Community General Discussion The Matrix Return - Presented by Fan Fiction Mystery Theatre The Matrix Return - Presented by Fan Fiction Mystery Theatre Stack 0 01/23/2009 08:51

Greetings, MxO, and long time no see. I've been on a bit of a hiatus for the last few months, and during that time I've been helping to produce a weekly radio-drama-esque production called Fan Fiction Mystery Theatre. Each week we take the worst best fan fiction that this series of tubes has to offer and present dramatic readings to our faithful listeners.

Now that the show has some experience under its belt, we felt it was high time that we produce a rendition of the work that first sparked our inspiration: The Matrix Return, by the worst writer ever acclaimed fan fiction author Peter Chimaera. As it was only through this community that I ever found this literary gem, I thought it only fitting that I return the favor for you all.

Huge thanks to Starschwar for first posting the link to the YTMND here several years ago. If it weren't for that, Fan Fiction Mystery Theatre never would've existed in the first place.

Community General Discussion I finally hit 50!! I finally hit 50!! Stack 0 09/09/2007 03:46

After two and a half years, and over a months' worth of in-game play time, I've finally hit level 50. And yes, as seen in the screenshot, it was at the Club Avalon--I had saved the XP boost tool that I got from the Morpheus mission and waited to use it until I only had one bar left to go.

I would say I've gotta be the player to take the longest to get here since starting out on day one, but I've heard people say that before, and I'm sure there are plenty more to come.

Here's a shot of the Pepsi bottle that I cracked open to commemorate the occasion:

I happened to find myself sitting in front of a rather awesome set of reflective glass windows earlier this evening and got a few screenies. This one turned out the best for some Photoshopping:

Original

I didn't have the best of screenies to use as reflections, though, so I just went with what I had. Too impatient to go back in and get some better shots.

I also realized that if my sunglasses were reflecting the red sky and that suspiciously half-present figure, the windows behind me probably would be, too... but hey, I intentionally made it a bit wonky with the disparity between the two reflections, so a minor detail like that can slide. SMILEY

Plus it just looks badass with the glowing green grid pattern in the background.

In preparation for a massive Matrix film marathon that I hope to put on for some friends of mine this weekend, I've been spending the last couple weeks polishing up my old Enter the Matrix movie that I made last year. Sadly, the whole thing is far too big to host anywhere for free for very long, so I threw together a short segment containing Ghost's shoot-out with the police in the Post Office lobby and uploaded it to YouTube (the first YouTube video I've ever uploaded! SMILEY)

Enter the Matrix - Post Office Lobby Shoot-out

The main goal of the last few weeks was to incorporate first-person shots of the police and other NPCs, since the gameplay segments all consisted of the normal behind-the-character perspectives, which made for some very boring scenes. The lobby shoot-out was especially one of those segments that needed a bit of enhancement.

If you all like it, I can see about putting up some more clips, like the shoot-out in the sewers.

Enjoy!

Does anybody have any really good screenshots of Downtown that they'd be willing to let me use for an art project? I need to make a postcard for an art class I'm taking, and I figured what better location to use as the backdrop than the Matrix? SMILEY

I'd use one of my own, but all of mine are crap. I need something with as many buildings visible as possible, and with as much draw distance, overbright, and resolution as possible (but not too much overbright... that I do have a screenshot of SMILEY).

Also, I'll need one by tomorrow (hooray for procrastination!), but if nobody has anything, I'll just filch one from my stash of swiped screenies and call it good XD

I'm sure everyone has heard of the child sex abuse sting operations that news agencies all across the country have been doing lately, most notably Dateline NBC's "To Catch a Predator" shows. I first heard about them from a friend who showed me the comedic Bro *CENSORED* parody about college guys getting caught trying to *CENSORED* each other.

Well, as it turns out, a guy who lives just down at the end of the hall in my dorm was one of six men who just got busted by Portland's local CBS affiliate, KOIN 6 News:

http://www.koin.com/Global/story.asp?s=6059325 (link to a video of the news segment at the top)

He drove up to Portland this week, thinking he was going to have sex with a 13 year-old-girl. Overnight, he lost all of his college financial aid, probably got expelled, will end up as a felon and a registered sex offender, and could face 5 to 10 years prison time.

It didn't take us completely by surprise, since this guy was a little too open about his intimacy (he and his girlfriend were gettin' it on while one of my close friends was playing X-Box just a few feet away in the room). But to take advantage of a little girl... just sickening.

I just hope this message becomes pervasive enough that nobody in this country even thinks about doing something like this anymore. It has to stop.

Well, I decided that since Anome has become one of the more dramatic characters in MxO, his portrait on the MxO Archive should be made a bit spiffier than what I originally had:

So I made this a week or two ago from one of the Live Event pictures:

The eye glow was added with a stretched circular gradient, and the code drip on the right half was added (it spells my bluepill and redpill names in mirrored Japanese SMILEY ). The background was a bit dull, so I stole used one from Anome's recent all-out rampages, added a rain effect, and got this:

I haven't done much with rain, nor with making eyes glow bright green, so I'm wondering if anybody has any suggestions or if it's good enough as it is.

Really, could this be anyone but someone from MxO's wonderfully sarcastic community? If it is, I find great humor in the fact that someone named themselves this on a Web site as serious as WikiPedia.

Well, after having no luck with the half-dozen places I applied to for work this summer, I remembered seeing a link to a site that offers the chance to earn money playing video games:

http://www.gametesterguide.com/?hop=snowcone

It's $34.99 to get started, with wages ranging between $9-$80 an hour, just for playing video games and providing some feedback. Apparently, they also usually let you keep the games you test.

So... I'm wondering what the catch is. It has a money-back guarantee, but I bet it doesn't have a no-spam guarantee.

Anybody know anything about this or have any opinions?
The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion Trying my hand at video game design (again) Trying my hand at video game design (again) Stack 0 07/08/2006 01:25

Well, in case anyone's wondered why I haven't been in game since Monday, there's a reason: I just installed Morrowind.

Famous last words, I'm sure.

The game itself wouldn't normally be enough to keep me away from MxO... however, it happens to come with a little something called The Elder Scrolls Construction Set. It's essentially a development kit, or whatever you call it, for the game. It lets you add, remove, or modify any building, landscape, person, or item in the game. There's also the fact that the game world is apparently infinite in size. This means that, given enough time, one could conceivably build an entirely different world, as big as they wanted, essentially making a totally new game with the Morrowind engine.

It just so happens that I've been writing a still-unpublished series of novels that take place in an imaginary medieval world of mine, and the only times I've ever been able to see it myself have been when I draw illustrations or when I made a simple 2-D top-down game in RPG Maker 2000 back in high school. It also just so happens that Morrowind has nearly the exact same engine that I had envisioned back in 6th grade when I had the idea for making a game that takes place in this world: an immense landscape without the usual cramped little villages and tiny little forests, where you can just wander off and whip out your sword and kill a thief out in the woods whenever you want.

It also happens to be in 3-D.

So, now, behold--the before and after:

It's beyond anything I ever hoped to see in reality of my ideas so soon. I'm not sure if Morrowind will be able to handle the full load of content I have planned, but so far it's exactly what I wanted: first-person sword fighting and exploration, the ability to read books, and the kind of thing where people react directly to your actions. You can swipe things from people and they actually get mad, and generic NPCs cry for help if you attack them (or fight back).

I also now have a renewed sense of appreciation for the MxO development team. It took me about five days to make a single Inn. You guys built a city. Even if a lot of it is cookie-cutter, you guys deserve a much bigger pat on the back than we could ever give.

...and I've finally bought a replacement URL:

http://www.mxoarchive.net

The downtime was, if I recall correctly, because of the merge between Radio Mega City and MxO Resource, which wiped out my hosted files with Symmetric. After reuploading the files to his new hosting location and buying a new URL myself, everything is almost back to how it was before.

Here are some known issues:
  • The old URL is still in an extended grace period, and I don't own the rights to recover it
  • The Sentinel archive and the Music archive are both down until I can find and upload the files
  • Some pages may have updates-in-progress that were never finalized before being uploaded, since I often worked on the files on my computer without uploading them and didn't have backups of the public versions
That's all that I know of myself. I'm on dial-up for the time being, so I can't double-check every page tonight (especially considering how many screenshot pages there are for my LiveJournal), but it's at least better than it's been for the last month, which was nothing :smileyhappy:

Enjoy!... and let me know if you find anything else wrong! :smileyvery-happy:

Abilities and Disciplines Dojo - Operative Discussion Maps of the Operative trees... but what to add? Maps of the Operative trees... but what to add? Stack 0 04/11/2006 14:11

Hey all,

I don't post here at all normally, but as I recently and randomly decided to start working on an ability tree thingy for The MxO Archive, I decided I'd post what I have so far here and see what everyone thinks about what I should include:

Operative

Soldier
Spy

I originally started making those with the intention of spacing them exactly like they are in the in-game menus, just compiled into large maps. The problem is that wastes a heck of a lot of empty space. So, I spent a few hours last week condensing them and adding the Soldier tree (which I hadn't gotten around to). So, now I have complete graphics for all of the operative trees, but they only include the icons.

So, my question is... how should I go about presenting the rest of the information that goes along with all these abilities? Should I try and cram in a couple of basic essential data numbers, like the minimum level requirements and amount of memory taken up, or should I just leave the graphics as they are and create links to further information by using an image map over the graphics?

Regardless of whether I add any basic info to these maps directly, I'll almost definitely be turning them into image maps to lead to the rest of the information like how much damage / buffing / etc. they do. For an example of how the image map might work, click here (the links won't lead to actual information, but it should give some idea of how it would work).

And yes, I know the awakened page is from the old combat system. That page is probably about a year old. The new maps for the operative tree have all been updated for CR2.0.

I don't know if this has been discussed before or not, but I noticed something yesterday while tinkering around with the hacker tree in Interlock with one of my alts. I would switch between viral attacks and Cheap Shot, but I noticed that my style would change as soon as I hit the button to use the attack even though I still had a move that used another style that was about to be executed. Has this been taken into account in calculating the bonuses that styles grant you when using abilities in Interlock? 'Cause it seems to me that if I use Cheap Shot while one of my viral attacks is queued up and about to hit,  it switches to Self Defense immediately and removes the Hacker bonuses too early. Would it work better to have the style switch immediately before the attack is executed instead of when you select it, or is this already not a problem at all?

Included in the list are all of the recent options that Rarebit posted (deactivating the spotlight at night, altering the screenshot paths and compression rate, and altering the duration of the day/night cycle). It also includes other useful stuff like deactivating the Matrix codestream upon jacking in. I'll also be hunting down some others (like camera distances and such) and testing them out myself, but if anybody has any specific requests, go ahead and post what you've got. This is by no means a complete list.

While going through all my screenshots for my LiveJournal
entry about
the day that the Assassin was killed, I noticed a problem with
Cinematic 3.1: the sky isn't blacked out by the clouds of flies that
swarmed over the City during the entire event. On the contrary, the
cinematic has one of Sati's beautiful sunrises in the background. The
flies weren't removed
until the patch the day after the event, but even so, the cinematic
takes place prior to the final death of the Assassin, so shouldn't the
flies still be seen in the sky? And doesn't Cinematic 2.2 also have a
beautiful sunrise in the background? That one definitely should have
the flies in the sky, as it was supposed to take place on the day
before the Assassin was killed.

I know I'm probably being really picky, but I just thought I'd mention
this. It would've been cool to show future players what the sky looked
like during the event, but it's probably too late to go back and change
it....

Greetings, fellow Redpills. As Faction Leader of The Oneironauts, I
would like to extend an invitation to any and all Zionites seeking to
serve as part of a faction dedicated to the recovery of the body of Neo, the
liberation of humanity from the Machinist Power Plant, and the ultimate
restoration of Earth to its former glory.

The Oneironauts (oh-nye-rah-nots) are so named because of our
understanding that the Matrix is nothing more than a dream. Like one
who becomes lucid during sleep, we have been awakened to the truth and
have mastery and control over it. With this realization comes the task
of correcting the wrongs that have been commmitted by human and machine
alike.

- We believe that the goals of Morpheus are for the benefit of humanity.
As such, we will do everything in our power to fight for his goals and
recover the body of Neo and restore his Residual Self Image.

- We believe that the Oracle is trustworthy and can guide the Awakened
along the path that leads to the ultimate liberation of humanity.

- We believe that if we restore our own planet Earth to its former
glory, it will provide a much more satisfying existence than any the
Matrix may try to offer.

- We believe that Machinist and Exile programs alike have just as much
of a right to live as humans. As such, we will not allow the Matrix to
be completely destroyed. It is our hope that the Matrix may be
maintained permanently to let the Exiles to continue to live and to
allow those who wish to remain in it to do so. However, we also hope
to provide a better environment for bluepills to awaken to than the
desolate graveyard that we currently call home so that there will be
nobody who chooses the blue pill over the red.

For now, further details can be found on The Oneironauts: General Information
page on The MxO Archive. Any questions can either be posted here or e-mailed
to me at [email protected].

I was inspired today to start working on an old project I had forgotten
about for the MxO Archive: an MxO / MMO dictionary. I gave up on it
after a single afternoon because it involved a lot of work and delves
into areas about MxO that I'm not as experienced with. So, I would be
grateful for any assistance that other MxO players can offer in
gathering information for this dictionary.

I only have one question at the moment, but I'll most likely have more
as I continue working on this. My first question is in regard to buffs
and debuffs. In trying to define the term "debuff," I've stated that it
is applicable to debuffs as a result of an ability only. Does anyone
know, though, if there is any clothing in the game that has a debuff
effect, like maybe some clothing that reduces one stat while increasing
another? I know other RPGs often have clothing items that behave like
this, but I've never seen one in MxO.

Anyway, that's it for now. If anyone has any terms that they'd like to
know the definition for or terms for which they know the definition,
feel free to post them here and I'll take them into consideration. I'm
going all-out and including pronounciation, parts of speech, irregular
inflection, etymology, and derivation and while I can usually figure
most of
those out on my own, the etymology can be difficult to find, as
Internet word origins are very hard to trace and the stories about who
came up with them or where they were first used often conflict with
each other.

The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion The last we'll ever hear of Sophia Stewart The last we'll ever hear of Sophia Stewart Stack 0 10/14/2005 18:51

Many of you probably remember the rumors awhile ago about a
woman from Utah named Sophia Stewart who claimed that the Wachowski
brothers stole ideas from her book, The Third Eye, for the script of The Matrix.
Many people even used this as a pathetic excuse for why they think the
sequels sucked, claiming that "it was because the Wachowskis wrote
them."

I now present to you the ultimate pwnage:

Sophia Stewarts' day in court ends with dismissal for the 'Mother of the Matrix'
By Quentin Wells

The
copyright infringement lawsuit filed by Sophia Stewart on April 24,
2003 against the Warchowski Brothers, Warner Bros. and others came to
an end in the courtroom of the Honorable Margaret M Morrow, federal
judge for the U.S. District Court for the Central District of
California on June 14, 2005. The lawsuit alleged that the movies "The
Matrix," and its two sequels, and "The Terminator," and its two sequels
were all based on Stewart's novella entitled "The Third Eye."

Stewart's
claims against all the defendants were summarily dismissed by Judge
Morrow because she and her attorneys had failed, over the two year
period since the case was filed, to respond in a timely manner to the
court's schedule for management of the case.

The facts of the
case were not heard at all in the proceedings that led to the
dismissal. Rather, the court based its decision for dismissal on the
fact that Stewart and her attorneys "had not been diligent either in
pursuing or in responding to discovery. Despite the fact that the
action had been on file for almost two years, she made no effort to
propound any discovery to defendants until the fact discovery cut-off
date set by the court. Nor did she respond in timely fashion to
discovery propounded by defendants. This was consistent with the
overall manner in which plaintiff has prosecuted the action, missing
deadlines, seeking extensions, and generally ignoring the Federal Rules
of Civil Procedures and court orders."

With the dismissal,
Stewart's claim that she is the "Mother of the Matrix" and the creator
of the ideas and characters upon which that movie series, as well as
the "Terminator" series were based, appears to have died without ever
having been heard in an open courtroom forum.

Whether or not she
could have substantiated her allegations that "The Third Eye" was in
fact the original creative concept behind the multi-billion dollar
group of films will probably never be known since Stewart's attorney's
did not prove the allegations through the court process.

The
fortune in damage awards that Stewart might have been able to secure,
had her claims been documented to the court's satisfaction, has
vanished in the face of the court's ruling regarding her conduct and
that of her attorneys in the case. She is now left with nothing but the
expenses she has incurred in her pursuit of the matter plus the costs
and attorneys fees of the defendants which were awarded to them by the
court as a result of what it deemed Stewart's failure to reasonably
follow the legal procedure set in motion when she first filed her claim.

This
case, which began as one of the largest (in terms of potential damage
awards, if successful) and highest profile copyright infringement cases
in U.S. history, has already had a tortured history since its
inception, with a staggering amount of misinformation, disinformation,
and outright lies and libel being circulated about it on the Internet
and through thousands of news outlets around the world. A significant
amount of the reports about the Sophia Stewart v. Andy Wachowski, etal.
case have been sourced to an article headlined "Mother of the Matrix
Victorious" by Martha Carter which appeared in the 28 October 2004
issue of GlobeLink.

This article, written by Miss Carter
following a personal interview with Sophia Stewart contained some
misleading information regarding the current status of the lawsuit.
Although a correction was posted within 48 hours, few people read this
revised and accurate description of the progress of the lawsuit. Over
600,000, however, read the erroneous original report and unknown
millions more have since read other equally misleading stories based on
the GlobeLink story (without correction) that have appeared on
literally hundreds of other web sites around the globe.

Readers
of the misleading information erroneously concluded that the copyright
infringement trial had been held in early October 2004 and that Sophia
Stewart's assertions that the "Matrix" and "Terminator" movies were
based on her manuscript, "The Third Eye," copyrighted in 1981, and
submitted by her in the mid-eighties in response to an ad placed by the
Wachowski Brothers, requesting new sci-fi works. In actual fact, the
court proceedings in October 2004 simply confirmed that Sophia Stewart
appeared to have sufficient merit in her claims (and, by implication,
sufficient documentation to substantiate them) to warrant a trial that
would establish or refute their validity.

As a result of the
June 14, 2005 summary judgment that question will probably never be
answered, at least not in an objective forum with established rules of
evidence and procedure. Ms. Stewart has given numerous interviews and
widely publicized her claims on the Internet and in other media in
recent months, but regrettably, she has not provided to the defendants
she was suing, or to the court in which she filed her claim, the
factual information that would have verified her assertions that she is
really the "Mother of the Matrix."

Studios Cleared of Stealing 'Matrix' Movie Idea
By Matthew Heller

A
Utah woman may have to pay the legal bills of two Hollywood studios
after a judge dismissed her claims that the makers of the "Matrix" and
"Terminator" films stole her idea for a science-fiction movie.

Accusing
Fox and Warner Bros. of copyright infringement, Sophia Stewart was
seeking more than $200 million in damages and royalties of 10 percent
of the gross income from the films. Given that they have made about
$2.5 billion, her total take would be nearly $500 million.

The
individual defendants included brothers Joel and Andy Wachowski, the
writer-directors of the three "Matrix" films, and "Terminator" director
James Cameron.

Stewart has found plenty of support on the
Internet where she was dubbed "The Mother of the Matrix." She claimed
to have sent her futuristic manuscript "The Third Eye" to the
Wachowskis in response to a magazine ad they had placed and that they
used that material in violation of her copyright.

But U.S.
District Judge Margaret M. Morrow had no difficulty granting the
studios' motion for summary judgment, finding no admissible evidence
that the Wachowskis had access to "The Third Eye" or that the work was
strikingly similar to "The Matrix."

The plaintiff conducted no
discovery, twice failed to show up for a scheduled deposition and never
produced the crucial magazine ad. She did submit photographs of nine
"Matrix" characters, but Morrow said in her order that they "bear
little resemblance" to the descriptions of characters in "The Third
Eye."

The studios have filed a motion for fees and costs, which
could easily exceed six figures.
The motion will be heard Sept. 26
along with Stewart's motion for reconsideration.

SOPHIA'S WARNZ DEFENDANTS, "GET TO KNOW ME..."
posted jul.1.2005

It
seemz there are corrupt parties not only in Hell-y-wood, but in the
judicial system. Because of this, Sophia has fired 2 of her lawyerz
with the 3rd claiming to have withdrawn in the court system. Sophia is
rallying for honest lawyerz to come to her aid who will not sell out on
her. She stated in our phone interview, "...because with a 2.5 billion
lawsuit, who can you trust but God?" She added, “every man for himself
and God for us all.”

Back in April 1999, the defendants, were
negotiating a settlement with Sophia. After settlement talks were
aborted with Sophia, on April 16, 1999, the defendants went out and got
Matrix movie one copywritten, setting off a dispute of ownership.
“Proving that whatever they copywrote in 1994, the script that they put
the name of Matrix had nothing to do with the film, Matrix one,” Sophia
stated.

The defendant's have not entered any copyright info into
the federal court system to show ownership of any of the movies. They
haven't shown any evidence of original work, films, scripts or any
documents to show that they actually wrote The Matrix.

"The
defendant’s lawyerz have done everything to get the case thrown out."
Sophia said. "All they've been doing is lying to the court system over
and over again, trying to get the case dismissed with prejudice so it
can never ever be brought up again." Sophia feelz she’s been like a
thorn in the defendant’s side and has no planz of going anywhere. When
asked about this, Sophia stated, "This work is in honor of God and I am
not gonna go away, I have other work to do. Quoting The Game’s ‘Hate It
or Love It’, “I ain’t goin’ nowhere so you can get to know me.” God is
with me, so no man can be against me."

You thought The Terminator and The Matrix trilogies were deep? Sophia's
ready to unleash her next epic, Soulless, currently in development.

Proof that not everything you read about on the Internet is true.

Ms. Stewart, I must say you just got...

And...

That is all.

We can now forget about Sophia Stewart and go on with our normal, redpill lives. And if you still think Reloaded and Revolutions sucked,
I'm sorry to say that they were written by the same guys that wrote the
original. If you're going to bash the sequels, at least come up with
some good reasons.

Despite the fact that I probably wouldn't actually wear this in public,
I must say that this is quite an impressive mix of The Matrix and coulrophobia, both of which apply very much to my personality.

As the old topic was deleted along with everything else, I figured I should make a new topic so that those who don't know about the city maps on The MxO Archive can find them easily:

http://www.mxoarchive.net/maps.html

Includes maps taken from the in-game menus and map screens. The small-scale maps are identical to those in-game, but the larger maps have been compiled from the hardline menu screens and the neighborhoods have been color-coded to make it easier to see where the borders are. They aren't necessarily 100% accurate in terms of borders, but I did take great pains to make sure they were compiled perfectly and not just thrown together without care.

I'll try and get any incomplete features finished over the next few weeks, but I have a lot of other things to catch up on now that I have my laptop back, so updates may be a while. I'll announce anything new on this topic in the future.

Enjoy!

Community General Discussion Jacking in again after a two-month break Jacking in again after a two-month break Stack 0 09/18/2005 16:33
Well, the repairs to my laptop took a little longer than expected
because somebody at Hewlett-Packard felt the need to reformat my hard
drive while they were repairing the monitor. I had about 50 GB on this
laptop, about 5 GB of which were MxO screenshots dating all the way
back to the beta test, and all of it was deleted. Needless to say, I
was more than a little angry.

Fortunately, I had backed up some of my screenshots, including the
first half of the beta screenshots (which I totally forgot about until
I stumbled upon them yesterday), and Best Buy was able to run data
recovery and piece together about half of the rest from the live game.
I also had a lot of other important files copied onto my brother's
computer beforehand, so basically, I didn't lose much, despite all
those 50 GB that were lost.

Anyway, I'm repatching the game at the moment, and I'll be updating The
MxO Archive over the next few weeks, as well as catching up on the
backlog of e-mail and journal entries that have piled up. I probably
won't be able to put quite as much time into MxO as I have in the past,
but I'll definitely still be involved.

I'm also interested to know what's been going on these past two months.
Apparently there haven't been any new live events, and I'll be catching
up on the criticals as soon as the patch is done, but what else has
developed in the game since I left? Anything new to complain about? Any
chance of the old forums being archived? Anybody know any way to make
1,161 MB download any faster?

Hope to see everyone again soon!
