I see it this way:

As long as enough people are subbed to keep this game afloat, it's not going anywhere.

So it really will come down to us.  While the lack of an updated story, the absolute death of LE's, and lack of additional content will be rough, there will be many who have no intent to leave until the servers are shut down.

I'd like a rocket launcher that shoots rockets powered by sarcasam and exploding with loathing so I can shoot down Darm's mech.  I'd make sure not to hurt you though, dude.

Maybe I should also get some kind of big inflatable mat for you to land on.

Seriously though, I really like this the idea, but I have to agree with Darm's not-so-subtle point that this might be a tall order.

Use some Fen-magic and see what you can do, Fen.

At this point, even with Rare leaving, that isn't going to make them change their minds suddenly and decide to merge the servers.

While they certainly read these threads (as they've proven) and while they'll take our opinions into account, the bottom line is that if they decide to merge the servers, they'll do it.  If the decide not to, then they'll leave things as they are.

Everything that happens isn't a reason to merge / not to merge.  It is what it is.

I hate to be the one to break this to you, but that's exactly part of the "entitlement" she was referring to.

Sure, you've played this game for a lot longer, but guess what...  it doesn't matter.  No one cares.  It doesn't change anything.  Regardless of the roads that led us here, this is where we are now.  So tout your beta caps proudly and spend your fifteen dollars each month to complain about the game and let me know where that gets you.

Let me ask you this.  What is the point of telling the community, "You'll get nothing and like it, so Stop Whining, Jerks!"

Hm, I've reread her initial post three times, and I think the issue here is that you're reading something entirely different.  I didn't see anything at all to the tune of that.

What I saw was her asking people to stop playing the victim and start playing the game.

Then in your posts, what I saw was a defensive lashing out without ever truly addressing one point she made.

A lot of what's suggested by the join date thing is perspective.

if you weren't here in 2005, you don't know just how huge, popular, and filled with live content with static content in constant development this game was. Hell, you could just go to Mara C on some random day and the Assassin might be there. Niobe might call you up out of the blue. That's how things started. Amazing.

(This isn't directed at you, Neoteny, but you provided the vehicle for a point I'm trying to make.)

See and this is the point that really really needs to be made.

Us noobs weren't here when it all started, but that's all we ever hear about.  I can't be in this game for five minutes without someone somewhere comparing how awful it is now compared to how awesome it was back then.  The thing is, you're totally invalidating my experience here and now.

This is kind of like when a band makes it big after years of being unknown, and all the people who have been fans for years get all high and mighty because "We knew them when they were small and underground."  There's no prize for that.  All that it means is that you enjoyed it for a longer period of time, but it doesn't mean that I should derive no enjoyment from the same thing.

I understand what this game once was and how awesome it was, because I've talked to a lot of vets about it.  Who am I?  I've been here for a year, and I've got a 50 and another nearly-50.  I enjoy the hell out of this game.  Would I have enjoyed it more "back in the day?"  Undoubtedly.

I understand where Kreis is coming from because our experience as newer players has been compeltely invalidated.  You all keep pointing out on what we missed back in the day, but I feel like you are all missing out on what we still have here.  You cling to this memory of what once was, and many of you (I've totally fallen into this pit a couple of times over the last few months myself) hold that memory in such high regard, that you have a hard time facing the facts that it will never be that again.

From my understanding, she's not trying to start a riot, she's not trying to tell you to quit, she's not namecalling, but she is telling you to realize that it could definitely be worse.

...How?

[...]

You think things could be worse?  I would like to know how.  If your answer is going to be "They could shut down the game," my next question would be "How would that be any worse?"  At least then we'd have a definitive action from the Powers That Be.  At least then, they'd acknowledge our friggin' presence, if only to give us one last kick to the groin.

I'll concede that having a definitive answer would be more comforting than floating along in space aimlessly.  When you're dealing with a business, that's just not information you'll ever be privvy to.  If a company was going to can one product line at the launch of another (or just can it without any kind of replacement) in say two months, that company isn't going to fly that flag, because that's two months where that product will lose money.

I'm just saying that we're not going to know well beforehand.  Honestly, we'll be lucky if we know a day beforehand.  Having said that, I think that SOE will keep this game afloat for a while longer.  The costs of keeping this game in its current catatonic state cannot be all that high, and they have more to lose by shutting it down than they have to gain.

I miss the daily live events.  I definitely miss "new" (recycled?) content as well.  However, I've found myself a few groups of people that I enjoy playing the game with, regardless of the fact that we lost that.  Yeah, I know how sad that sounds.
I do still want more.  I want random interactions with event characters.  I want that feeling of IC cross-organizational hatred with a compelling reason behind it other than "OMG you're a Mech!."  Those days have passed though.  Maybe I'm foolish for it, but I am content to hang out with the friends I've made and RP with them.  There are a surprising number of newbies (at least I'm sure as hell surprised), and I like helping them out and showing them some of the things that this game still has to offer.

So to get to your question, how could it be worse?  It's a matter of perspective, I guess, and I'll give you that.  I certainly have a lot of things left to do in this game at 50 than you have already done.  (Hell, I've only ever run the first 2 PB's...)  And you've proven your point that to those who are at the end of their ropes with this game, a shutdown might not be worse than our current stagnation.  My biggiest issue with this whole mess, and the reason that I'm still talking in this thread, is that a lot of vets see fit to look down on me for still enjoying myself.  That's where my biggest point of contention lies.  So maybe it can't be worse for you, but a shut down would definitely be worse for me.

I'll rephrase.  "It could be worse (for some of us)."

Also, Phrack, I appreciate your enthusiasm.  Even in all your bitterness and anger at what's happened to this game, you still stood up and made an attempt at something to try and revive this game.  You deserve kudos for RPA, and hopefully it will at the very least gain a draw of old timers and newbies to the game.  My concern is that some of the people who are so outspoken against this game and the people who still enjoy it (and I'm not pointing my finger at you) are also potentailly scaring those people away.

The sad thing is, all it would take is just a simple bit of occasional communication on the part of Walrus or whomever.  Even if there is no news, I rather hear an occasional courtesy post to that effect.  Public Relations 101.

I disagree with the value of a total wall of silence, to me that's much, much worse and even more insulting and detrimental.

I just meant that if SOE was going to pull the plug, they're not going to talk about it, and they're not going to let Walrus or anyone talk about it very far ahead of the action if at all.

I don't like the wall of silence either, and I am by no means saying that we shouldn't ask for updates.  I just think that a lot of people go about it the wrong way.  For instance by saying, "I'm a paying customer, and I demand to know if this game will be shut down or not."  (and to be clear, I don't know if you've ever done this or not, so I'm not necessarily talking to you here.)  That is akin to getting pulled over and telling a cop that your taxes pay his salary.

To be honest, I'm impatiently waiting for some kind of update about something.  Still, I'm not going to let that fact interfere with my experience, because I want to enjoy what I've got while I've got it.

Screw this, you guys are all going down."  Neo wins.

Or something like that.

Me, I figure the Machines took advantage of Zion's blind focusing on the Intruders.  While the Machines had thier redpill operatives playing along and keeping Zion distracted, they went and upgraded their systems so that they could run a reboot.  This also explains the complete lack of reaction to a few Zionites and EPN running a major codebombing campaign.  They send out a massive force to strike on all active hovercrafts (what, like the Mechs wouldn't be building more Sentinels than ever before during wartime?) and have "suicide bombers" with EMP's of their own.  Maybe the sentinels chuck it like they did the long range explosives or something, only it's EMP bombs.

They force a hard reboot in such a way as to leave the blues alive, but it instantly kills any operatives jacked in.  Meanwhile, Ol' Mervy finds a way to save him and his own (at least those he finds crucial to his organization)

With most of the human redpills dead, and even the ones that are alive completely inable to jack in, they feel safe to restart the cycle of the one.  They have a fairly large army to handle any stragglers, and they begin rebuilding Zion.

It's rough, but it's generally what I see.

Procurator wrote:

This Trinity stuff is pretty compelling, but here's an alternative possibility for you (as if we weren't all confused enough as it is ):

Let's say Neo had the BIP, given by the Oracle whenever. I'm certain he was the only person to officially get it by the Oracle's design (she crafted it, she made the moves to break the Cycle - the Architect and the Machines had nothing to do with it). After he died (?) the Machines began experimenting with Trinity using that device the Assassin saw. But rather than taking the BIP out of her in that process, as has been suggested here, they were putting it in. Now inhabiting Trinity - alive or dead, certainly she wasn't recycled - the BIP has access to her memories.

But let's go further. Let's say the Machines hand Trinity over to the Oligarchs. At that point the BIP is in their possession, which goes some way to explaining why it was discovered in their network in the Matrix.

Why do I believe this? Because the BIP is quoting Trinity from both before and after the emergence of Neo's powers. If it were transferred into Neo during their first kiss it wouldn't have been able to say 'it's beautiful' (from their moment above the clouds) and such.

What I do want to emphasise is that the Machinesas a whole did not do anything to break the Cycle - that was all the Oracle's work. And it's been heavily implied that the BIP was entirely her design as well; they didn't contract her to make it. Furthermore, all the emphasis on Neo implies it was unique to him, that the BIP had no role in any previous iteration.

Okay, I see the direction you're going and I think I see what you're hung up on. It's just too convenient for the BIP to have controlled everyone's actions, and I have a hard time living with that idea as well. I mean, *censored*, wasn't anything left to chance? Or choice?

But here are some holes in your theory:

  1. Why would the Machines put the BIP into Trinity after Neo? I see no gain there for the Machines.
  2. Perhaps it isn't Trinity's memory the BIP is quoting from when it says "It's Beautiful." Maybe that was a Neo memory.
  3. The Machines did do something to break the cycle, though. They agreed to it. They allowed the Oracle to make the changes she deemed necessary. Hell, if I'm correct, the Architect would have even known about it when he talked to Neo.

The Oracle gave the BIP to Trinity. Probably embedded in her cookie. Trinity gives the BIP to Neo the first time she kisses him; a program executed by a prerequisite command. It brings him back to life and enables his One powers. Neo accidentally copies the BIP into Smith. The power corrupts Smith completely and causes what was a little psychosis to become a full blown obsession. Unbeknownst to the Machines when they agreed to this BIP idea, Smith is the unintended consequence that plays into the Oracle's plan for breaking the cycle.

Wait. There's a problem with my theory now. When Smith absorbs Neo, allowing for both copies of the BIP to fall into the hands of the Machines, why didn't they just keep them? How and why would one of the BIP's pass back to Trinity?

*censored*, this just keeps getting more confusing.

One thing...

Trinity first kissed Neo in the real.  You're saying the program transferred from her to him during a kiss in the real?

That seems pretty thin to me.

For better or for worse, it's obvious that Trinity somehow came into posession of the BIP.  Perhaps the machines dropped the BIP in her head to see what kind of information they could dig out.  Afterall, if she was dead (or mostly dead), they weren't going to be able to ask nicely and get it that way.  Drop the BIP in, then they can grab information from her brain.  Why would they do this?  I'm not totally sure.  Maybe the machines are fascinated by the fact that Neo chose Trinity over humanity when he was given the choice.  Maybe they wanted to see what was so special about her.  Now, if they have Neo and Trinity's body, perhaps they are trying to understand where they went wrong.  So far off?  I don't think so.

The One was the One, Trinity was Trinity -- I highly doubt any transferrence took place with the BIP.
