all of the upcoming "major plot points" have likely already been set in stone and we're rolling through the motions of this particular conflict. to try and integrate something like that into the story would possibly be vaguely complicated, and also sort of pointless - it would hardly be a "big reveal" for anyone playing (or generate any sort of dramatic tension) as we'd all be fully aware the general was being duped after reading about it on the live event forum and various other places. Maybe what you suggested would be more feasible in the days of Monolith - in fact, it would probably have gone down a storm - but in the current setup, it was only ever going to be limited to "say some stuff that makes the general look stupid in front of whoever". so with that in mind, I think making him look stupid via the humour route as opposed some sort of "machines rock ftw" speech (that I'm guessing will have been suggested somewhere down the line) is a much better alternative - to me, anyway.

[[Meh, never claimed to be a great speller SMILEY, however now your bringing game mechanics into what was quite an IC responce, so I dont consider that a valid arguement.]

fair enough, however i never post "in character", i simply post and play the game as myself - i would hope this doesn't invalidate all of my points here, especially as a lot of the time its hard to tell if someone is posting "in character" or not. with that being the case, i'm not going to refrain from offering my thoughts on something merely because i couldn't tell if the person i was replying to happened to be playing a character at the time. also, the current game mechanics and limited dev resources are likely the most direct reason for why they couldn't roll with your idea in the first place so i'd have to disagree with it being invalid in any case, in character or not SMILEY

The Machines had their reasons for this.  Do you think they want to pull the Mervs away from the General?  Beatts is going down whether the Frenchman supports him or not; this is just a great way to get him incriminated in the process so that attacks against exiles can step up, especially from Zion.

Wow I'm actually agreeing with NightTrace on something. Really what was the point of this? Making the General look like a fool to the people that already consider him one? Guess will just see outcome but I think Gray's lacking in the efficiency area these days.

Don't try to find any hidden reasons whatsoever. This was simply a way to demonstrate to the General that another of his communication channels is under our control.
