I was laughing long after that scene and people next to me were looking at me in frustration. I just smiled back psychotically.
Alright, so I absolutely LOVED this movie.Best parts of movie - Wanna see a magic trick? and when hes walking out of the hospital.. F'in hilariousSaddest part - when rachel dies Overall... GREAT movie!
It was a perfect Batman movie: The super dark tone. The detective work. The gadgets. Batman flying (literally) through windows and slamming right into criminals. The fight sequences were better. They even had the cowl in the last sequence with the white/pupil-less eyes, right from the comic (and a cool explanation for that, too). The Nolans truly do "get" the things that are the hallmark of Batman. The beginning was a direct flow from Begins, with the Scarecrow still in play, the old bat suit being used. It was also quite cool how they very deliberately explained how and why Batman needed the newer iteration of the bat suit for this film. The Batmobile self-destructing also leaves the door open for a new iteration of the vehicle in the 3rd film. There's really no words that can qualify Ledger's Joker. Completely unpredictable and terrifying. I had read previously on AICN that this was one of the great "villain performances" on film (along with Hannibal Lecter, etc.), and I had thought that was overkill. After seeing TDK for the first time tonight, honestly I don't find that to be an exaggeration. The film held back absolutely nothing (which was perfect) in portraying how sick he is. When he makes a "joke", he's the only one laughing. Everyone else is collateral damage to the punch line.As a Chicagoan seeing the film and all the locations downtown was particularly cool. People could be heard in the audience around me throughout pointing out the various locations/street names. In any event, next Saturday night is a second viewing on IMAX at Navy Pier. Can't get here fast enough.
That was an excellent movie. Perhaps perfect. Probably the best movie I will see for a good, long time.
I bought Harvey's change, I bought Bruce's crusade, and my God, the Joker... This movie actually made me sad that Heath Ledger was dead, because we will never see him play the Joker again. I think most of it just came down to the ticks he had - the lip-licking/gum chewing noise he always made, the constant telling of the scar stories, the absolute chaos and madness. It was absolutely perfect.
It did leave the question about the next movie, though. With Harvey dead and Heath err... dead, we've lost two of the real stars of the movie, which is really, really sad. New villains that I could sort of see working are Catwoman and the Penguin, with the possibility of the Riddler, if his character were modified to meet the gritty new precedent of the movie series. I'd be really disappointed to see any of the superpowered villains (or heroes, even, with the talk in this thread of a Batman v. Superman thing) because it would spoil the reality of it all. It'd be like putting pew pew lazhurs in the Matrix (oh wait?). So I'd be rather disappointed if we saw a Freeze or Ivy anywhere down the line. With a good enough actress, I suppose a good Harley could carry out the Joker arc, but I just don't think it'd be the same.
Honestly, I half-expected them to have a SWAT team member or one of the cops with family in the hospital to blow the Joker's head off in the end, if for nothing else than to write him out due to Ledger's death.
This movie was epic.Heath Ledger set a whole new bar for the epic madman with his portrayal of the Joker in this film. One of the first things I said to my girlfriend after walking out of the theater was "he was better than Jack"
