The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion Origin of "I blame Keith"? Re:Origin of "I blame Keith"? Stack 0 06/03/2009 05:01

As far as I know, the "I blame Keith" thing has always been an MxO inside joke. Then again, I've thought that a lot of Internet memes were local to the MxO community, like the whole Mudkipz thing.

Ok, so this is a big one, Reinsertion.  Was Rarebit going to leave it as "Reinsertion was a lie" or was there going to be more to it?

This one really bugged me, and I made sure I let Rarebit know. Even as an EPN player on my main, I've always thought the Cypherites were one of the best parts of the story, and while removing reinsertion as a viable option did have the useful effect of making them even more pissed off than they already were, I thought it went too far in pissing them off for real as players. People had already incorporated reinsertion into some of their backstories, and I saw it as just one more stupid restriction that limited what people could do with their characters.

The big issue I had with it was that Rarebit was basing his decision predominantly on what he picked up on from the first film, that the agents never had any intention of reinserting Cypher at all, and that the "continue as planned, deploy the sentinels" line indicated that they had planned on destroying the Neb even if Cypher was still alive inside.

I also had issues with an in-game mission or two that I believe involved reinsertion. Rare pointed out that there was still no indication that the machines planned to go through with it, and that the apprehension of the bluepill involved only further confirmed that he would probably just be killed, rather than reinserted, and that such was more befitting of the machine M.O.

I'd be willing to take any content people send my way for archival. I'll also do my best to save as much as possible, with what little time I have these days.

Community General Discussion LESIGS Re:LESIGS Stack 0 06/01/2009 01:34

I'll go ahead and say outright that I was in LESIG, one of the first set. A couple people knew the entire time, since we didn't immediately set down the secrecy rules, and there were of course the inevitable leaks. I won't post my characters here yet, since I still have plans for them that I (hopefully) have time to play out before the servers are closed. The liaison I did play had many secrets that, sadly, never really got revealed to more than a handful, if any. If I ever get around to writing and posting my full MxO fan fic novel, I'll include the various LESIG characters I played to provide their full backstory, but for now... there are a few secrets I hope to reveal in-game during what little time we have left.

I do want to apologize for letting my involvement in the program lapse. I was spread very, very thin as I was finishing my senior year of college and it got to the point where I didn't even care enough to let anyone know I was done. I still haven't fully picked MxO back up ever since.

I will, however, also relate possibly the most hilarious series of incidents I ever saw in MxO, and while it wasn't directly in the course of my LESIG operations, the true scope of it involved some behind-the-scenes knowledge. Someone on the LESIG forums (I think it was Harkee) posted an anecdote about how Dibol, my trigger-happy factionmate, had been powerlevelling her. In the course of this operation, a hostile landed a shot that made the stability of Dibol's pants fail. He ended up fighting in his undies in front of a Zion liaison officer. He promptly apologized and assured her it wouldn't happen again.

Cut to the next day when I'm on my public main, chatting with Wolfess about how hilarious that was. Dibol and I start running archive missions to get me the agent sunglasses, and we're blasting our way through hostiles left and right. I come under heavy fire, and as I'm running my arse out of the mission area to the elevator, one of the hostile NPCs landed a final shot on me and--you guessed it--my pants disappeared. Not my coat, not my famous purple vest... my pants. My pants disappear the very next day after Dibol's pants disappeared in front of a liaison, while I, secretly, am privvy to this information. I'm busy laughing my arse off and trying to find some replacement pants, all the while hollering tells to Wolfess along the lines of "OMG MY PANTS FELL OFF!! RIGHT IN FRONT OF DIBOL!!" I slip up and post the phrase "YES, RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE EFFING ELEVATOR!" into team chat.... Dibol gets suspicious, finds me and asks if everything's all right. I'm standing there in a completely different pair of pants, apologizing for a mistell, and saying, "...Please... don't ask."

What killed me was I couldn't explain the coincidence of the situation to him, or to anybody. But I still can't help but giggle at the entire situation.

And by our usual recording session standards, this one went much smoother than usual (especially considering we were taking a shot every time we goofed up >_>).

Greetings, MxO, and long time no see. I've been on a bit of a hiatus for the last few months, and during that time I've been helping to produce a weekly radio-drama-esque production called Fan Fiction Mystery Theatre. Each week we take the worst best fan fiction that this series of tubes has to offer and present dramatic readings to our faithful listeners.

Now that the show has some experience under its belt, we felt it was high time that we produce a rendition of the work that first sparked our inspiration: The Matrix Return, by the worst writer ever acclaimed fan fiction author Peter Chimaera. As it was only through this community that I ever found this literary gem, I thought it only fitting that I return the favor for you all.

Huge thanks to Starschwar for first posting the link to the YTMND here several years ago. If it weren't for that, Fan Fiction Mystery Theatre never would've existed in the first place.

Removal of LESIG i for know lesig had its leaks and a few of the liasons were just plain rubbish for many reasons. but there have been a few things that have hooked me to a story line here and there.  For one the thermal image fragment story and the 01 mainframe with LESIG gone does this mean this will stop becuase i think we still need a long projected mystery to sole to give those willing to delve deeper a chance.  Also with LESIG gone what happens to Scanline and The Sentinall.  A month or two ago now it was adertised that BA 52 was coming yet we have not seen anything since i guess with the disolution of LESIG this will never come now.

I agree with the Live event changes because they were becoming very samey with the go here do this talk to him/her hack a server meet at a club.  so it will be a fresh change but i do think that it should be mixed up a little now and then.

Rarebit if you read this can you answe these 3 questions as the future of these items was neglected from your post

 What happens to the Sentinal?

What happens to the 01mainframe?

What happens to Scanline?

Basically i still hold a little faith even though your basically screwing my sub org, i just want to know if these deeper plot lines will continue or if they are being removed with the rest of LESIG

Definately things that needs to be addressed in my opinion.
I think you guys misunderstood what Rarebit meant. He said the liaisons would no longer be in play as officers. He never said anything about disbanding LESIG entirely. It sounds to me like they'll still be around, helping out with planning events and such, but they won't be performing their role as liaisons. LESIG's side projects like the Sentinel and Scanline will probably be continued.
Development Discussion Development Roundtable A New Approach Re:A New Approach Stack 0 10/10/2008 02:30
High **** time, that's what I have to say about this.

Don't get me wrong--I love LESIG and what they were able to do, but they've done their job in keeping the game afloat, and they've run their course. The live events system in this game got into a rut a long time ago, and it was a strain on everyone to keep it going. Like Rarebit said, it just got to be exhausting keeping track of what happens when it's split across each server and org, and it shouldn't be our job to sort through mountains of summaries and screenshots and transcripts just to figure out what the hell is going on.

I'm sure many of the liaisons will choose to stick around and keep up some of their activities--the hovercraft battles, especially, I don't think will be anywhere near the first to go.

The EPN / CYPH tag issue... it's always seemed kind of half-assed anyway. Besides, anyone who really cares about the splinter groups should know that they were meant to be more clandestine and underground, and parading your affiliation is mostly just to know who to snipe in PVP. I think this will reintroduce more of the top-secret, sneaking around kind of operation for these orgs. As it was, they ended up being just a second copy of their main orgs, just with slightly more rambunctious live events.

The cinematics... sound a little iffy. I'm willing to give Rarebit a chance, considering how good of an artist he is, but not having sound / dialogue will really kill it for me. I'm sure someone in the community will throw together versions with voice acting, but as with many things in this game, it shouldn't be up to us to do that.

Parties sound good, the live events have been too stressful... frequent mini-events, I think, might encourage people to be on more... gang boss RSI thingies... meh... always nice to have fun options like that available, but kind of random to throw into this list of other major changes.

Mostly for the better, I'd say. I look forward to seeing how this all works out, and I might actually get back into the game a bit more, rather than just poking my head in for the criticals.
The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion Speed Racer? Re:Speed Racer? Stack 0 05/11/2008 03:43
Just saw this today with a group of friends, and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. No headaches, but we were unable to focus on one particular object for a good hour or so afterwards because of the crazy super-in-focus filming technique they used.

I was quite impressed with how much Wachowski-ness worked its way in. There was a chase / fight sequence a little ways in that ended up being a brief combination of the lobby shootout plus the freeway chase. It also had lots of hokey great kung-fu sequences, some of which almost seemed to show signs of bullet time. They also really pushed the boundaries of the PG rating with the violence and language, even going so far as to bleep out a "Holy ****!" line.

As far as the race sequences, they were hundreds of times crazier than I first expected when I heard the Wachowskis were doing a racing movie.
Being able to get away with letting it look computer generated helped a lot, as they were able to go all-out on the animé visual style. I have to wonder if they spent most of their preproduction time playing F-Zero GX and Mario Kart, especially considering some of the ridiculous weapons and upgrades the cars use against each other for the cross-country race.

All in all, don't take it too seriously and you'll enjoy it a lot.
The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion Speed Racer? Re:Speed Racer? Stack 0 04/28/2008 00:54
From what I understand, they're trying a radical camera technique that involves keeping most or all of the fields of view in each shot in focus, which is normally not practical with a film camera. They're trying to emulate the crisp everything-in-focus appearance that cartoons have (though keeping some shots with blurry backgrounds, since some cartoons are drawn that way intentionally).

The acting, on the other hand, looks corny as all hell, but I guess they're trying to base that off the original cartoon, too >_>

I haven't quite determined all the strengths / weaknesses, but here's what I've seen so far (and I may be drastically wrong on some of these SMILEY):

Returning characters that seem a little stronger / easier to use:
  • Mario
  • Weegee (aka Luigi)
  • Kirby
  • Bowser
  • Zelda / Sheik
Returning characters that got hit with the nerf stick and are either weaker or slower:
  • Samus -- not as maneuverable, and her mid-air basic kick attack doesn't own nearly as much as it used to. She more than makes up for her loss of speed once she's out of her varia suit, though, and her hyper beam final smash also rocks.
  • Link -- not really tremendously weaker, but he's no longer the cheapass ownage machine he used to be amongst the newcomers.
  • Peach -- her butt-attack doesn't explode anymore >_> and also, her final smash is nearly worthless compared to most of the others.
New characters who are cheap / powerful / etc.
  • Pit -- effectively has twice the recovery ability of Kirby: he can fly by jumping multiple times, and can then fly again with Up+B multiple times. His attacks / defense are a bit weak, though.
  • Ike -- frikkin' awesome, albeit a bit slow. His battle cry with his Up+B move terrifies me every time I hear it and makes up for mid-puberty Roy's corny voice from Melée.
  • Meta Knight -- combination of Kirby and Link FTW
New characters that take some getting used to but pwn once you've got the hang of them:
  • Snake -- very slow, and has some awkward moves, but his final smash involves hanging from a helicopter and blasting the soup out of everyone with a grenade launcher (and yes, you get to aim)
  • Sonic -- Almost too fast to handle
  • Pokémon Trainer -- some of the attacks that the three different Pokémon have are really useful, but it can be awkward switching between them
Characters new and old who are meh:
  • DK -- too slow and still doesn't really make up for it
  • Lucas -- a total clone of Ness and not really giving much new
  • Olimar -- really awkward to learn how to use his pikmin in battle
  • Diddy Kong -- much faster than DK, but nothing special in terms of power
  • Captain Falcon -- not really a meh character, but I'm putting him here simply because his final smash is hard to connect with and only involves hitting your opponent with the Blue Falcon, when really I was expecting something more like this

Man, I still can't get over how ridiculous that Metroid audio track is... "SAMUS IS UNDER FIRE! SHE IS SENDING AN EMERGENCY DIRECTIVE! JOIN THE FIGHT!"

I mean, seriously, when would Samus ever be under fire without kicking just as much @$$ in return? And when has she ever sent out a distress call? It's always the wimpy federation troopers under fire and sending out an "emergency directive," and Samus flying in and blowing everything to ****.
The Lounge Off-Topic Discussion Super Smash Brothers brawl Re:Super Smash Brothers brawl Stack 0 03/09/2008 04:53
It'll take a while to unlock the hidden characters to find out for sure, but so far, Ness and Lucas are carbon copies of each other.

My roomie, my best friend, and myself all gave it a thorough initiation for about two hours, and I've gotta say it has exceeded my expectations, which were already high. The returning characters all feel like they've been toughened up and polished, and the new characters... well, they'll take a lot of getting used to. The stages are absolutely beautiful (especially the Final Destination... best background ever).

The most noticeable innovation has to be the ridiculous amount of customization, what with each stage having a good half-dozen different music tracks that you can tweak, and especially the stage building feature. We already have a stage built with spikes, ice, and various other platforms thrown together and it worked surprisingly well.

The only complaint I have is that the Japanese still do not understand Metroid at all. Samus, who has always been my best character, is the only one that I feel got nerfed (understandable, since she was just way too kickass in the previous games), but she makes up for it with her final smash and her improved mobility once her suit is off. They also threw in the biggest W-T-F of a voice intro for one of the Metroid music tracks: "SAMUS IS UNDER FIRE, SHE HAS SENT AN EMERGENCY DIRECTIVE, JOIN THE FIGHT!." It then proceeds into a death metal remix of the Brinstar theme. It's so ludicrous we were laughing our heads off for nigh on five minutes. Makes me really glad they handed the franchise off to an American production company for the Prime games -_-

All in all, I look forward to giving the game a sound thrashing over the next few weeks to see if it really stands the test of time.

Community Residual Self-Image Zippy's Picture Thread Re:Zippy's Picture Thread (I can have one, too!...right?) Stack 0 03/08/2008 21:36
The trick to using the clone tool is to remember that it's not always quick and easy, and it doesn't even always work. For getting rid of that blurred text, for example, I had to reset the source location for each vertical line on the building at least once, if not twice. If what you're cloning is skewed by perspective, you're going to have to do it one line at a time. Center the source on an easy-to-find point like the corner of a window, then place the destination in the exact same point on the window above it. Then only do one side of the window, or even just that corner if the size doesn't match up.

It also helps to change the size of your brush if it's copying too much. Large brushes work for sky / clouds / carpet / etc., but you need to use smaller brush sizes for fine details like windows and such.

Another trick is to only do a little bit at a time, and if it doesn't look right, Ctrl-Z to undo and reset the source distance. If you keep holding it down and draw a lot, you run the risk of going to far and having to undo all the stuff that actually did work.

Not much else I can think of. Just always be aware of angles, perspective, how much things change size over distance, and be persistent enough to take time even if it doesn't seem to be working.

Hey Zippy, I took the liberty of removing that combat text you had on that one shot for you:

linky

It only took a minute or two using the clone tool. If you haven't learned how to use that yet, you should do that before learning anything else--it's one of the most useful tools in photo editing. It doesn't always work, and it's not perfect, but there's so much you can do with it and it's better than nothing at getting rid of stuff like that most of the time.

Yes, Audacity will work just fine for recompiling the .wav files, if you want to give it a try. Nothing else will really do it any better, since you're going to have to line the files up by hand anyway, and Audacity handles that just fine. You may want to use its Quick Mix feature to mix multiple tracks together as you work so that you don't build up a massive list of dozens of fragments--just get two or three files lined up perfectly, select all three at once, and mix them together, then just keep doing that as you work.
Community General Discussion MXO .wav files?? Re:MXO .wav files?? Stack 0 02/13/2008 02:06
The way it works in the game is that the .wav files are layered as they progress from one to the next (and yes, they do go in order). As the first file fades out, the second file starts in, and as that one fades out, the third, and so on. The reason they do this is so that when you transition from one track to another (exterior to interior, for example), the music from the previous location completes its notes without cutting out all of a sudden and fades out as the new music kicks in. When you're in one place and the music stays the same, though, you don't even notice because the .wav files transition seamlessly on top of each other.

If you want MP3s of the whole soundtrack, I have a full set hosted on The MxO Archive. I didn't compile all of them myself, but I had to fix a few that had some timing errors.

Construct, eh? Looking forward to it.

And for the last time, the Archives are archived constructs. Don't know why anyone thinks that they're mutually exclusive or that PvP applies only to one of them. And I've always thought of the org areas as secured outposts somewhere in the City that are only accessible through the industrial hallways, not external constructs.

Speaking of PvP, really... it's not like this place is gonna be a 24/7 warzone just because it's perma-flagged. Just look at the constructs--people are sometimes too busy looking for loot to even think about PvP. I was approached by a hostile player once who even wanted to trade loot. Give it a week to go through it's baby-Vector stage and before long, the constantly rude people should get bored of ganking and head back to Mara Central.

Sure, it'd be nice to lounge around a bit, but we have an entire city to do that. If you want to check out a new area and hang out and relax a bit, go downtown--I doubt anyone has really seen all of the views it has to offer. But we don't have any area where we can have free-for-all fights, and the Archives we have now are a joke as far as PvP is concerned.

If you're really worried about getting ganked, get a crowd together and zerg the place. Then you can enjoy a view you've earned.

You could also try Audacity, which is totally free. It may take some tinkering around to get it to record from your sound card, and to do it in stereo, since it's designed to also work with mic input. Even if it doesn't work, Audacity is still an awesome program that does just about all the basics of sound editing for free, so you should check it out anyway.

Aaand since I've been busy lately filling up my ability tree, I realized how darn useful it would be if somebody made a red frag map.

But now you may have to do it again with the new area SMILEY<img src=" />

Oh believe me, I'm quite looking forward to mapping out the new area, whether it's just a construct or a whole new district.

  Well now...

After putting this off for... like... a few years, I finally have gotten around to finishing the Downtown Access Node & Exile Map, complete with gang territories, bosses, Access Key drops, Access Nodes, Neighborhood Collectors, and Exile Dungeons. I had mostly been putting it off since I hadn't reached level 50 and couldn't easily get close enough to the bosses to place blip markers at their locations.

Anyway, it's finally done, and I also threw together a Downtown Club Map, which I somehow never got around to making either.

With that, the main parts of the MxO Archive map projects are complete. The only things I have left to do are whip together some maps for the Constructs, and maybe tweak the old maps a bit for accuracy / convenience. I might tinker around with transparency for labelling and such (I hadn't even learned how to use layers when I made these back in Beta), but for now, the bulk of the work is complete.

Is it just me, or does that building in the background look completely unfamiliar? O.O

This never ceases to impress.

Moriah East, you say? Man, that area is just trippy as all hell with the signal boosters--there's another invisible one at the entrance to The Sanguine Room, and it's been there for ages.
