I'm just starting MxO and am very interested in roleplaying out my character that I will create. I already asked a few questions about roleplaying, like what servers and etc. What is different about roleplaying in the Matrix setting? I've roleplayed before, though mainly fantasy based stories. My first character will most definatly be simplistic to get a feel for the game, but what is unique about roleplaying in the Matrix setting? Is there a certain way I should name my character? Plotwise? Mannerisms? I suppose it'll be good that I'm a new player and my character is fresh out of the Matrix. ^^;

It is important your choice about who are you going to join.

If you want mankind freedom, join with Zion
If you agree with the Merovingian thoughts, work for him
If you think that the Machines have the control, become a Machine operative.

Now, I only play on Vector, so I don't know the details about the differences on servers, but Vector is hostile, so RP is, as I see it, a little apart.
Make sure you understand the whole Matrix situation, and have a little chat with everyone.

Read the players' responses to the Live Events threads -- they will give you a good idea of the philosophy (and people!) behind each org.

The don'ts of Matrix RP:
You are not Neo, you never will be, you never was, you never had anything to do with Neo, you don't know him, haven't spoken with him, haven't touched him. Nothing, nada, noppes.
You are not Morpheus, you don't speak like he does. You don't recruit bluepills by telling them they live in a prison designed for their minds. I'll tell you why in a second.
You are not the Architect or Smith. You may posess an exceptional vocabulary but the constant use of uncommon words is not what the Matrix is about.
You are not an exile or a program. You're a redpill. It's hard to pull it off good if you want to be a program, or an exile. It's possible, but oftenly people frown upon it.

This is mostly more of a joke, all I'm trying to say is: Be original. Even simple people can be original. And RP the way you find it fun. As long as you have fun it's all good. =)

Remember, there is only two things that are permanent about your character:  1) Your gender    2) Your name (Bluepill and Redpill handle).   So, pick a cool name...the rest is all changeable!  That way if you don't like the feel of your character, you get as many "Do-overs" as you like.

Also, I agree 100% with Illyria.  Keep up to date on the Live Events forums, and of course do your criticals.  Might want to brush up on the storyline thus far (Wikipedia's story summary is good).

Above all, have fun!

Your "Psych Trait" can't be changed, either.  It has bearing on the strengths and weaknesses of your character, and also can be part of your RP background or basis for a personality.  The descriptions in the character creator aren't up to date, so check the Guides and FAQs forum for more accurate game engine effects of the Traits.  Once you find some other RPers (Richland.Camon Heights (Central) is a good Hardline to look for them,) relax and immerse yourself in the milieu of the Matrix.  Learn about the city and the events since Neo and Smith canceled each other out by reading the Live Events forum, talking to the old timers, watching the cinematics and running the Archive Missions.  The Exile Contact Missions are good for filling in your knowledge of the Exile sub-culture and politics going on in the city and make you sound savvy when relevantly referenced.  There are also Story Summaries in the News section starting with chapter 6.3. and Sentinels (in-city newspaper) going back to beta.  All these combined will give you a lot of source material and subject matter to work with.  I'm tempted to provide links to all the resources I've mentioned but "hacking the Matrix" for the information you need can be a fun part of the game, too!

P.S. Your background details can tell others that you are interested in RP.  They can be edited at any time with the /setbackground command.  It's better to have a rich RP-style back-story or profile than to just say "RPer looking to RP" but you can change it any time you want a fresh "first impression."

Welcome and Happy Holidays!
