I thought they moved their Hovercraft to get the best broadcast signal they could at the time. Location in the real shouldn't affect location in the simulation. Hence Neo meeting Seraph in Int (presumably) and going through the white halls to Debir court without the hovercraft having to move.
As for the skyline, the simulation itself is meant to imitate an American city sure enough but that doesn't necessarily mean that the simulation or Zion is located on/under American soil.
Zero One was in Saudi Arabia I think and if that was the city Neo and Trinity went to in Revolutions, then I'm guessing Zion wasn't too far from it.
Yep, there's that bit in "The Animatrix: Second Rennaissance" where a workman is cleaning the brass map outside the UN building and a fly lands on the map in the middle of Saudia Arabia, whereupon the workman smooshes the fly: shivery little bit of understated symbolism there.
I'm guessing Zion is somewhere within a hovercraft flight of a few hours from Zero-One, so... perhaps it's under Jerusalem. Would make sense, since Zion is the biblical name for the hill it's built on, and that name is also used in the Bible as an alternate name for Jerusalem.

It makes sense that the fields would be fairly close to 01, and the tunnels leading down to Zion started there. I was thinking Iraq cause I remember at some point they referenced 01 being built in the "cradle of human civilization" which I took to mean Mesopotamia./as
Hovercraft can't move with people jacked in anyway, at least not in the movies. I remember a line from Morpheus after having set the Neb down, along the lines of "repatch the main AC to the hard drives and stand by to broadcast." I gathered from that that a hovercraft can either broadcast, or travel, but doesn't have enough power to do both at the same time.Hover-BARGES on the other hand may be different altogether. But even so I wouldn't expect they'd move around too much while people are jacked in .. what would happen to those people if the signal was dropped, even for a few moments? Wouldn't they just fall down dead?/as
Just to fix a minor miss assumption. Zero One is not the Machine City.
In the commentary given by the director of The Second Renaissance he says that 01 was destroyed by the nuclear bombing. The Machine city could be located in the same area but the name is unknown as the only canonl reference we have been given is "The Machine City".
