I was laughing long after that scene and people next to me were looking at me in frustration. I just smiled back psychotically.

The whole audience cheered when Gordon turned out to be alive and put that gun up to his head.
I was one of them. If I'm not a Joker fan, I'm a Gordon fan.
I'm going to go see it a second time, and maybe a third! I want to buy the DVD right now! God d**n it why isn't the DVD out yet?!

It was a perfect Batman movie: The super dark tone. The detective work. The gadgets. Batman flying (literally) through windows and slamming right into criminals. The fight sequences were better. They even had the cowl in the last sequence with the white/pupil-less eyes, right from the comic (and a cool explanation for that, too). The Nolans truly do "get" the things that are the hallmark of Batman.
The beginning was a direct flow from Begins, with the Scarecrow still in play, the old bat suit being used. It was also quite cool how they very deliberately explained how and why Batman needed the newer iteration of the bat suit for this film. The Batmobile self-destructing also leaves the door open for a new iteration of the vehicle in the 3rd film.
There's really no words that can qualify Ledger's Joker. Completely unpredictable and terrifying. I had read previously on AICN that this was one of the great "villain performances" on film (along with Hannibal Lecter, etc.), and I had thought that was overkill. After seeing TDK for the first time tonight, honestly I don't find that to be an exaggeration. The film held back absolutely nothing (which was perfect) in portraying how sick he is. When he makes a "joke", he's the only one laughing. Everyone else is collateral damage to the punch line.
As a Chicagoan seeing the film and all the locations downtown was particularly cool. People could be heard in the audience around me throughout pointing out the various locations/street names. In any event, next Saturday night is a second viewing on IMAX at Navy Pier. Can't get here fast enough.

With how dark this movie was, I don't see how a third film could feature the Riddler. All that "riddle me this" crap would seem completely out of whack after we have a film in which 2 main characters die, and have a guy get his forehead impaled on pencil, another gets his face sliced open, and yet another gets a bomb sewn into his chest. The Riddler to me has always been one of the campier villains.
Bane, on the other hand, done right....he can match Batman in wits and physically. In the Knightfall comic arc he freed all of the inmates of Arkham, and let Batman wear himself down rounding them all up individually for months. All the while, observing his moves and thought process. Finally he confronted the exhausted Batman, beat the living crap out of him, and broke his back. In this Nolan universe, we could have Batman coming back from that, defeating Bane, and gaining the public's favor once again. Which, at the end of this film, his public/law enforcement standing is officially now in the toilet.
Catwoman could be cool. I think there was a line in there from Lucius, after Batman asked if the new armor could stop a dog bite, where he said "no, but maybe a cat". Perhaps a foreshadow. The thought of someone like Scarlett Johansson in leather with a whip is an agreeable one, too.

That was an excellent movie. Perhaps perfect. Probably the best movie I will see for a good, long time. I bought Harvey's change, I bought Bruce's crusade, and my God, the Joker... This movie actually made me sad that Heath Ledger was dead, because we will never see him play the Joker again. I think most of it just came down to the ticks he had - the lip-licking/gum chewing noise he always made, the constant telling of the scar stories, the absolute chaos and madness. It was absolutely perfect. It did leave the question about the next movie, though. With Harvey dead and Heath err... dead, we've lost two of the real stars of the movie, which is really, really sad. New villains that I could sort of see working are Catwoman and the Penguin, with the possibility of the Riddler, if his character were modified to meet the gritty new precedent of the movie series. I'd be really disappointed to see any of the superpowered villains (or heroes, even, with the talk in this thread of a Batman v. Superman thing) because it would spoil the reality of it all. It'd be like putting pew pew lazhurs in the Matrix (oh wait?). So I'd be rather disappointed if we saw a Freeze or Ivy anywhere down the line. With a good enough actress, I suppose a good Harley could carry out the Joker arc, but I just don't think it'd be the same. Honestly, I half-expected them to have a SWAT team member or one of the cops with family in the hospital to blow the Joker's head off in the end, if for nothing else than to write him out due to Ledger's death.

im looking at possible story lines as well and been browsing through and with the end events at Dark knight it sounds like they may do a story on year two http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman:_Year_Two but just kinda tie in as well introducing the reaper

Went to the midnight showing, was absolutely amazing. This is one of those movies like Matrix: Revolutions and LOTR ROTK that I'll most likely be seeing 3 or 4 times in theaters.

This movie was epic.
Heath Ledger set a whole new bar for the epic madman with his portrayal of the Joker in this film. One of the first things I said to my girlfriend after walking out of the theater was "he was better than Jack" (I don't say it lightly either, I grew up with Burton's Batman and Jack as the Joker, who did an exquisite job for my taste as well). He really did a phenomonal job with the role, everything from the major moments, to the one-on-ones, to the tiny subtleties. Something I could easily see myself going back a few times to watch again (and I haven't done that in years). The whole cast did a great job and they kept the pace moving along on a 'fast, but not too fast' rhythm that kept you engaged, aware, and allowed you to enjoy all the facets of the film.
Easily one of the best films I've seen in the past few years.
EDIT: Oh and the previews were quite epic as well, new Terminator + The Watchmen (*drool*)
