Hi.
I was wondering if there is an exact number of critical missions for
the contatcs, tyndall, flood etc before you start getting missions to
choose from. I cant seem to find this online.

I don't think you'll find he's asking about story based criticals. If I read the OP's post correctly he's talking about the introductory and seduction missions. The ones that all redpills have to do before choosing an organization.
The introductory missions are as folllows:
Welcome to the Matrix
Exile Extermination
The Internuncio*
Network Tampering
Computer Crackdown
The Potential
Transcendence
Meet Niobe
* I'm not 100% sure if the name is correct for that mission.
Once you complete "Meet Niobe" you'll be offered the seduction missions. There are about 5 or 6 of those that start with "The End of the Beginning" the rest of the missions differ depending on the organization of your choice but all end in the same mission "Stolen Artifact" (again, not 100% sure on that mission title)
Once you have finished those you should have about 6 rep points with the organization of your choice. At this point, you will start to be offered the storyline based critical missions. These are awarded depending on you reputation points, and will be interspersed with "Meet...." missions - these are reputation and location based missions.
To ensure you get access to all the storyline critical missions, you will need 50 reputation points. There are only 5 such critical missions which are changed once a month or so.

Thankyou both. I am level 18 but have just left the critcal missions up
to now because they always tooke me into the restricted areas where the
gangs are about level 19.however I have just done a bunch of them and i
was wondering when they were gonna end so I can do some standard ones
to get levelling up as Im still getting shot at left right and centre
as i move around in some of those neigborhoods.
as it happens my mission now is the stolen artifact so it seems i am almost there!
thanks for the other tip

From levels 10 to 25, you will have to do all missions in Westview.

Yes, that is the last mission before getting the standards. When I start a new character I always run these criticals on easy, this way they not only get finished before level 7 (and Westview) but it makes you some nice info to help leveling up later. Once the standard missions are offered, run them on medium or hard depending on how well you think you'll do. Only run them on easy if you need the info.
You can also keep declining missions until one shows up near you. It takes ages for lower level characters to get missions within 300 meters, but the nearer to level 25 you get, the more likely you are of getting a close mission. With my level 22 character, I haven't entered Westview since level 15 and I solo all my missions on that character.

These rules are all well and good, its too bad MXO doesnt follow them.
I've only gotten the "Stolen Artifact" mission every time I mission for
Zion...for the last month and a half. Hell, even the local contact
missions are always the same mission. Consider yourself lucky if your
missions do indeed rotate!
