Desert of the Real SOE Discussion Brad Wilcox's Responses to TheUnknownShadow Re:Brad Wilcox's Responses to TheUnknownShadow PS10N 0 11/20/2007 15:37
Even a minimalist would agree that a Test Server and an intern are the least we need and the most we can hope for.
If nothing else, now more people at SOE are aware of what we're missing.

Still waiting to hear if the "big buddy list = major memory hog + major launcher lag" bug has been fixed.  Can you close the Launcher once the game starts, to free up all the memory it hogs when you have a huge Buddy List?
Desert of the Real SOE Discussion STATION LAUNCHER Re:STATION LAUNCHER PS10N 0 11/19/2007 00:37
Switches people, switches.  Proc is right.  The Station Launcher calls the MxO launcher and when it does, it uses the switches which tell MxO to bypass the loading area and any previous /jackout location and start at the last used hardline.  I have ten icons in a quick launch bar, one uses a manual log-in and character selection and sends me to the Loading Area or a previous /jackout location.  The others specify an RSI and auto-log the account and RSI and place it at the last used Hardline for that RSI.  Since the /jackout command and a manual log-in are often used to re-enter areas which would take a long time to get to, like the bottom of a Hideout, this issue will have to be resolved before the Station Launcher is released.  Otherwise, there will be a revolt of people who still expect to start in the Loading Area or last /jackout location.

Although I am very much looking forward to the ease of free trials for all SOE MMOs and very much looking forward to chatting out-of-game with everyone in-and-out of game, I will wait to adopt this until I am forced to.  Why?  Because I have 1650 people on my Friends' list and I sincerely hope I don't have to wait up to an hour or more for the lists to load every time I want to play MxO!  They need to fix this before the official release.  If they try that "you'll have to thin out your list" approach there will be big trouble.  SOE: If you want to play, you'll have to ditch your friends.  Not going to happen.

There are over 1650 names on my MxO Friends list.  From what I read, the Launcher loads the list every time and takes more time for a longer list.  If the Launcher stores all that in memory, there will be trouble.  Is it possible to close the new Station Launcher once the game itself has been launched?

Are the Headless all missing from Mars Industrial Storage on Recursion again?  A Trial player hit level 5 and was plowing his way down in to the Hideout.  I was waiting for his "*CENSORED*?! Headless?!" reaction but it never came because none ever showed their.... faces.

Any hope for the new barely-even-there Signal Booster Dish animation getting a (very) few small trailing code symbols?  Just a little added sparkley so it can be noticed?
Development Discussion Update Discussion Update 55 Discussion Re:Update 55 Discussion PS10N 0 10/10/2007 01:37
  Animation feedback:

The signal Booster Dish animation seems to have been toned down too much.  It's completely transparent at the extremes and still very translucent even at the middle.  While the old one was too loud and obnoxious, especially when there were a lot of Portable Signal Booster Dishes around, the new one isn't noticeable enough.  I suggest adding a few green code symbols trailing from the rings, along the lines of the "loot me" animation on dead NPCs, though less bright and fewer code symbols with shorter streams.  There is a tendency to over compensate when toning something down, effectively nerfing it altogether.

Stuff I'm going to regret typing:

I can feel the waves of hate coming my way already, but I'm going to say this anyway... there is no such thing as Blue Buffing.  If a buffer buffs someone who is flagged, the buffer becomes flagged as well.  If he's buffing someone who isn't flagged, then it isn't a PvP situation.  Even if the buffie flags up when the buffer is done, the "fix" would mean forcing both buffer and buffie to flag any and every time any buff is applied.  If that's what you want, go to Vector.  Now to make things worse for myself...

The combat system used to have some horrible bugs which would allow an attack to succeed even if the attacked character was already dead.  This resulted in all sorts of other bugs, including being stated and/or flagged while dead.  The last of the bugs from this are only now being fixed.  Under the old system, res would not work on someone in another org who was flagged.  The system would report "Target is not a dead friend."  The way things are now, someone of any org can be resed by someone of any org.  Unless the resser knows the target, this can result in bringing back someone from another org. Sure, you can target the dead person and use variables or /who to find out their faction (if they have one) but if the player or faction isn't known, it's still a matter of guesswork whether it will be a friend or foe being brought back to life.  This is what makes res balanced as it is.  Since the corrected system rightly removes all flags and states at death, there is no game mechanic which would make "Red Ressing" possible.  Whether it was  incidental or deliberate, "Blue Ressing" is by design and that's the way it should be.
I'm very pleased that the game mechanics support my position because the alternative is tantamount to removing res altogether.  Even a [technically impossible under the current system] dialog along the lines of "Reviving this RSI will allow other players to attack you as hostile.  Proceed?" would be a farce, as it would effectively remove Doctors from PvP altogether, which seems to be aim of those who complain that Doctors actually have one useful ability. Consider the following situation.  Loaded as Doctor, a player is running a mission with a team.  He happens upon a dead player.  Being the helpful sort (the type who goes Doctor in the first place) he decides to res the hapless fellow.  Ooops!  The dead guy had been PvPing, and now the good Samaritan is flagged and, having no decent defensive or offensive abilities, is soon dead himself, probably from an incredibly cowardly type of player who attacks those who can not possibly harm the attacker or defend themselves.  So much for the Team and Mission the doctor was trying to be a part of.  Let's say one of his Teammates comes to his rescue, after diverting to a hardline to load res.  Well, now he's flagged too.  This is forcing people to PvP when they don't want to, which would negate the whole idea of a non-hostile server.  If you want all PvP all the time with no Blue Ressers, go to Vector.  If you are on Recursion or Syntax, accept the fact that you do not have the right to force people to flag when they don't want to; that's reserved for the admins.  I question the moral substance of those who would want to kill even a flagged Doctor.  These are usually the same people who complain about tactics boosters not being "honorable" but then turn around and kill a defenseless doctor who's only trying to help people.  We've had more than enough of the type who think that anything that doesn't guarantee them a PvP kill needs to be "fixed."  There are fair, balanced and correct mechanisms in place which allow the possibility of withdrawal, retreat and recovery and this is as it should be.

I've never bought the "source deleted Smith thru connection of Neo" bunk.  It's a lame excuse of an explanation for people who don't understand the mystical symbolism behind the entire story.  It's another one of those fan created delusions that has somehow gained pseudo-credibility by being endlessly repeated, like "Morpheus found and trained five 'ones' before Neo" (Which has even made it in to MxO "canon.")  I know a lot of The Matrix is open-ended and free for interpretation, but the annihilation at the meeting of opposites is one of those universal dualistic concepts which shouldn't be that hard to wrap a meat-mind around.

The Lounge Next Renaissance Paranoid Smith/Neo Theory Re:Paranoid Smith/Neo Theory PS10N 0 11/05/2007 14:05
Canon from MxO, not from the movies.  Nothing in any of the movies even alludes to "failed ones."  It was a bad idea that someone who wrote/writes for MxO didn't see through and instead used it, giving it more validity than even the "it's endlessly repeated and widely accepted, therefore it must be true" variety of bad idea.

There is a disturbing trend developing here, where people are always responding to what they misunderstood instead of responding to what I actually said.  As a form of communication of concrete ideas, language sucks, and forum posts are the lowest form of language.

The Matrix is a modern myth that incorporates things familiar to us like networked computers and robotics. At its heart, the mythical trumps the mechanical.  Certainly this isn't the place for courses on philosophy, religion, myth and mysticism.  Perhaps those interested could start by finding an English translation of the Sanskrit words sung in Neodammerung/Navras, which are from the Upanishads of the Vedas.  Really, my son was 14 when he saw Revolutions and no one had to "explain" it to him with some trumped up sci-fi notion.  He said, "Neo and Smith were destroyed because they were complete opposites which were brought together, balancing the equation in one violent moment."  Smart kid.

Mazdak walked along the hovercraft’s aft corridor, toward the Captain’s private quarters, his boots clunking heavily on the steel grating.  He’d been the operator onboard TLR for almost two years now, and he’d come to think of the drafty old re-built hovercraft as home.  A big hulk of a man, his large frame barely fit through some of the narrow hallways back here near the billets and crew quarters.  Free born in the Real World forty-something years ago, his size and strength had always been valued for physical labor in Zion, but his real passion was art.  Build something useful and people would be appreciative now, but create something beautiful and it would be appreciated forever.  Some of his paintings hung in the gallery near the Temple Cave in Zion, and Captain PS10N approved of some being displayed in the ship’s galley and a few other places around the craft.  You can’t stare at gray gunmetal bulkheads all the time and still keep a good attitude.  Somewhere, there has to be beauty in your life.  Sure, under the Truce, operatives could take time out while in The Matrix to visit a museum or watch a sunset, but the free-born couldn’t Jack In to do that.  With nature devastated in the Real, beauty was more often where you created it than where you found it.  “I need some time alone with my brushes and canvas,” Mazdak thought as the space between himself and the Captain’s door closed to nothing with a few more long strides.  He hesitated for a moment before knocking.  The Captain had been moody lately; something was up.  Mazdak still remembered clearly the day PS10N had recruited him.  “I need someone I can trust, to keep my back from sprouting knives,” he’d said.  “You’re as artistic with the Code as you are with your brushes, and I want you on my crew.”  They’d been through a lot since then – the collection of the fragments of The One’s RSI, fighting with the Red-eye Agents, the Ancient Exile rebellion, the tricky business with Morpheus over a year ago, assisting in Neurophyte’s escape and trying to stop the subsequent betrayal by Veil, seeing to it that the Assassin got what was coming to him, working with the Enigma Directive and discovering the truth about Cryptos and the Machine deception behind the Cypherite movement, sending the Sleepers back to their dirt-naps and now… now this problem with Anome and his betrayal of Niobe.  That must be what was bothering the Captain.  Before Morpheus went underground, he’d asked PS10N to keep an eye on Niobe, and now Niobe was wounded and imprisoned. That wouldn’t sit well with PS10N’s sense of obligation and responsibility toward his old friend Morpheus.  Unlike so many these days, honor still meant something to the Captain.  The night before Anome’s treachery, PS10N had warned Niobe’s second officer Merrit that someone close to Niobe would betray her soon, but the liaison officer evidently hadn’t had the opportunity to act before it was too late.  Mazdak had learned to trust PS10N’s prescience of fore-thought, that uncanny ability called The Sight by the Oracle, to catch glimpses of what was to be before any rational clue could be gleaned.  What was it that The Oracle had said to PS10N at their first and only meeting?  Something along the line of “You have something of The Sight yourself, PS10N, and you’ve had it since before your Awakening, what with all that business of looking into the ‘paranormal.’ They don’t call you PS10N for nothing, you know, and you don’t really need me to tell you which way the wind is blowing – or where the code streams flow, for that matter.” That was long ago.  Today, and probably more so tomorrow, were most important now.  He raised his hand to knock, but PS10N’s voice answered before he could “Come on in, Maz.  I’ve been expecting you.”  Mazdak’s serious expression broke into a broad grin.  Of all the things that had changed and would change, PS10N’s sense of immediacy, of being ready for what was coming, would be there and give them the edge they would surely need.   … to be continued immediately …
Community Player Events The Battle for One Zero - Prelude The Battle for One Zero - Beginnings PS10N 0 07/28/2006 01:27
The cabin was lit only by the green glow from the computer monitors.  It looked as if the Captain had been awake his entire down-time, again, researching on the Zion Mainframe.  Except for the computers and the food dispenser, the room looked more like an ancient monk’s than a hovercraft captain’s.  The Captain had been busy – the room was strew about with personal items, empty bowls, cups and items indicating that PS10N’s attention hadn’t been on staying tidy.
Paper was a rare luxury, made from synthetic fibers and always recycled – it was far too expensive to be used for long-term storage.  These days only the Council and the rest of the Zion Bureaucracy had use of it.  History told of a time when entire forests were cut down for disposable tissue.  Now, there wasn’t a single tree on the planet.  PS10N liked to write – he said that having information in front of you is the best way to think, and even with three computer screens active at once, you only saw the information you’d requested.  Tangible scripts never got minimized, they were always there, potential inspiration simply waiting for the right moment to be noticed.  The solution to the lack of paper had been simple.  Clay tablets could be made with materials readily available, marked with anything that passed for a stylus and wiped clear to be used again.  It was these vaguely cuneiform tablets laying about which gave the room the look of an ancient scribe’s.  The more important notes and logs would be typed into the ship’s mainframe memory later, assuming there was going to be a later.
PS10N tapped a few keys into the Zion Mainframe’s console.
    “Accessing the PS10N folder again?”
    “That’s where it all is.”
His fingers kept tapping smartly on the keys, information flashing across the screen at his request.   “It’s all coming together,” he said, as if they were merely continuing a conversation they’d started earlier.  “I’m going after it.”
“Now, Captain?  With the Unlimit Reactors so active?”
“It’s now or it’s not.  I’m going after the gun.  The Zion Rebels will handle the U-Rs.”
“You thinking of calling in the I.A.?”
“All part of the plan.” PS10N chuckled.
Mazdak read the codes being typed into the Zion Mainframe Console.  “You’re making it pretty easy for them.  The basics in ROT13?  That might keep out a few n00bs, but the mass of Redpills will be privy to it.” PS10N glanced sidewise at his operator and raised an eyebrow.  Mazdak tried again. “I’d have that password cracked in a few nanocycles.”
“Don’t worry, Maz, it will get thicker further in.  The merely curious will shrug it off, leaving the focused to gain the reward.”

Days had passed.  The information had been planted, like so many binary seeds waiting to spring to life.  "Any word yet, Cap’n?"  Mazdak asked.
"Nothing," PS10N sighed.  "Our team of operatives has confirmed, of course, and we’ve had some vague threats from some who might give us some trouble, but nothing like I had hoped."
"Don’t they realize what’s at stake?" the beefy operator asked.
     "Evidently not."
"There are some pretty hefty rewards and bounties involved, aren’t there?"
"Over 15 million $info in combined rewards and bounties, yes."
"And that hasn’t peaked anyone’s interest?"
"They probably don’t know, or are too lazy to find out.  I thought the Redpills were an intelligent, creative, tenacious lot and would jump at the chance to hack a puzzle for great reward, but it seems like they just want it handed to them, as usual.  Lazy.  Or maybe just not smart enough."
"Are you going to?  Hand it to them I mean?"
"No, they’ll have to follow the trail and find out how to earn the rewards.  I’m not a nurse-bot, I’m not going to wipe their noses and bottoms for them."
"How does that affect the plan then?"
"It doesn’t.  We’re going in tomorrow.  BlazinWolf is a lot closer to the neural kinetic threshold than I am.  If he passes it, he won’t be able to come in with us."  PS10N paused.  "Assuming he hasn’t passed it already.  Tomorrow.  Definitely tomorrow, we go - whether or not any other Redpills have figured out the clues and know how to claim rewards or bounties.  That just means I leave a lot richer than originally planned.  No harm there - at all."
"Good to see you smile again, Captain," Mazdak chuckled.
"I’m hitting my rack, and you should too.  Get some sleep.  Maybe there is still a spark of curiosity and cleverness in some Redpills, and they’ll have it figured out by morning."
The hovercraft TLR seemed to sigh itself as it entered power-down mode for the night.  On the computer screen, a green cursor flashed steadily, patiently waiting for any Redpill hacker smart enough to follow the trail.
"Tomorrow for sure, we go." PS10N thought as he drifted off to sleep.

In the heat of a battle, when it's life and death, especially when it's a Live Event, things happen so fast that usually people are left wondering what the heck just happened.  When it comes to timing, often there are no choices, you act out of instinct to survive.  I know I'm hitting keys and clicking as fast as I can, and honestly I can't tell you what part of a round is active when I hit a new tactic, as I said usually there is no choice in the matter.  I guess the difference comes down to intent to exploit or just too busy thinking ahead that you've hit the tactic and moved on to your next action.
Feedback Forums Player Versus Player Feedback Switching tactics is an exploit Re:Switching tactics is an exploit PS10N 0 09/17/2007 15:14
How about this: fix the bug, close the exploit hole, make it so all tactics go dark for the rest of the round after you've hit the first one, then they all light up again at the start of the next round.  The whole philosophy of "it's a bug and we're not going to fix it so please don't exploit it" isn't realistic and flies in the face of the whole idea of debugging the game to improve it.

Some of us have been with MxO longer than Rarebit and remember that this is the very same issue that led to the shiny textures being removed in the first place!  The shiny textures brought up all these exact same issues in the past and the "solution" was to remove them all together.  I got a real kick out of the release notes saying they were turned back on, especially with the optimistic tone of "we found something broken and fixed it, yay!"  Some of us saw this coming.  [mild_sarcasm] Throw out the baby with the bathwater, solve the problem by nerfing the feature; it saves time.[/mild_sarcasm]  You have the same choice the Monolith dev team had:  fix it if you can or remove it if you can't or if you can't spare the time to fix it.  I hope other issues can get their own thread and we can all work together to make MxO as feature-rich and bug-free as possible.

P.S. Darkhawk, yes when an RSI dons high or medium boots, the clothing texture in use "scrunches up" from the ankles to the waist.

I load as a KungFu/Karate/Awakened mix.  I change all my clothing to the best I have for Damage Resistances.  I apply all the "sticky" abilities/items I can (abilities and items which cause a symbol to appear under the hotbars without a timer or with a very long timer) including Hyper-Dodge, finishing with the Kung Fu Master Upgrade.   I flag up for PvP.  There is an attack and we are in interlock and I use "specials" until my IS runs out.  OK, so now I put on my Sakura Ninja Bandanna and Dragonskin Wrap in hopes that the increased IS Regen will build up so I can use another "special."  My opponent has switched from shooting to melee attacks, so I hit Hyper-Block.

Did I just stack/exploit?

Finally the light comes on, thank you Bayamo.  What I understood from your post is this: the only Influences from clothing that can become stacked are those which match the Attributes of an Upgrade ability, and they stack at the time the upgrade is applied.  Now that I know this, I can avoid it, and it means that changing clothing during combat isn't stacking so long as no clothing which Influenced the Attributes of the Upgrade was being worn at the time the Upgrade was applied.  Hope we don't see this as a fix: "You must remove all your clothing before applying that Upgrade!"

It robs of health to restore inner strength.  It was a reward item for coming thru The Death of The Destroyer event with your pixels intact.  You don't have to equip it to use it.  Right-click Activate Item from your Inventory, then equip it if you want to.  I'm not sure but I think that if you hotbar it, hitting the hotbutton will equip it and start the cool down timer running without giving you IS.  Hitting the hotbutton when it is equipped activates it.

P.S. Thank you devs for fixing the cool down timer display on this item.

No difference if used from the Inventory or when Equipped.
If you are going to hotbar it, pre-equip it before hand because the first hit of the hotbutton will equip it, not give you any IS and disable it for the length of the cool-down timer, while if it is equipped and you hit the hotbutton, you get the IS.

Try some of the following, assuming the person you are looking for has the handle Redpill1

/target Redpill1
/addwaypoint Redpill1
/face Redpill1
/follow Redpill1

if you already have him targeted, you can use the %T variable like this:

/target Redpill1
/addwaypoint %T
/face
/follow

Good luck

Try my experience of all fedoras flickering on everyones' foreheads, all bandannas flickering and some shirt/coat combos flickering at the chest.  Zero-thickness textures like some props and signs love to flicker for me too.  I'd settle for a Holy Fedora over all this.

It took four of us three days to get the $100 million for the key.  It's not really a big deal.

Well, that's it... I'm quitting... when the forums degenerate to talking about problems with Zippy's crack... I'm out of here.

[Just kidding.  Zippy's crack, while a horrible problem in MxO, isn't something worth quitting over.]
