I might be getting a notebook of my own with Vista on it, so am interested in this thread!  9mmfu, are there any common threads to these posts?  Any possibility of a workaround in the near future?  Any insights at all emerging from all this?

After trying 7 Vista machines with different configurations, I found that the "Right" settings really come down to what video card you have. Some cards worked well with AA turned off and others displayed well with AA turned on. Digging deeper I found it also depends on your make. Self built seem to do well with high settings while the 3 dells I tried all worked well on medium/low settings. You just have to play around with all of the settings for now until there is a fix.

I hope that I can fix my in-game sound problem with vista. I can hear in-game music but no footsteps, combat sounds. :/   suggestions plz

I keep getting your video card has become unstable errors.

 

I know its not hardware related as it runs everything else beautifully, resolution doesnt seem to matter I run anywere from 2560*1600 to 1024*768 with the same issue.

 

Heres hoping something is available before the fanfaire in August.///

I've been struggling with Vista and MxO since Vista's release.  I have a powerful laptop running (factory-installed) Vista Ultimate x64 that seems to be going just fine.  I have a desktop that I built and did a straight install, but has given me nothing but fits.

This insistent journey has not been without its inroads, and I'd like to share some of what I've learned here.

1) My worst problem was the crash-to-desktop:  the game would just....stop.  No warning, no errors.

I finally caught an item in the Event Viewer (big image, you can open the link if you like):

Vista's Aero directly writes to main graphics memory, bypassing the CPU.  Older programs can disable the bottleneck Vista causes when it's directly accessing graphics memory to hand to its pretty Aero FX, but sometimes they get stopped by the OS, or crash right after managing it (which resets the Desktop Window Manager and you may never have seen it happen!).  If you right-click the launcher.exe file from Windows Explorer and go to the Compatibility tab, you can tell launcher to work around (instead of killing) the DWM.

This is where you change Compatibility settings:

I'm going to run the game like this for a while to confirm, but for now it seems to suppress the crash-to-desktop problem.

2) Despite having good, fast HDs, I was having terrible and choppy performance that behaved like a heavily fragmented volume, or one with little free space.  After playing with page files and micromanaging the whole thing, I've come to a couple of conclusions:

Superfetch can improve performance, but you have to do it the way Vista wants you to.  Sorry I can't find my links, but a Google for 'Superfetch has stopped responding' ought to get you there.  What I got from my reading (and experimentation) is this:  Vista uses the Prefetch folder just as XP did:  to store copies of files most often accessed by the OS in one convenient place so that they may be launched quickly.  Where Vista is perhaps different is that it keeps better tabs on how much junk gets dumped in the folder.  It also creates an index file in the folder that prioritizes the cached contents and provides a kind of "map" to find them as efficiently as possible.  I found one article that suggested that Superfetch may even work in tandem with the Disk Defragmenter to move common files closest to the center of your hard drive's platters in order to be able to access them even faster.

What this means in human-speak is this:  if you want Superfetch to cache properly, you have to run things for a while--say, a week or so--to get Vista to figure out what you're using most often.  Once it "learns" your patterns, your games run faster.  The downside is that as the Prefetch folder gets more stuff put in it, your machine will boot up slower.  So if your machine is booting up longer, and you're using Superfetch, deleting files in the Prefetch folder (as I'd often do in XP) will speed up your boot time...at the cost of your overall performance.  You'll also find a game you haven't played in a while will run sucky for a bit until you've run it enough times for Vista to give it carte-blanche access again.

Bottom line:  you can use Superfetch or disable it, but it has to be used on its own terms.

Okay, last thing about hard drives:  I found this little item in one place in Vista, and one place only: 

Device Manager-->right-click on Hard Drive and choose "Properties"-->Policies tab:

It's that second checkbox:  "Enable Advanced Performance"--if I get to the HD properties any other way I either see that checkbox grayed out, or just not there at all.  What I did was to check that box, reboot, and...my HD performance got better.  I've been running several hours across multiple games that were choppy like a bad HD would be, and I'm pleased to say the problem's stopped.

Sorry for the long post, but I hope this information is helpful to the rest of you.  Thoughts/experiences are certainly welcomed.
