The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion Battlestar Galactica Season 4. /posible spoilers and stuff Re:Battlestar Galactica Season 4. /posible spoilers and stuff 1sultrybytes 0 04/02/2008 14:41

BSG used to be the best show out there. Season 1 and 2 (well, til black market) were frakking awesome. Show is still capable of being good (see razor), but I've been very disappointed with it the past season. The plots were predictable, poorly written, and really stunted the momentum gained during the first two seasons (as was the ungodly wait between seasons). The final straw was the 'revelation' of the 4 cylons at the end of season 3

I like that the show takes risks, but unlike the first couple seasons, a lot of the risks in season 3 were detrimental to the show. I've really lost my enthusiasm with the direction the show has taken, and that's sad.

I still like the show, and I'll be watching season 4 in hopes it returns to the quality of season 1.

As far as the last cylon, I know it's too obvious, but as someone else said, leoben told roslyn that adama was a cylon. They might as well just destroy the last vestiges of credibility and make lee or bill adama a cylon leoben said.

The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion Buying/making a computer Re:Buying/making a computer 1sultrybytes 0 04/02/2008 14:28

i recently faced this decision myself. I spent weeks researching the pros of building one (or having a friend build it) vs buying a complete system.

Some benefits of building yourself are cheaper components, being able to customize to get exactly what you want, assuring the assembly is done with care because you're doing it yourself, knowing exactly what brand of components are being used, and savinge money on build costs and all that...but....

you are also in for some headaches...

you need to really do your homework to make sure everything is compatable with each other. You might get sent some bad components and have to go through some headaches with RMAs. You have to figure out how much cooling you need...as well as what cases are good as well as making sure all your parts fit in it. You'll also have to do the OS installation (shouldn't be bad) but also making sure of bios updates and proper drivers. Not to mention..it's your butt if you frak up while assembling this thing. A big issue (at least to me...and reason why I bought a build system).  warrantly. Yes, each part has a limited warranty for a year, but if you're not good at the whole build/updating thing, being able to pick up the phone and having someone else deal with the headache is good.

In the end, I decided to pay a little bit more (hell, when you have no $$$, what's a little more of it?) and bought a system from dell. They have some high quality, gaming specific computers now. They've also having some decent price discounts now, as well as a spring sale. I actually got a 2nd video card for free the day I ordered.

Summary: if you have the skills to build and know what to use...or if you have a friend who's willing to take that responsibility as well as the responsibility for being the first avenue when things go wrong, build it. If you don't have the skills, don't have someone who's willing to be your fix it person, and want a simplier solution, get one built.

my two cents anyway.

I can't say that I am surprised by a lot of this. There is some good and bad.

I haven't liked the cinematics since they switched from the original format, so no loss there for me.

I think the sentinel coming back could do some good things.

When I see cost cutting moves, as some of this is, I get nervous, but even if this game only lasts another year, it would have lasted longer than I've thought in my darker moments.

The game has perservered through a lot. Missteps at release, lagouts at the original live events, being taken over by SOE, loss of so many players, staff turnover, the lack of resources.

We still have a committed core player base, LESIG, and the efforts of the SOE members charged with this game. I appreciate everyone's efforts, am looking forward to the anniversary event and hope good things happen in the next year.

yes, this is an excellent plot development. I too have not been all that enthused when in the game of late, this ups the stakes and makes things very very interesting.

1) Not getting into the beta until the last couple months

2) Hurrying to level 50

3) Not being able to participate in live and LESIG events as much as I'd like.

Think you've got what it takes to hang with the Sirens? Then compile your best outfit and take your turn on the catwalk... er stage. We will be choosing winners from the following categories:

Best formal outfit - Male
Best formal outfit - female
Best rockin (casual/party) outfit - Male
Best rockin (casual/party) outfit - Female

Event is to be held Saturday August 5th at 3pm eastern at Club Avalon.

Terms and conditions below...please read carefully

I. Participation
To make sure this event doesn't take all day, we are aiming to limit participation to 40 contestants* (that breaks down to 10 per category). This may change, but no promises so please register early.

II. Entry Fee
The entry fee is 1 million $info for each spot. The same RSI can compete in both the formal and casual categories, but that constitues two spots, and the entry fee will need to be paid for both (ie the charge would be 2 million to compete in both categories)

III. Nature of Competition
Each contestant will get 30 seconds on stage to display their outfit. Note: This is NOT a talent contest. We are not looking for skits or entertainment. Winners will be judged solely on the outfits they are wearing. We will try to work on a list of what categories go with what, but no promises on that. Generally, use common sense. Formal wear for male would include ties, for example.

 NUDITY is not a fashion!

IV. How to Enter
INdicate your intention to  compete by posting a reply in this thread with the following information:

Your RSI Name:
Your RSI Gender:
Which category(s) you wish to compete in:

Participants will be contacted by in-game email to confirm entry and to obtain the entry fee.

V. Prizes
Top 3 finishers in each category will get a cash prize:

1st place: 20 million
2nd place: 10 million
3rd place: 5 million

VI. Event day
Entrants should arrive at club avalon 30 minutes before the contest starts.

i'm glad these are starting again. Just a heads up. the registration function on your website forums is not working. I tried to register early in the week to ask for the 4/21 interview and was not able to create an account. I sent an email to the address you indicated as well, but did not receive a response.

I'll check back in this thread and see if there has been any response. We are very interested in scheduling an appointment for an interview. Thanks.

yeah, i've been hoping for this too. It's kind of a chicken/egg phenomenon. I want to thank satta, sugar, and the rest who worked so hard for this event. I do know how much work these things take, and i appreciate the effort they make to keep the MxO community active and interesting. Cheers to everyone. It is a stressful and thankless job. It quite frankly pains me to have to say anything negative to say about it, but I wouldn't be fair to myself if I didn't voice my opinion.

The event was great, the organization good, and the patience of the organizers with idiots who try to ruin events was admirable. That being said.... I have issues with the judging...serious issues. I realize it is a thankless job and tough to choose, but some of the choices that were made seriously confuse me. It has been confirmed that performance was definately an influence in who moved on to the final 6 pairs. It was quite shocking to hear we didn't make it, and also to see some of the others who didn't make it.

Again, thanks to those who organized this, and sorry to **bleep**, but I did have to post my agreement with those who had some questions about the judging.

if they are refunding the $info, they should refund the frags, or give us more, or make them super super easy to get for a period after release. I am definately concerned about the frag issue.
Archived Forums External Playtest Discussion Complete stat reset Re: Complete stat reset 1sultrybytes 0 02/11/2006 16:28

when the revisions go live, we definately need to have all stats available. Resetting them to base is good, but not enough. AS everyone has said, there was very poor communication as to what did what even when the game went live, and the prevailing opinions were that it really didn't matter cause of the buff clothing.

Now that stat allocation has become much more important, those extra stats that were "Tossed away" when we created are characters can mean the difference between an effective buildout and someone who will always be at a signifcant disadvantage.

It has been stated that it would be a tremendous amount of work to implement that, but it still MUST be done in my opinion. I dont' think it is fair that all of us have to recreate chracters and spend months grinding it back out to 50 to get a true stat reset.
