News and Announcements Broadcast Depth Thank you Re:Thank you Canbus 0 02/03/2009 21:35

I am sorry to see you go after everything you've done for the playerbase. It was fun fighting alongside you with various EPN events despite whatever disagreements we had regarding how LESIG was run. Coming from someone that did not have the time commitment to play this game as much as I used to compared to 2005, it took me a very long time to understand what lengths and painful measures you went through to run these events despite the miniscule amount of resources you had. I hope things go well in your life and wish for the best.  Semper Fi.

I'm sensing a fundamental flaw in this sentence.

Besides, if you can scrounge up a couple of mates for a couple of hours, as you say, then you can get anything you like.

Easier said than done. My schedule just doesn't allow me to do so period, and by the time I'm able to spend a few hours on the game, my Italian faction members are already sleeping or at work. Things don't help much now that 98% of my friends are gone due to real life. I could just as well cancel my subscription altogether.

Regardless of this being a multiplayer game, it doesn't mean someone should be *FORCED* to get a friend to help out on the mission. I jack in only to see how many of the people I know are online. If I see less than ten people on my buddy list in terms of who's in-game or not, it's not worth my time. Getting a reliable level 50 Zion/EPN friendly player is as common as a needle in a haystack, and this is coming from someone that lives in the same time zone as the devs.

When most of the content in MxO is perfectly soloable I don't really see the problem of making some things that require a group to complete.

Unless you have a faction that loves to play the game 24/7 without dealing with real life, you're royally screwed. As I mentioned in multiple posts, I was around since Nightfall and had a lot of fun with the game, but the recent set of updates have been consistently leaving a sour taste in my mouth. Right now, the overall interest in the game has been so diminished I only see ten to twelve players on my buddy list tops whenever I jack in. I've already mentioned that I don't have the time commitment to jack in as much as I'd like to considering that I have to worry about real life than wait for 5+ hours or so just to get a reliable partner to help me out, or jack in for only ten minutes before I have to take off for martial arts lessons or work. Forcing group work for critical missions just already pushed me away as it is considering the maximum team size I can only take ranges from two to three teammates from my most active faction members depending on whether or not I can jack in around the same time as them. Hell, doing one standard mission solo as it is forced the whole game to rely on luck rather than my skill.

As someone who watched both the 1989 Dolph Lungdren and the Thomas Jane film, War Zone is actually true to the source material. If you want a decent R-rated action movie, this is a decent ticket. Hell, I prefer this over the Nolan Batman movies in terms of being able to watch the hand-to-hand fights.

I agree with the need for making some of this content more readily available to players who need to solo. It's not that people want to always solo, but for some timezones it can be far too challenging to find any other players. For example when I was playing last night, I only found 5 other players in my hardline hopping and none were over level 20.

When I first bought this game I was attracted to the fact that most, if not all, of the content back then could be handled solo. Too much of the new high level content is aimed at group work now. That's all well and good if you can find a group. But for those who can't, why deny them that content?

I think it would be helpful if something was done to ease this problem. I'm sure there must be something that could be done, even if it's by way of temporary simulcra or something that are specifically purchased for the task for an example - although it's probably better if I keep any real ideas to my own topic, if I ever come up with something feasible.

Chuui hit the nail on the head here. As it is, I don't have the time commitment for MxO as much as I used to in 2005. I'm busy with college and martial arts training, something I'm not willing to give up. As it is, this game is gearing more towards the unemployed or school students than it used to be. Hell, I barely have any friends online just because they have a personal life to attend to (pretty much every U.S.-based players in my faction.). The only thing that keeps me subscribing to this game are the critical missions since my chances of attending Live Events have been nill since last Spring, and with the recent format, I feel partially screwed on soloing missions when it comes to dealing with multiple level 51 NPCs at the same time, and god-forbid the scripted level 55 Agent.

The main problem with this current format not every single player has connections, nor knows when each server has a "hot jack-in timeslot" because pretty much 90% of us are either in school, college, or have a job. Real life comes first for everyone, and I barely have enough time for this game as it is. Right now, I'm jaded enough to cancel my subscription two months from now if this system stays in place permanently. I've been around since the end of Nightfall, and this game is not solo-friendly anymore (don't say "Use facebook/Myspace/etc.". I only see ten lvl 50 Zion/EPN players max on my buddy list if I'm lucky enough, and only have three active faction members whenever I log in, which means my chances of enjoying the content are pretty much nill).

Even as a level 50 EPN operative, my chances of completing every single mission is pretty much slashed, unless I am lucky enough to find a player willing to help out like MindsweepX. My current PC is technically supposed to run FEAR, and was slightly above minimum spec requirements from SystemRequirementsLab.com website, but it only does the bare minimum at best without any major slowdowns. PC gaming has been dying mainly due to bad programs, system-hogging resources, targetting only at least 5% of the population that can afford said hardware, the crap that is SecuRom, and gaming in general is just too expensive as it is already. No one should have to buy or upgrade a new PC yearly just to play the next recent game only to find out that the game three months later will render the recent computer obsolete. BTW, that mentality is why we're facing global warming.

From your last paragraph I can tell you're just splurting whatever you can think of to sound smart. I'm sorry, I'm not going to get in a tout with you, but you're completely wrong.

#1 about Vista. http://www.mojaveexperiment.com/
Until you've tried Vista for at least two to three months, you cannot comment on its integrity as an operating system.
#2 about PC gaming dying.
It's quite the opposite as a matter of fact. Just recently Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning came out, which is now boasting nearly ONE MILLION subscribers in a month, making it the fastest growing MMO to date. Guess what, you need a pretty nice PC to run it.
#3 With the introduction of DX10, most computers can last 3-4 years without even a graphics card change. If you've got an 8800+ or a 4850+, you'll be set for at least 3 generations.

I'd rather you know what you're talking about before you pull facts from no where.

#1. Did Mojaveexperiment target gamers? Was there any article from G4 or any other internet websites that Vista's problems just went away? No.

#2. From The U.S. Census Bureau's Popclock website, the population for the United States is 305,484,522, while the global population is 6,732,139,449. From those numbers, only less than 1% of either population can afford expensive PCs and/or the expertise to build them.

#3. What's to stop someone from creating Direct X 11 three months from now?

I'm not advocating that at all, Canbus.  I haven't honestly upgraded my PC in years either beyond a new gfx card that is now weaker than what you get on board in even newish PCs.  I don't have the cash to do it, and I honestly don't play enough PC games to have the interest even if I was rolling in dough.

Take MxO as an example though.  MxO has "realistic" graphics that look, in many cases, better than what we're seeing in new MMOs and it was made how many years ago now?  Plus, MxO can run on pretty much any PC you can buy now a days, even baseline off the shelf systems (barring the Vista incompatibility situation anyways).  Sure it's got issues of it's own, but using MxO as a baseline we know an MMO with extremely good realistic graphics can be made that can run and run well on almost any PC out there today.

Like I said, I feel your pain on the PC power side of things but choosing cartoony graphics is not a technical choice, it's a stylistic one and something of a cop out.

Ah, okay. I'm sorry for misunderstanding. I started going, "Wait a minute, am I reading this right?". After reading your current post, I do agree with you that MxO does have realistic looking graphics that looks better than most new MMOs to some extent for a three-year-old game.If MxO didn't have its own set of technical problems, I'd definitely agree with you on the "almost any PC can run it" department. As far as cartoony graphics is concerned, I can understand why you dislike it, as I normally hate those myself (namely Wind Waker's cel-shaded art).  As of what I've seen in the recent screenshots, I feel slightly indifferent to the issue, but if it does make the game more playable than a resource-intensive engine (namely the Unreal engine), I'll be content with that if BioWare says it is the only option they have.

And I agree the graphics are a little.. actually a lot of meh at this point.  While I realize "realistic" graphics don't age as well as cartoony graphics, and thus tend to fare better in an MMO due to it's extended creation time and hoped for life length after release, they just don't look very good.  Okay, we get it, it works in WoW, that doesn't mean it's a good design choice.  While MxO isn't anywhere near as popular as it should be, it still looks great even now compared to pretty much any (every?) other MMO out there and *gasp* it has a more realistic graphical style.  Do it right, and you don't need to comprimise.

Shinryu, I hope you're not insinuating that the MMORPG be restricted to only players that have $5,000+ to get a recent top-of-the-line PC hardware compatible with the game.  I mean, I have a three-year-old PC that I spent $4,000 on just to play MxO when it was under Monolith's control, and the recent technical decisions made by the powers that be for MxO really dwarfed my PC in half (i.e. "ZOMG, combine nine small servers into three large ones!" being the main problem), and I am not interested in shelling out a similar amount of money to get another top-of-the-line PC to deal with the pain in the rear  problem that is Windows Vista, and/or suffering with a similar fiasco for the Old Republic should relationships with LucasArts and BioWare get sour. I really want the game to be as accessible as WoW in terms of being able to play the freaking game without having to steal a PC from NASA (I'm looking at FEAR, Company of Heroes, and Crysis for being that problematic). As it is, I've already abandoned PC gaming mainly because of Vista, lack of time for extensive gaming, and money problems.

Mate...
Upgrading your computer is a part of PC gaming.  If you're not willing to deal with that buy a console, it will last you longer.

I'm tired of developers trying to reach a 'larger' group of players because they refuse to upgrade their PC.  If you can't run FEAR at this point in time, you need to upgrade.

I miss the days when games were about innovation, not money and corporate lust for it.  I miss when games pushed to have something new, IE MxO with it's cutting edge realistic graphics, interlock system, and on the fly class changes.  Now they're all 'four button' clones.  WoW has it's piece of the pie, and it can't be bitten into.  I want companies to start pushing the graphics line for MMOs again, like AoC (ran like butter for people who knew what to customize, don't give me that bad engine bs)

Like I said in the begining.  Upgrading your computer is a part of PC gaming.  It has been since the first AGP slot was created.  If you're not willing to fork out the change for your hobby, then play with old toys.  Some of us enjoy progression, not regression.

At the age of 13 and being in eighth grade, I was sleeping in bed when the news got broadcast, then Mom woke me up with a very alarmed tone of voice. As a result of 9/11, Mom made me carry a cell phone just in case of emergencies from that point on. Yes, some classes in school were skipped being spent on the news, and I at one point thought about joining the Marines on the spot, if under-age recruits were allowed that is.

Played Resident Evil since 1998 (beaten Director's Cut, 2, Nemesis, Code Veronica, and 4 for the Gamecube), and I'm ashamed to have owned and beaten the P.O.S. games that were Survivor, Gaiden for the Game Boy Color, and Zero (note. While Zero's quality is top-notch, it added VERY LITTLE to the story's overall plot, and I'd say the same thing for REmake.). I'm looking forward to 5, but I'm afraid that the franchise as a whole is sucked dry, and knowing Capcom, it could end up in the same pits as Mega Man for the sake of cashing in on the franchise. Apparently, proper closure is never part of Capcom's vocabulary as I was not happy with Umbrella's downfall at all (I've watched the playthrough of Umbrella Chronicles, and am glad I didn't waste $200 for a system I'm not going to get that many games for, nor $50 just to play through a on-rails shooter with a lazily designed story) and felt that Capcom just took the lazy way out.

Not sure how many of you are 24 fans, but here is a leaked work in progress trailer of the 24 TV Movie to air on November 23rd. Personally, I'm stoked and I can't wait until 24 finally starts up again.

Lost hope after Season 4. Not sure how much things are going to change at this point. Season 6 sucked. Season 5 tried TOO HARD to be like Season 1, but failed.
How can you say Season 5 tried to be like Season 1? The plots were not even remotely close, and the whole stature of the show was different. In Season 1, the threat was much more local and personal, there wasn't a huge threat. In Season 5, there's was a huge threat, much like those after Season 1. And I dissagree with you on Season 6, but it doesn't seem like you're the kind that can be perssuaded of anything.

Season 5: Plot twists were non-sensical and were just placed in for the sake of shock-value, and multiplied by 100.

Season 6: First four episodes were great. Everything else just went downhill.
I agree that Season 6 went downhill after the first 4 and that it was the worst of the six. I just don't think it sucked. I disagree with you about Season 5, but even if I didn't, I don't really see how that tracks back to Season 1.
Goal of Season 5: "Oh hey, let's try to make Season 5 as great as Season 1 by mimicing Season 1.'s formula!  We're going to one-up Season 1 by adding in a crapload of plot twists and we'll TRY to be as original!" That's what Season 5 was basically about. Plot twists that were originally "good" but that left mixed results: Michelle, Palmer, and Tony getting killed off just for the sake of killing them off; Charles Logan being part of the conspiracy; every CTU character is flat; and then the Season 2-esque finale. Regardless of these twists, it fell into the worst list of cliches possible:

- Incompetent CTU boss
- Government official: "We'll always go against Jack Bauer, despite the fact that we keep repeating mistakes from past Seasons."
- ZOMG, chemical warfare again!
- Jack Bauer ALWAYS saves the day at the cost of his allies' or family's lives.
- Whoever WAS the ally is miraculously the traitor again (Mr. RoboCop anyone?)

Exactly that is the only reason i have faith in this movie Bale usaly only does movies he thinks will be good and look at the movies he has been in i dont recall one bad movie yet.

Bale had two sinkers out of his entire career, and he's not to blame for trying out these projects. Shaft 4, and Equilibrium (not denying Equi's action though.)

  Cons:

- Written and directed by the crew responsible for Catwoman
- PG-13 rating
- Possible questionable cinematography.

Addendum

- Director was also responsible for Charlie's Angels.
The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion Max Payne Re:Max Payne Canbus 0 07/10/2008 19:56
My hopes aren't too high for these three reasons:

1. PG-13 rating: Almost every Hollywood PG-13 movie (except for Pirates of the Carribean, Star Wars Episode 3, and Lord of the Rings) since 2001 royally sucked. Jet Li's The One left a lot to be desired.  Aliens Versus Predator 1 sucked badly by being neutered. Die Softly (my insult for Die Hard 4) sucked because it ended up on the same boat as Aliens Versus Predator, especially when it had Bruce Willis resort to dodging cars literally flying at him, or climbing an in-flight fighter jet.  Max Payne was notorious for an M-rating, and it shouldn't have to be neutered just for the sake of "broadening the audience."

2. Game characters are replaced by movie original characters for no justifiable reason. Other than Lupino getting a larger role, Woden, Puchinello, and Vlad are removed from the script, and so far, there are rumors that Robin (i.e. Chris O'Donnell) is going to be replacing Woden's role as Max's informant about the Nicole Horne arc.

3. It's made by the guy that made Behind Enemy Lines. Behind Enemy Lines was average, or below average at best not only in terms of story (I expected a Metal Gear-style infiltration focusing on saving Owen Wilson, rather than focusing the entire movie on Owen Wilson getting out of the area.), but the action felt too half-assed on the same level as S.W.A.T. (i.e. All Serbian Troopers are as bad as standard issue Stormtroopers from the Star Wars franchise).

Good thing I'm staying away then. I've played Battlefield 2 for the PC, but stopped at Lance Corporal due to how unorganized the game was with the playlists. Seriously, no friends or buddy lists? I've been constantly partnered up with **jerks** and ****heads, not to mention EA's servers have been known to royally **** up on me regardless of how good my internet connection and my hardware is.
The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion Call of Duty 5: World at War Re:Call of Duty 5: World at War Canbus 0 06/23/2008 21:56
Skipping. I wasted my Mom's 40 bucks on Call of Duty 3, and it did not stand up to Call of Duty 1, United Offensive, 2, or 4 in any way whatsoever. I read EGM's average reviews, and agree with every word of it. They also hit the nail of the head with "uninspired campaign." The campaign was abysmally so average that it was forgettable at best compared to its successors and predecessors. I had no sympathy for any of the allied NPCs whatsoever, even if it involved Call of Duty veterans like Major Ingram.  I'll get Call of Duty 6 instead, thanks.

Anyone hoping for a clone of the clone?

donno if you played MGS4, but Its mentioned Snake/Liquid cant be cloned as they were only designed for battle and War so there genes were changed incase they were ever captured and and the enemy try to make clones of them that it wouldnt be possible so there wont be any clones of the clones. Yet if they make another MGS im hoping its on the very orginals "Metal Gear" and "Metal Gear 2" where you were have ment to kill Big Boss and Gray Fox

Johnny, you'd have to buy Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence if you want to play the first two Metal Gear games.
The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion Halo Wars... RTS meets FPS! Re:Halo Wars... RTS meets FPS! Canbus 0 06/07/2008 13:46
Gamepro just did an extensive article on the Halo Wars game on their recent issue, and Ensemble found it to be a challenge to streamline the game. So far, the game will be fast paced like its FPS counterparts (setting up for battle takes ten seconds instead of the usual 30-minute set up and the like), and resources are found in the form of gathering supply crates with a Warthog (not sure how many crates are available.). From Gamepro's playtime with the game, it's easy to pick up.

Attack system: Primary and Secondary attack similar to Company of Heroes. Example: Primary attack has Marines firing their assault rifles, while secondary attack allows them to use grenades. Warthog's primary attack would be the turret, while secondary would be running over said target.

UNSC Units:

Confirmed:

SPARTAN-IIs (clad in MJLONIR Mark IV armor [shield-less variant], can auto-heal. Currently working on balance).
Marines
Flamethrower Marines
Warthogs
Scorpion Tanks
Elephant (big vehicle from Halo 3 multiplayer)
Hornets

New units:

Wolverines (anti-air)
Cobra (Artillery)
Cyclops (heavy mech that's anti-building)
Vulture (heavy gunship)

Covenant units:

Grunts
Hunters
Ghosts
Banshees
Jackals
Elites
Scarabs
.

Control scheme so far (subject to change):

Left bumper: Select all units on screen
Left bumper x2: Select all units in the entire map
Left Trigger+ Left stick: Move camera fast
Right Trigger: Modify (queing waypoints for squad movement)
Right bumper: Cycle through groups of units in current location

A: Select a unit (hold down to "paint select" squads)
B. Cancel
X: Move/Gather/Primary Attack
Y: Secondary Attack

Right Stick: Rotate/Zoom Camera

Back button: Objectives
Start: Ingame menu and options

That looked more like a budget thing than a censorship thing to me. They still showed blood, they just didn't show the action sequence. Personally, I love the way it was handled, leaves you wondering exactly how it went down. And the Johnny Cash song worked really well.

I'm just having a hard time buying it, but it is a matter of taste. Just my IMO, but I really don't think the Johnny Cash song worked well with the finale, it could have been better used on a psycho killer movie or something. SMILEY

Uh, Canbus, that many if not more were killed in the course of 3 minutes in one episode of Sarah Connor.

Don't be a smartass

And you just lack common sense, imax. 24 had these following things:

1. Government employees killed left and right, both straight and corrupt. Should be in their high seventies by now
2. Over a hundred civilians dead from an anthrax-like virus over the course of four to five episodes(Season 3)
3. One government agent dying from radiation poisoning (Season 2)
4. Three to four dozen L.A.P.D. officers killed as a plot direction total
5. Two nuclear explosions, one of the more notable attacks being detonated in a populated Valencia (Season 6. Season 2 was non-consequential).
6. Suspects being tortured both conventially and unconventially

So much for your FCC rules.

Regardless, the censor was unnecessary especially if it's a TV adaptation of R-rated movies, considering it was a regular shootout (i.e. No Terminatrix plasma cannons involved), regardless of terrorists or law enforcement being on the receiving end of things.

About *CENSORED* time. Please stop censoring certain scenes from the finale (i.e. Ellison and F.B.I. S.W.A.T. versus Cromartie), as a Terminator fan, this really insulted our intelligence. 24 was just as violent, but didn't pull back the punches on the firefights and torture scenes.

my view on this is jaded.

it comes from the early days of live. Many pe's were just self serving events to further a specific group, faction, person, etc. rather than to tell an intriguing story and help the community/game.  just my opinion but one i feel was backed well. eventually it got to where i didnt even care to look at what was going on.

the leg10n vs prophet of the martyrs pe was a lot of fun because it was kept quiet and simple. few outside factions knew of or were involved in it. it easily kept 25 or so of us occuppied for an evening and it led to my eventual fall from zion and re-birth in leg10n. the problem being, it could not have been done as well or been so easily adaptable on the fly if it had been org wide or involved massive amounts of people. and roleplaying a zion spy caught invading a machine meeting was just too much fun

the other side of it:

i still remember when player actions did change the storyline. small events could happen at any time of the day or night on more than one server at a time. maybe frag collecting during big events sucked but at least an org had a chance to change things and maybe the shapers event didnt matter as much in the long run but at least some org had to take the win. maybe neurophyte was a LET creation but at least it came from the top and was open ended enough to feel like it mattered. once things like that were left behind, for good, the entirety of the story lost some meaning for me. now it was just any other game

over time, i have come to enjoy the story again and even tried to get back in to the roleplay circles but the final problem with the rp is elitism. wear the wrong tag for a few months/years and people will not work with you. not jumping into "their style of rp" and they will ignore you or push you off. and then lesig is and will always have corruption tied to this elitism. yes, i did benefit from such things as well. leg10n got to be the first to say anome was a villian and i jumped at the chance to share that with the community. and maybe leg10n used some insider info to get back at some elitist machines, talk about player events gone wrong woooha, but it just goes to show that any player event can be suspect while a live event is by design to be the story.

it just an issue that cant be resolved without financial investment from sony to bring in more LET and give the players back the game and let the professionals entertain us. player events would actually gain more meaning with a larger scale story evolving before our eyes again and not just coming up like messages in a fax machine. it would provide a sturdier backdrop to build pes within and help eliminate two years of rp going down the drain over a technicality. it would also give more options for let at pe's. which in the early days was truly amazing to have a random party and someone "famous" walk in. especially when it happened to more than just the large favorite factions.

Did not mean to necro the topic, but I completely forgot to mention the elitism into my list of problems, and you pretty much said it for me, Davo. "RP my way, or it's the highway" mentality already made me stop participating in player-made RP altogether unless I was asked by friends to show up for their event. Other than B3AR, who was cool with the RP /tells he sent me, none of the Tetra members were welcoming when it came to players from other organizations attempting to RP with the Tetragrammation faction. To be more specific, Beachhead was notorious for doing this repeatedly, which made me disgusted.

Depends on the audiences' taste. I really didn't like the song and found it that it just added insult to injury when it came to filming the F.B.I. raid(i.e. "We'll just record S.W.A.T. agents drowning in their own pool of blood in a swimming pool."SMILEY<img mce_tsrc=" />  I also never expected the raid to happen fifteen minutes before the show ended only for it to last literally two minutes especially with how the trailer built up on it. you can't show that kinda violence on a prime time tv show man...  thats what movies are for.
Uh, Cromartie (villain terminator) shot said agents with regular firearms, not Terminatrix plasma cannons, so why did they have to censor that? After all, it was rated TV-14. 24 had government agents *AND* terrorists shot on-screen with shootouts.
