The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion diference between japanese and western heroes Re:diference between japanese and western heroes TheEx 0 01/21/2008 13:38
Someone already said it, and it's culture.  Our culture idolizes the traditional Stalone type character, the typical steroid enhanced MANLY man.  I think we do this because we have always held the idea that strength comes from physical perfection.  Eastern cultures often rely more heavily on the whole inner strength thing, mostly because of their religious beliefs I would assume.  So when you look at it, their heroes don't have to be that statuesque muscle bound idiot that Western heroes almost always have to be.  Of course there are always exceptions, like Gatts or Riki-Oh for example (great, ridiculously powerful Japanese heroes) and...well come to think of it I can't think of any non-muscle bound bad-asses in western culture, except for like spider-man or batman, and even they are always portrayed as ridiculously well built, just not as broad shouldered or bulky.

The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion Assassin's Creed. Re:Assassin's Creed. TheEx 0 11/24/2007 20:18
Just finished the game, got it Wednesday.  Overall impression is good, graphics are awesome except for some of the clipping issues and framerate hiccups that have already been mentioned here.  These would normally be forgiveable offenses considering the overall ridiculousness of the graphics engine, however, why if they did such an awesome job on the textures and fluidity of the movements did they skimp on the little stuff?  Aside from that the story is quite interesting including the portions that have to deal with our future.  There is some serious replay value, and the cryptic weirdness at the end of the game is wide open for a sequel, whether it be set in maiyan times or feudal southern japan.  Intersting split there eh?

Either way, this game was pretty awesome compared to some other stuff out for PS3 right now.
The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion Dragonball Live Action Movie has a "Green Light" RUN!!! Re:Dragonball Live Action Movie has a "Green Light" RUN!!! TheEx 0 11/24/2007 20:04
Well, here's my input.  I'm a pretty diehard DBZ fan, it was the first serial anime that I ever watched, and though it has it's downfalls no one can argue that its pretty damned epic when it comes right down to it.  I think I'm with the general consesus that this will either be amazing, or awful.  Both would be acceptable because sometimes things can be so bad their good simply for the amusement factor, and amazing is well...amazing right?

I think the technology exists for them to do it right as stated earlier, however, will they have the budget/vision to get the job done?  Personally I'm going to have issues with the fact that the voices won't be the same.  Of course, if you're a fan of the japanese subs then the voices won't matter much to you since everyone in the original sounds like a twelve year old girl anyways.  One of the only anime's in all of time that I have ever enjoyed the english dubs over the japanese originals.  The voices for the show were so good, to me at least, that hearing anyone else's voice (especially Piccolo) as any of the main characters is going to be strange.  Which means the rest of the movie is going to have to be fairly mind boggling for me to get behind it.

Either way, terrible or epic, I'll certainly go to see it.

Thanks to rare for that second little trick, I'll mess around with that a bit and see what I get.  I've actually been working on this idea for a while, I'm trying to create a graphic novel mixing real life shots with in game shots, and I'm trying to find a good way to make the real shots look more inked, while still trying to mesh it well with in-game shots.

Community Residual Self-Image Tutorials Re:Tutorials TheEx 0 11/07/2007 12:22
This is more of a question than a request as I know the process is quite complicated.  I was wondering if anyone has tips on vectoring images, an example would be taking a normal photograph or in game screen shot and turning it into a drawn image of itself.  If anyone saw A Scanner Darkly, that's kind of what I'm talking about, only with stills and not moving footage.  I already know how to use vectors and the ilk, but being a working man with a kid it's quite hard for me to really spend the amount of time necessary to produce good results with that method.  I was just wondering if anyone knew of any good shortcuts or tricks to speed up the process, or perhaps a nice alternative.

The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion The next Spiderman Villian Re:The next Spiderman Villian TheEx 0 05/03/2007 23:53
Hmm...I like carnage quite a bit actually, and the doppleganger as well.  However, if they do the doppleganger they'll probably have to go into the whole man-spider thing where spiderman mutates into a freaky spider monster.  Carnage hower...very cool, and fits along with the current storyline nicely, being as he is created through a piece of the venom parasite.  If they keep going with the goblin theme I sure wish they'd throw the Hobgoblin in there, though he isn't really relevant to the story I suppose.

I think when it comes down to it, there are so many spiderman villians, its tough to say who ought to get top billing as the next major spidey villian.

((why not...I hope no one minds if I play along.))

His vision is blurred and the swimming sensation in his head only just matches the pain his body is feeling.  Like being hit by a car perhaps, or some other equally violent collision of flesh and steel.  Staggering his way forward he makes out the simple outline of a city phone booth a wry smile slips over his face, but makes him grimace.  Christ...he thinks to himself, his whole body feels pain, even smiling hurts now.

The sensation is still strange, looking down at his hands, but realizing that they aren't his anymore, looking around to see the same places he has always seen, but realizing and understanding that these are not the same places.  Still moving forward, inching towards the phone booth, his heart rate is erratic, but none of that matters now.  This backwards hell he has fought so hard to be a part of, the strange face he sees when staring into a mirror, the terrible pain, none of it matters.  The phone booth is closer, almost within reach, if he can jack out then he can rest, its time to rest, he doesn't belong here and the system knows it.

F**k...he said it would hurt...but this much?  Muttering more to himself than anyone else in ear shot, stumbling he finally puts one hand on the glass of the phone booth, sliding the door open and stepping inside he slumps against the side wall and picks up the reciever.

Get me out of here...listen I don't care, the system knows, I have to get out of here.  No, I'll come back it isn't that, this body isn't as strong as it needs to be, I need to rest.    No, I understand my obligations, but I can't keep searching if I'm dead now can I?  Now get me out of here.  The building at the end of the block?  5th floor second room down...got it, thanks.

He slams the reciever down on the hook and pain shoots up his arm from the action, damning nothing imparticular he stumbles his way out of the phone booth and nearly falls over, having to prop himself against it for a moment.  There is a woman and a child on the sidewalk, walking along they stop to stare for a moment, he gives them the finger and whinces a bit the mother ushers the child on.

D**n people...mind your own business!

Regaining his composure a bit he stumbles off towards the exit he was given, muttering to himself the whole way, looking up at the sky only once as he approached the apartment building.

You're out there, I know you are, and I'll find you.  I've been to hell and back to find you...and I never lose.

The Lounge Matrix Universe The bonds of Kin Re:The bonds of Kin TheEx 0 04/26/2007 02:30
I think this depends upon how detailed the machines have been with their genetic engineering.  Seeing as that they had the entirety of the original human race to work with, they have a pretty decent template of DNA to mess around with.  I think it is entirely possible for them to create families of people (probably put in the same pod sections) for no other reason than to make the simulation itself more believable on a subconscious level.  If they chose to go a different route and simply alter your RSI's appearance/mannerisms then they could make families infinitely, and yea when you got the redpill you would cease to resemble your family physically, but the emotional bonds would still be there I would think.

The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion Fascist America, in 10 easy steps Re:Fascist America, in 10 easy steps TheEx 0 04/25/2007 23:54
All I can say about this is that every country is vulnerable should they be targeted by outside guerilla fighters.  America just happens to put itself in the lime-light being as our worldwide reputation is basically for sucks, since our government can't seem to keep from f'ing things up royally every single chance they get.

I won't hold any punches on this topic and I'll flat out say that I have absolutely no patriotism or faith whatsoever for my country of origin, and I cannot blame any other country for their distaste of US foreign politics.  Obviously, I don't condone killing in any way, certainly not in the name of justice, rightousness, or any other foolishly idealistic cause.  I'm just saying that as we continue to be the worlds police (regardless of what the rest of the world says about it) we continue to make ourselves targets.

As far as an apocolyptic future is concerned, my vote goes to zombies.  Seriously, at least a terrible zombie apocolypse is potentially survivable.  All the same, I'm sure man will eventually destroy himself, its pretty much written in stone.  Man is destructive by nature, when the time comes, I'm sure America won't be the only one to hit the floor.

So it has finally come to this, how I've had to run, how I've had to hide infuriates me to no end but  if I want to continue fighting for it, then I had to.  I had no other choice but to sell my soul to the devil himself, at least the devil pays well.  The procedure nearly killed me, in fact I'm quite amazed that I'm still alive, there apparently was some strength left in this body of mine after all.  I've been assured that the location is secure, and that now I have a connection that bridges between the two, allowing me access to both; I am uncertain as to whether or not I trust or believe this...but I've little choice in the matter anyways.  I have noted upon jacking in that I am considerably weaker, this was an expected turn of events however annoying it may be, but it leaves me vulnerable none the less so I must lay low until I've had enough time to recover my full strength.

During this period, hopefully things will blow over a bit, and they'll stop looking for me with such dedication.  Still, I cannot stay in the shadows forever, there will come a time when I must act, but I can play it nice with the Devil for now, a little more blood on my hands means next to nothing to me afterall.  The things I've done to come this far...well, I'll just say there isn't much chance of redemption for me anytime soon.  I leave this message more for myself than anyone else, as I doubt anyone will take note and this will be lost in the see of public entries that come everyday over the mainframe.  That is fine by me, I'd rather make as little of a splash as I can, but still...I feel the need to say something, anything just to help myself rationalize this decision.  I suppose now you could say that I've been reborn, given a second chance in a loosely metaphoric sense of that phrase.  I now have the opportunity to move unhindered by the prying eyes of that iminant doom.  I'll take that opportunity and run with it, but in memory of the things that I have given up, and the things that have been taken from me I adopt my new visage.  My new persona, in honor of my old, has a special name and we'll just wait and see who notices, wait and see....that should be my new motto.  My time is up, there are matters that require my attention elsewhere, but just as before, I'll be watching.
