If it's during the hours of 10 AM and 7 PM (Pacific time) on a work week (Monday through Friday, normally), then send me a Private Message letting me know your station name and the last 4 digits of the credit card (just so I can confirm ownership). I have a way to "unlock" the account. Alternatively, if you want to get nearly-immediate response to an unlock request, take the same information requested above and go to our live chat and ask for Chris L. or Mario N. They have the necessary access to the required unlock utilities.

It actually sounds like your video card is not being recognized by the motherboard properly. (Especially recognized by the "slow paint" you get when the desktop comes up) What do you have the AGP Aperture size set to in the BIOS? Have you updated your BIOS to the newest release from Dell?

Yep, the 7950 GX2 is a much better solution, but those cards are sort of rare and expensive. Getting two is awesome, though. With special drivers on Windows XP, one can set up two of those particular cards into a "quad SLI" mode that's better than an SLI set of 8800 GTX cards, for the most part.

Well, until we figure out what's causing problems with the GeForce 8x00 cards in The Matrix Online, I would recommend against getting one of those cards. So, if you choose to make a PC "on the cheap" (so to say) that is very powerful, then I recommend getting something such as these two suggestions: [Suggestion 1] CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 (~$190) Motherboard: DFI Infinity P965-S (~$130) - Supports Crossfire (and SLI... with proper BIOS configuration) Power Supply: Antec Neo HE 550 (~$110) Memory: 2 x Patriot PSD21G667KH (~$85 for both sets) - Each set comes with two 512 MB modules, two sets would total 2 GB of memory Video: 2 x Sapphire Radeon X1950 Pro (~$300 for both cards) Total without case and other required items (such as harddrive and OS): ~$815 [Suggestion 2] CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ (AM2) (~$100) Motherboard: Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe Wireless Edition (~$170) - Supports SLI Power Supply: Enermax EG851AX-VH(W) (~$130) - 660 Watt, SLI Certified Memory: 2 x Corsair XMS2 CM2X512A (~$140 for both sets) - Each set comes with two 512 MB modules, two sets would total 2 GB of memory Video: 2 x EVGA 256-P2-N636-AR GeForce 7950 GT (~$400 for both cards) Total without case and other required items (such as harddrive and OS): ~$940 Keep in mind that your mileage may vary with any of this hardware and that I'm not playing favorites with any of the makes/models listed. If you want to see what I personally use at home, then look at my profile for EverQuest II.

Just to let folks know, this issue is still being investigated and I don't have any other "tips" to try out yet Has anyone tried the latest NGO drivers from guru3d.com yet? I've heard a few good things from the Vanguard players about those particular drivers in comparisson to the official nVidia drivers.

This issue sounds exactly like what Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) does to a lot of MMO-style games and game consoles (Wii, Xbox, PS2/3, etc.) What make and model is your router? I can use that to determine if it supports SPI and if there's a way to disable that feature.

Your computer is exactly the same system that I have at work, down to the make, model number, and configuration. My suggestion would be to get a can of compressed air and blow out all the fans, heat sink fins, and whatnot. I don't know about you, but my system here at work gets amazingly dusty after about a year of operation. I've cleaned it out three times so far after realizing that it got so dusty. It could be that your video card is dying, but I doubt it.

Just like Jeffers suggested, there's a setting for this that you would need to do for ANY application that is primarily made for Windows XP, not just The Matrix Online. Here's a write-up on this type of issue: Description: The LaunchPad (or MXO Patcher) cannot connect to the update server or the game client fails to connect to the world/zone server(s). This problems is usually caused by a misbehaving or improperly-configured firewall or router. However, there are other causes for this to occur, such as having Internet Explorer set to "work offline". The final possibility is that if your computer has Windows Vista installed, it may not be configured to allow the game to download files successfully. Work-Around Steps: Please remove any firewall applications (not just deactivate them) and any routers, just to clear away possible causes in hopes to troubleshoot these issues. In many cases, firewall applications will detect minor changes in the game files and rule them as a possible threat to computer security (even though they are benign in nature). Alternatively, some routers employ a security system called Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI), which is incompatible with most MMO-style games and nearly all game consoles (Wii, Xbox, PS2, etc.) -- disabling that feature is highly suggested. If you have Windows Vista, then please follow these steps to ensure that the game is set to run with Administrator credentials: - Right click on the program launch icon
- Left click on "Properties".
- In the new window that pops up click on the "Compatibility" tab.
- In the "Compatibility Mode" area check the box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"
- In the drop down list make certain that "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" is selected.
- Under "Privilege Level" make certain that the box next to "Run this program as administrator" is checked.
- Click on "Apply" then click on "Ok".
- Double click on the program launch icon.
Development Status: Work-around steps provided, but the development and quality assurance teams are still investigating potential causes for some of these issues.

Thanks for the information, Beachhead. I will submit that to our compatibility lab. I still think that the issue may be rooted somewhere deep down into the LithTech engine, but I could be wrong. Out of pure curiosity: did you install the game from CD or use the game installer from our knowledge base? I wonder if the issue is caused by something from the CD installation.

f you would like to try downloading the entire game from the patch program, please follow these steps. - Download the Matrix_Install.zip file to your Desktop.
- Create a new folder for your Matrix Online game to be installed into:
- Double-click on My Computer
- Double-click on Local Disk (C) (You may need to click on "Show the contents of this disk")
- Double-click on Program Files (You may need to click on "Show the contents of this folder")
- Click on FILE-->New-->Folder (at the top of the window) and name the folder Matrix Online.
- Now double-click on the Matrix Install.exe file on your Desktop to open it.
- Click on the Edit menu at the top of the window, and choose Select All.
- Click the Edit menu again, and choose Copy.
- Now switch to the MXO directory you created, and choose Edit->Paste.
- Right-click on Launcher.exe and choose Send To->Desktop (Create Shortcut).
- Close all open windows, and then double click on the Shortcut to launcher.exe to start The Matrix Online.
Choose to do a Full System Check from both the End User License Agreement screen, and from the Username/Password screen. This will allow you to download the entire game from the patch servers. Disclaimer: These steps were originally written by Cory S... he had no concept of "simplicity", it seems, so they are sort of... long... instructions. They work, though, so I can't complain. -jc

Actually..... I just looked through the 158.22 driver release notes [Warning: PDF file] and saw something under the "Open Issues for the GeForce 8-series". There was a comment about F.E.A.R: Extraction Point experiencing "poor performance." That started the cogs clinking over in my head. Who developed F.E.A.R.? Monolith. Who originally developed The Matrix Online? Monolith. Do both games use the same game engine? Not exactly, but they are both "LithTech" engine derivatives. I would not be surprised if there's something in the LithTech engine that is not quite compatible with the GeForce 8x00 series cards... or vice versa.

Not yet... we're still testing on the new "official" 158.22 drivers from nVidia (which the ones I linked to are based on). If I hear anything from our Compatibility Lab, I'll report it... but it may take a while. A full regression test of all games when a new set of drivers comes out takes a while.

This might be due to use of the ForceWare 158.xx drivers. The "Coolbits" registry file should work fine on Windows XP with the older ForceWare drivers.

The game updates (from initial installation) may take some time to complete. This time is entirely dependent on the speed of your Internet connection. There are hundreds of different "levels" of DSL, ranging from nearly the same speed as dial-up modem to four times faster than the fastest cable modem. Usually, though, the most common are 384kbit, 512kbit, 768kbit, and 1.544Mbit. If you have the 384kbit (or slower), then you are in for a long download.

A thought occurred to me while I was troubleshooting a similar issue in another game forum. It isn't a particularly good idea, but it may work (let's hope): Go into the nVidia control panel and enter the "Additional Direct3D Settings" section (may be hard to find -- you might need to use CoolBits or NVTweak to get this to show up). There should be a setting called "Max frames to render ahead", which is probably set to "3" or something by default.... try setting it to "0" (or "1"). This may improve performance in a few games, but may reduce it drastically in others. Please let me know if this helps.

Jeffers is mostly correct in saying "different level of knowledge". Although, it has to do with privileges, too. Most chat techs are limited in their privileges, but Chris, Dan, Mario, Gareth, and myself (I sometimes fill in for chat when someone's out or sick) have access to the same procedure that the In-Game support (Brewko et al) use to "un-stick" accounts. GM Brewko was very nice and slipped a copy of the procedure for this under the rug to us in Tech support. However, it does require certain login privileges that prevent all chat and email techs from performing them. You can certainly ask for specific techs in chat, but I can't guarantee immediate action or availability. If all else fails, the escalation to In-Game support will get the job done anyhow.

Usually, when I take into consideration power supply... um... power(?)... I take the Wattage that the manufacturer lists and multiply it by 0.75. That will give a decent idea of what the supply actually provides under high stress situations. Your 600 Watt supply would give about 450 Watts under high stress, which may be what a single GeForce 8800 GTX asks for, but it may be just barely sufficient.

You're the second person I've seen who claims that the 8800 runs poorly in The Matrix Online while only indoors. Although two points of data doesn't substantiate a complete conclusion, I am inclined to say that it's likely there may be an incompatibility with something in the nVidia drivers and the game. Have you tried lowering all the quality settings in the nVidia control panel and/or the game? I know that's counter-intuitive for that particular video card, but I'm only trying to track down any possible causes.
